Château d'Arsac - Margaux 2014

Built in the twelfth century, Arsac today embodies the harmony of the pleasure of living, perfect complicity between wine and contemporary art. For Philippe Raoux, a daring owner, merchant and art lover, it all started in 1986. From then on, it's been 25 years of hard work to restore the nobility of this 112-hectare vineyard, including 54 in the Margaux appellation. , legendary terroir, synonymous with finesse and racy classicism. The sculpture garden affirms the exceptional character of the place whose adventure begins in 1989.

The 2014 D'Arsac has a pleasant raspberry and briary-scented bouquet, nicely defined with fine mineralité. The palate is medium-bodied with soft tannin, a little oakier than I expected with a slightly savory, grippy finish that lingers in the mouth. Robust for a Margaux although it does possess good depth, I would keep this a year in bottle. Tasted September 2016.

The Château d’Arsac 2014 has a slight over-egged nose at first, but with aeration it gains a little more freshness and delineation with attractive gravelly scents. The palate is medium-bodied, a little austere, perhaps, but nicely balanced and elegant on the finish. Perhaps one could argue this is straitlaced, but it remains a satisfactory contribution to the vintage.

Dark, fairly evolved crimson. Sweet, light, a bit simple and green. This is the sort of casually made wine that gets classed growths a bad name – though of course it may not be a classed growth!? (It is.)

Well-composed, ripe, aromatic Margaux with a modest price tag. Lovely fruit in this vintage from violets to cassis and sweet spices. Drink fairly young.

89–91. Barrel Sample. Fresh black currant notes abound in this is attractively fruity wine that brings bright acidity and soft tannins.

Bright lilac and savory notes lead the way for slightly taut damson plum and bitter cherry fruit. A light chalky echo holds the finish. Elegant.
