Chappellet, Cabernet Sauvignon Signature - Napa Valley 2019

The estate

In 1967, Donn Chappellet dreamed of making a wine to rival the great First Growths of Bordeaux. Pritchard Hill was the answer to that dream.

Considered a pioneer in the Napa Valley, Chappellet established the second new winery there after the repeal of Prohibition and became the 18th registered member of the Napa Valley Vintners. Family owned for over 50 years, Chappellet is recognized as one of the great Napa Valley wineries. Today, the second generation is committed to continuing the vision of their parents, Donn and Molly Chappellet.

The Signature Cabernet Sauvignon has been the flagship wine for more than three decades. It is a benchmark for the long-lived hillside wines of the Napa Valley; full of structure and aging potential, yet seductively forward in its concentrated varietal character. The dry, rocky soils of Pritchard Hill produce small, intensely flavorful grapes. Crop thinning allows for full, even ripening and elevates flavor complexity.

The 2019 vintage

Weather conditions

The 2019 growing season began with cool, rainy weather throughout winter and spring, which delayed budbreak slightly and resulted in a robust crop and vigorous canopies. The weather remained temperate throughout summer, followed by perfectly timed warm weather in October.

Tasting notes

Luxuriously dark and concentrated, this wine displays alluring aromas of cassis, dark cherry, spiced plum, chocolate, and sweet baking spices, with hints of toasted oak, cardamom, clove and vanilla from French oak aging. On the palate, this wine is voluptuously full bodied, with a lavish structure and supple tannins framing the ripe dark berry and black currant flavors. As it glides to a long resonant finish, sophisticated hints of espresso, cedar cigar box, anise and fresh herbs emerge, adding nuance and depth.

Plump and luxuriant, with damson, plum, red and black cherry fruit. Lithe and tense, quite floral and with a lovely wild herbal element too, a hint of bay leaf. On the palate this is gracious and nicely compact, with a well-defined central spine. This is sweet spiced with quite prominent oak influence. There’s incense, camphor and tar, but also a fresher green peppercorn note. Impressively pure, too, on the long and rolling intensely sapid tannins.

The 2019 Signature Cabernet Sauvignon is made from 77% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Petit Verdot, 8% Malbec, and 3% Merlot. Deep garnet-purple in color, it charges out with bold notions of warm cassis, blackberry preserves, and violets, followed by hints of cinnamon toast and dark chocolate. The full-bodied palate has a firm, grainy texture and plenty of freshness to support the muscular black fruits, finishing long and savory.

Heady and ripe, floral and open on the nose with aromas of cedar, sweet strawberries, spiced plum and herbal-edged raspberries. Crisp and juicy, tight and tense - the tannins have a firm aspect to them really giving this a coiled, concentrated, knitted texture and frame where the dark, ripe fruit drives through the centre but there's lots of liquorice, dark chocolate and clove spice giving the angles and nuance, almost overtaking the fruit. Still, it's well constructed, smooth and long with lovely integrity of juiciness. Lots of Petit Verdot character also gives the singularity and signature. A fine wine with lots to like. Stylish, sophisticated and suave. 3% Merlot completes the blend. Winemaker Phillip Corallo-Titus. 3.78pH.

Always a smoking value that readers shouldn't miss, the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Signature sports a dense purple color to go with beautiful cassis and blueberry-like fruits as well as bouquet garni, spice, and obvious, rocky mineral-like aromas and flavors. Rich and medium to full-bodied, with notable structure and good acidity, it's going to keep for two decades in cold cellars. It's a candidate for the best Napa Cabernet under $100. 18,000 cases.

It leaps with open-knit notes of warm cassis and plum preserves, plus hints of tobacco leaf, bouquet garni and cedar chest. The medium to full-bodied palate is firm and crunchy with bags of bright fruit and a grainy texture, finishing lifted.

This is very complex, with blackcurrants, tobacco and cedar. Some sandalwood and terra-cotta, too. Medium-to full-bodied with ultra-fine tannins that are creamy-textured and so long and pure. Attractive and complex.”
