Castle of Yquem - Sauternes 2001

The year had started in line with the deluge of late 2000 and in April, the excess of winter water reached records (one year of rain in six months). Fortunately, from May onwards, nature became reasonable again, with almost normal precipitation until the end of August. During this same vegetative phase, the vineyard will benefit from temperature conditions too without excess except the somewhat high minima which will explain the rather early maturity of the 2001. In September, the first fortnight very dry, sunny but very cold, will allow a slow maturation of the grape, preserving the capital of acidity often undermined by the scorching summer end of the last decade. The precocity of the vintage and a few drops of rain at the beginning of September allow, on the 18th and 19th, a first pickup to very high degree on half of the domain. The 30 mm of rain falling then causes an explosive start of the Botrytis cinerea and, from 27-28, we can finish the first sort. On the 1st of October everything was dried and the real harvest began. After a last scare with 17 mm of water on October 3, an ideal weather settles for twelve days. Botrytis is perfect. A real "sprint" starts on October 10: for eight days, we start a race to cut, before the degree is too high, the terroirs in the order in which they present themselves.

This is so layered and intense on the palate with lemons and dried pineapple, mango and honey. Full body, very sweet, but it remains tangy and vibrant. Shows such amazing balance and intensity. Crazy finish. Hints of vanilla and apple purée. One of the greatest Yquems ever. All about purity here.

This is the greatest young Yquem I have ever tasted from bottle. Yellow color with a golden hue and an almost green tint. It shows intense aromas of botrytis with spices and blanched almonds that follow through to honey, maple syrup, dried apricots and pineapples. Full-bodied and very sweet, it is thick and powerful with layers of fruit and a bright finish. It coats your palate, yet remains lively and exciting. It is wonderfully balanced and refined, showing the class and pedigree that only this Sauternes estate can deliver. The winemakers at Yquem says it's their greatest modern wine ever. They have not exaggerated. This is best to drink after 2012.

The château produced about 10,000 cases in 2001, almost half the production of a normally outstanding year such as 1990 and 1989.

Besides the 2001 Yquem's fabulous richness and concentration, it shows a profound harmony due to its bright acidity and ultra-clean fruit. The wine is already wonderfully palatable. In fact, it's difficult not to drink it down when tasting it now. But it has the structure for long-term aging.

There are 10000 cases of this perfect sweet Bordeaux. The 2001 Yquem reveals a hint of green in its light gold color. While somewhat reticent aromatically, with airing, it offers up honeyed tropical fruit, orange marmelade, pineapple, sweet creme brulee, and buttered nutlike scents. In the mouth, it is full-bodied with gorgeously refreshing acidity as well as massive concentration and unctuosity. Everything is uplifted and given laser-like focus by refreshing acidity. This large-scaled, youthful Yquem appears set to take its place among the most legendary vintages of the past, and will age effortlessly for 75+ years. Anticipated maturity : 2010-2100+.

Extremely perfumed, with pineapple, lime and vanilla as well as hints of apricot and peach. Full-bodied and very sweet, with an explosion of fruit on the palate. Goes on and on and has an electrifying finish. All this richness but incredible balance and harmony. I love it. Could be the new benchmark for sweet wines.
