Château d'Armailhac - Pauillac 2011

2011 was one of the hottest, sunniest and most importantly, one of the driest in four decades. From April and May, very hot, the vegetative cycle of the vine knew a great advance: the flowering was recorded as early as May 15, the earliest date of winegrower's memory. And the veraison began two and a half weeks earlier than normal. July and August, however, brought a significant change: less sunshine and much higher humidity. At the end of August, cumulative rainfall since 1 January was still only 326 mm against 519 mm on average. At the beginning of September, the good weather was again installed on the Médoc and it was under a clear sun that took place the two weeks of harvest which started on September 12th. These happy weather conditions have been extremely beneficial in allowing the grapes to reach full maturity. The harvest ended on September 28th. The low yields, particularly at Mouton, produced structured, deep and fresher wines. 2011 is therefore a classic vintage Bordeaux, to rank in the beautiful or very beautiful successes ....

Bright medium ruby.  Subtle, vinous aromas of blackcurrant, sour red cherry, violet and minerals.  Sweet and silky on entry, then tight in the middle, showing terrific purity and verve to the flavors of red fruits, sweet spices and flowers.  Finishes sappy and lightly saline, with fine tannins and outstanding length.  This terrific, perfumed wine is heavily marked by its cabernet franc presence.

This is fresh and clean with citrus and currant character. Medium body, fine tannins and a delicate finish. A little lean but I like it. Clarity of fruit here. Give it three or four years to soften. Try in 2017.

A textbook Pauillac, with a core of ripe cassis, cherry compote and blackberry fruit, spiked with iron, singed cedar and tobacco details that should emerge as this melds and softens. Best from 2015 through 2025.

O= 2018 G= 15 ans

(57% cabernet sauvignon, 28% merlot, 13% cabernet franc and 2% petit verdot): Bright ruby-red. Spicy red cherry, delicately herb, tobacco and graphite aromas on the expressive nose. Then fresh and juicy on the palate, with peppery red fruit and forest floor flavors nicely framed by herbal and quinine notes. The finish is long and a bit tart, but this is a very sexy Armailhac.

Lovely expression of spicy, slightly exotic black fruits, beautiful lift of freshness and briary charm - a lovely wine for the medium term. Drink 2015-2025. (17 points)

A strong effort from this property situated between Pontet-Canet and Mouton Rothschild, d’Armailhac’s blend of 57% Cabernet Sauvignon, 28% Merlot and the rest mostly Cabernet Franc and a touch of Petit Verdot was harvested between September 14-24. Its deep ruby color is accompanied by abundant aromas of black fruits, white chocolate, licorice and flowers. Medium-bodied, expressive, savory, pure and long with sweet tannins, it should drink well for 15+ years.

The 2011 Chateau d’Armailhac is a blend of 57% Cabernet Sauvignon, 28% Merlot, 13% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot. Tasted on three occasions, it is has fine purity with black cherries and raspberry leaf, a less flamboyant d’Armailhac that usual at this early juncture. The palate is medium-bodied with a sappy, succulent entry that has fine tension. I appreciate the balance and substance of this d’Armailhac that shows impressive cohesion and a fine, chalky tannic frame towards the finish. This should turn out to be a respectable 2011. Tasted April 2012

From a blend of 57% Cabernet Sauvignon, 28% Merlot, 13% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot, the wine opens with espresso and blackberry scents. Medium-bodied, fresh, charming and easy to like, the wine ends with fresh cassis. 89-91 Pts

This full bodied and generous d'Armailhac is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon 57%, Merlot 28%, Cabernet Franc 13% and 2% Petit Verdot. The tannins while being plentiful and firm are velvety and plush in texture. The palate shows off an array of savoury flavours and blackberry fruits that are layered and fairly long. A balanced wine with complex flavours and minerality.

Bright and racy, with pronounced acidity giving nice cut to the red currant, plum and cherry notes. A singed wood hint slides in on the finish, adding length and definition. Not massive, but pure and precise.—J.M.

Packed with dark tannins and spicy wood, the wine is rich, dark and very structured. It is powered as much by its tannins as its wood. —R.V
