Chasse Spleen - Moulis 2016

Chasse Spleen has been managed by women for the past thrity years: Jacques Merlaut's daughter, Bernadette Villars, starting in 1976, followed by her daughter Claire, beginning in 1992, and now her sister, Céline.

The vineyard is located in Moulis, the smallest appellation in the Médoc, just off the Route des Châteaux, halfway between Margaux and Saint-Julien. Its extraordinary varies terroir consists of complementary soil types going from pure Garonne and Pyrenean gravel to a mixture of clay and limestone.

With the purchase of Château Brillette, Chasse-Spleen has extended over the last remaining Moulis hilltop of the Graves.
Chasse-Spleen 2022 now boasts 125 ha of vines in the red, of which 80% of thick and fine Graves.

Classic Cabernet-based Médoc with dark fruit, blackcurrant and graphite. Juicy, fresh with tannic drive.

The 2016 Chasse-Spleen has a wonderful, detailed, mineral-driven bouquet that feels like a coiled spring at the moment. The harmonious palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, impressive depth and a pure but grippy, convincing finish. One of the best Chasse-Spleen in recent years. Bravo! This might represent one of the best quality-to-price ratios on the Left Bank.

The 2016 Chasse-Spleen is an earthy, powerful wine. There is good persistence, but the 2016 remains a bit rustic and hearty in style. Smoke, dried herbs, dried cherry and a whole range of savory Cabernet Sauvignon notes run through this expressive, hea Moulis en Médoc.

The 2016 Chasse-Spleen has a very elegant bouquet with neatly integrated oak, the terroir really showing through here, hints of cedar and smoke emerging with time. The palate is fresh as a button on the entry. It is cut through with a superb line of acidity that engenders superb tension, the tannins firm but fine with a subtle marine influence towards the persistent finish. This is a fabulous Chasse-Spleen, the best I have ever tasted from the estate. It could end up at the top of by banded score.

At its medium/full bodied core, you find, juicy, black and red fruits, tobacco, and cherries with a note of espresso bean. Give this a few more years to develop and it will be even better. This is probably the best wine here since 1989!

The 2016 Chasse-Spleen is dense, powerful and super-concentrated. There is not a whole lot of subtlety, that much is obvious. Even so, the 2016 is quite pleasing. Scents of graphite, smoke, crème de cassis, licorice and dark spice infuse the racy, potent finish. The 2016 is a big boy. This hearty, flavorful Moulis will drink well with minimal cellaring. Tasted two times.

(50 Cabernet Sauvignon, 42 Merlot, 6 Petit Verdot, 2 Cabernet Franc) | 33% new oak Rather powerful and hard but with a delicious, mouth-watering fruit quality, this is a structured Chasse-Spleen and it is full and imposing on the palate. What it lacks in grace it makes up for in effort. 17++

Dark crimson. Scented and rather voluptuous. Not forced. Medium weight. Very classic. Pimento and satin somehow! Bone dry. Tannins maybe just a tad too much? Just slightly sour on the rather sudden end.

Barrel Sample. This wine is soft and ripe, with finely integrated tannins. The acidity gives it a great lift, and is framed by those fine, dusty tannins.

A solid and linear young wine with blackcurrant and berry character, a medium to full body and a savory finish. Another excellent, young Chasse-Spleen.
