Ceretto - Barbaresco Bernadot - Barbaresco 2020

Ceretto , the iconic crus of Barolo and Barbaresco

Ceretto's story is that of a passion that began in 1937 with Riccardo Ceretto who started an activity that wrote a significant piece of history on the Langhe hills. In the 60s, his sons Bruno and Marcello joined the business with an innovative model for that time in the Piemonte: the importance of the soils. Inspired by the Burgundy, they thought that each vineyard has its own characteristics to reveal and must be considered as a "Cru" in its own right. Thus, they started mapping out the lands that produced the best wines and buying the vineyards. Today the lands have been handed down to their children but the philosophy remains: the land is the soul of Ceretto's wines.

Ceretto's family owns four wineries in the most suited areas of Langhe and Roero. The vineyards cover 160ha with 12ha in Barolo Appellation and 8ha in Barbaresco Appellation. Over the last two decades, aware of their responsibility to their precious lands, the family has embarked on a journey to adopt more environmentally sustainable farming methods and obtained the organic certification in 2015.

Bernadot, a hymn to the beauty of the Nebbiolo variety.

Bernadot is a Cru located in the upper part of Treiso, in the Barbaresco appellation. The Ceretto's family invested in this 4,80ha vineyard in the 90s. They took the risk to plant Nebbiolo varieties at an altitude of 400m. Time has proved they were right and from the very first years, this Barabaresco wine has shown all its enveloping softness.

The 2020 vintage

Bernadot is a Barbaresco that, while maintaining a deeply classic soul, satisfies thanks to the sweetness of its nose, to the succulence of its mouthfeel, and it does so without giving way to any redundancy. In the glass, it is an explosion of red berries, grenadine, and iris: the mouth is tempting, without exhibiting any excess of concentration.

The organic 2020 Barbaresco Bernadot offers a darker fruit performance with black cherry and blackcurrant. Like the other wines from this hot and sunny vintage, you taste the ripeness of the fruit and some background softness that comes with the territory (and the growing season). The Ceretto team delivers a deft hand, and you'll notice the etched sharpness and focus of the wine in terms of mouthfeel.

Very floral with orange blossom, iron, cedar, and dried spice. Medium body, firm and slightly lean in the middle palate. Firm and racy. Lightly chewy. Needs a couple of years to soften. Drink after 2025.

Beautiful florality and almost baked cherry sweets - cherry drops - on the nose, rose, Caramac bars, vanilla, white chocolate and lavender - an infusion of sweet, fruit and floral elements. Statuesque on the palate, ripe and massy, but so well textured - like crushed velvet with a powdery and also fleshy aspect to the tannins so they expand and fill the mouth and leave a lingering chalky, powdery salinity on the tongue and cheeks. Round, ample yet defined and detailed, so much going on but with no one element overpowering another building to a really impressive overall impression. Acidity is beautiful, and there are cola flecks that give the freshness and savoury touch. The power shines at the end where the tannins constrict and just grip the final flavour, so you know this is a big wine with long ageing potential. A deliciou addition to the Place de Bordeaux this year.

A delicious Barbaresco from Alessandro Ceretto, fully showcasing that unparalleled Italian ability to deliver a juicy wine that is both delicate and intense, and so food-friendly. Mandarin peel, raspberry, red cherry, fennel, fine and delicate tannins, welcoming and mouthwatering. First time on the Place for this 4.84ha vineyard in Treiso, and it's one to seek out.

The 2020 Barbaresco Bernardot is a super-classic Barbaresco from Treiso. Dried cherry, spice, tobacco, leather, incense and cedar all grace this understated, exquisite Barbaresco. Time in the glass brings out compelling inner sweetness and perfume. This is such a gorgeous wine.
