Chapelle de la Mission - Pessac-Léognan 2022

Located in the heart of the Graves appellation, the Haut-Brion and La Mission Haut-Brion stand facing one another like twin sisters, extremely close yet so very different. Linked by their history since 1540, these properties share also an remarkable terroir. La Mission Haut-Brion stands opposite Château Haut-Brion and shares the same vast terrace of superb gravelly soils, ideal for cultivating vines, already referred to as “Haut-Brion” on ancient maps and deeds. Its vineyard covers a total area of 29 hectares (approximately 72 acres). Almost 25 hectares are planted with red grape varieties and just over 4 hectares are devoted to white grape varieties.

La Chapelle de la Mission Haut-Brion is the second wine of the estate. Produced in small quantities, this wine is a gateway to the world of Château La Mission Haut-Brion. Its name is a nod to the chapel of La Mission Haut-Brion, built by Lazarist priests in 1698.

The 2022 vintage

Couleur sombre, rouge, belle.

The mouthfeel is incredibly soft and velvety, akin to the rich and smooth sensation of a Da Bai Tu milk candy. The fruit aromas are full and ripe, and under the influence of high alcohol content, they radiate like sunlight, casting alluring fragrances of blueberries, mulberries, cloves, and vanilla wherever they touch. Though the tannins are abundant, they don’t carry any heaviness, showcasing the winemaker’s skillful extraction techniques. If the finish could be more delicate in terms of alcohol, it would undoubtedly paint an even more exquisite picture.

Rich and luscious bilberry and black cherry fruits on the nose, creamy, touch of liquorice and butterscotch, supple texture to the tannins even at this early stage, balance provided by a sprig of rosemary, burnt fennel, crayon. A highly seductive La Chapelle.

Evoking aromas of cassis, mulberries, coniferous forest and spices, it's medium to full-bodied, layered and round with a nicely balanced, fleshy core of fruit framed by velvety tannins and an energetic, ethereal finish. The pH is 3.9.

The 2022 La Chapelle De La Mission Haut-Brion is based on 56% Merlot, 36% Cabernet Sauvignon, and the rest Cabernet Franc. It's a gorgeous wine in its own right and has terrific cherry and darker, red currant-like fruit as well as a beautifully pure, medium to full-bodied, elegant style on the palate. There's plenty of classic Pessac smoky, gravelly, tobacco-like nuances, and it has soft tannins, beautiful overall balance, and outstanding length. This hit 14% alcohol with a pH of 3.88.

The 2022 La Chapelle de la Mission Haut-Brion has a fruit-driven bouquet with black cherry, blueberry and light pencil box scents. It shows a little more restraint compared to its showing from barrel. The palate is medium-bodied with very pliant tannins, good weight and still with that dab of dark chocolate toward the finish. Give this two or three years in bottle—it's a very giving La Chapelle.

Gorgeous sweet fruit of currants and berries with some graphite and dark mushrooms. Medium-bodied, this has firm and fine velvet tannins and a stone undertone with graphite. The second wine of La Mission. Give this three or four years to come around. Best after 2028.

The 2022 La Chapelle de La Mission Haut Brion is gorgeous. Silky, open-knit and inviting, it is an absolute delight. A wine of total refinement, La Chapelle is all class. Medium in body, with striking aromatics and a chiseled persistence, the 2022 is so expressive today. Dark fruit, leather, incense and licorice saturate the palate. What a great wine.

Super aromatic and fragrant, dark black berries and perfumed touches with minty freshness and chocolate. Supple and generous, really quite fruity and lively but also quite tannic. A nicely weighted palate with concentrated blackcurrant and strawberry fruits with freshly picked mint, liquorice spice and clove. You can feel the heat of the vintage in the depth and concentration of the fruit but there’s no overt heaviness and nothing harsh here. Tannins are nicely supportive and fleshy giving some bounce and fun to the palate. Juicy and bright, mouthwatering but cool and crunchy too. Really lovely texture and intensity. Maybe not so refined and delicate, but wow this gives a lot of flavour and punch while keeping the juiciness. 3.9pH.

The 2022 La Chapelle de la Mission Haut-Brion, aged in 40% new oak, has a fragrant bouquet with red cherries and crushed strawberry, well-defined and elegant. The palate is medium-bodied with tarry black fruit, slightly powdery in texture with a pert, saline finish. Very composed with a touch of dark chocolate on the aftertaste. It should give 12 to 15 years of drinking pleasure.

Medium deep. Graphite, black cherry, blackcurrant briary aromas. Very concentrated black cherry, blackcurrant fruits, dense grainy, al dente tannins, some moch chocolate notes and fine marked acidity. Still elemental but lovely fruit complexity and torque. (Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc. Roughly 30% new oak) 13.9%

The 2022 La Chapelle de la Mission Haut-Brion is composed of 55.9% Merlot, 35.4% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 8.7% Cabernet Franc aging in 19.8% new oak. Deep garnet-purple in color, it comes barreling out of the glass with bold notions of baked black plums, chocolate-covered cherries, and boysenberries, leading to wafts of menthol, Indian spices, and fragrant soil. The medium to full-bodied palate is packed with expressive black and blue fruits, supported by plush tannins and just enough freshness, finishing with a spicy lift.

The 2022 La Chapelle de La Mission Haut Brion is a powerful, dense wine, almost shockingly so. Gravel, spice, leather, menthol and dried flowers give the 2022 tons of aromatic presence to play off a core of dark, red-toned fruit. I don’t recall tasting a Chapelle with this much tannin in recent times, going back to the 2010. Readers will find a wine that delivers immense pleasure, though and tons of character. Loads of black, red, and deep fruits with tobacco leaves, herbs, and burning forest leaves open the wine. On the palate, the wine is even better with its smoked fruit palate, savory, spicy, sweet, dark cherries, and currants in the finish. There is a polish to the tannins, sweetness to the fruits, and smoky plushness in the finish. Enjoy it while waiting for the Grand Vin to develop. The wine blends 55.9% Merlot, 35.4% Cabernet Sauvignon and 8.4% Cabernet Franc, 13.9% ABV. 3.88 pH. Drink from 2025-2040.
