Castle of Armailhac - Pauillac 2010

2010 was a dry but relatively cool year, with no scorching temperatures during the summer. The winter, rather rigorous, gives way to a dry and fresh spring which ends with a few rains in mid-June. As of June 21, temperatures are rising and these summer conditions continue in July, which is particularly sunny. In fine weather of the last days of July succeeds a rather cloudy month of August, slightly cooler and of great drought. On August 21st, summer returns with strong heat (up to 38 ° C on the 25th and 26th) and cool nights, favorable to the good start of maturation. From 6 to 8 September, a rainy period is slow but the health status remains excellent. The fine weather reappears, always accompanied by cool nights, which promotes the quality and synthesis of anthocyanins and aromas until the harvest. After a low rainfall on September 26th, the grape harvest begins on the 28th in very good conditions and ends on October 13th. Naturally concentrated, the berries are small and their juice, rich and very colorful, is of good acidity. A dryness without dehydration, the exceptional insolation of the vine, cool nights and some rains arrived at the right time, give the year 2010 a remarkable identity. This vintage will thus find a place of choice in the long history of the Grands Crus de Bordeaux. A beautiful suite in 2009 ...

Good bright ruby-red.  Complex, perfumed aromas of blueberry, boysenberry, smoke, mocha, spices and cedar.  Sweet and plush in the mouth, with an enticing floral element and a whiff of orange peel lifting the blueberry, coffee, camphor and spice flavors.  Fine-grained, concentrated, minerally Pauillac with suave, fully buffered tannins and excellent length and lingering perfume.  And no shortage of acidity here.

Dense, juicy and inviting, with bouncy briar, blackberry, steeped black currant and melted black licorice notes framed by roasted apple wood and graphite notes. The finish courses along with good definition. Energetic and tempting, but the gripping, iron-laden finish will benefit from cellaring. Best from 2017 through 2030. –JM

Another sensational effort from Philippe Dhaluin, the administrator of Mouton Rothschild, this blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc and the rest Petit Verdot shows complex floral notes intermixed with forest floor, camphor, black currants and mulberries that all jump from the glass of this aromatic style of d’Armailhac. This wine possesses very good acidity, a surprisingly higher percentage of Merlot than usual, but the quality is impressive, and the good news is that there are 20,000 cases of this full-bodied beauty, which should age nicely for 15-20+ years.

Tasted at the UGC in London and at Chateau Mouton Rothschild. The d’Armailhac is more reticent on the nose with lifted dark cherry and blackberry fruit; some attractive sage and cedar wood scents emerging with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with a succulent entry. This has a fleshy, silky texture, the 30% new oak deftly integrated into the black fruit profile with a slight chewiness towards the finish. This is a very accomplished d’Armailhac, the 15% Cabernet Franc lending this Pauillac an attractive peppery note on the aftertaste. Tasted November 2012.

Polished and very fine with pretty fruit and berry structure. Full and silky with a delicious finish. It's so good now to drink but has depth and structure. Drink or hold

2010: A blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc and the rest Petit Verdot, the 2010 achieved in excess of 14% natural alcohol. It exhibits a dense ruby/purple color along with a pronounced nose of underbrush, cedarwood, licorice and black currants. This attractive, elegant, mid-weight Pauillac should be drinkable early in life and last for 15+ years. Drink 2011-2026

The deep purple 2010 d'Armailhac is a wine of great finesse, with an amazingly expressive bouquet of spices, cocoa, and roasted meat, all echoed in the layers of flavour that linger for a long time on the palate. According to the wine director of Mouton-Rothschild who guides the winemaking for this estate, this is the best d’Armailhac they have ever made. This is a very good value Bordeaux from 2010!

Beautifully concentrated black fruits, already has florality and spice, refreshingly elegant and classy, a wine with individuality, spice and (for Pauillac) charm. Drink 2017-28. (17.5 points)

Very strong and muscular d’Armailhac with mineral and currant character. Full, linear and toned. Very racy and long. Plenty of finesse too. It’s 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 29% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc, and 1% Petit Verdot.$

Généreux, onctueux, diversifié dans son fruit, un rien exotique, plus sensuel que racé, netteté de caractère irréprochable.

d’Armailhac 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot produced a wine that opens with cedar, 5 spice, gravel and cassis scents. Filled with chocolate covered blackberries and sweet cassis, this wine offers depth and purity of flavor. This is the second strong vintage in a row for this Pauillac. 92-94 Pts

Tasted 17 Feb: Very ripe and scented and strangely integrated! Sweet yet with real race and freshness. Tannins well covered. Tasted open 8 Apr: Healthy crimson. Sweet, creamy nose. Real lift and polish. Slightly green on the end. The tannins are almost entirely hidden! Mid weight. I hope to taste this blind later on today… (Score: 17 18-30) Tasted blind 8 Apr: Very dark purple. Not much nose. Very luscious start to the palate and some lovely structure. Really appetising and very dry on the end. Pauillac gravelly flavours. Long. Well balanced. No brute but no coquette either. Great vivaciousness and balance. (Score: 17 18-30) Drink 2020-2035

This has a nice briary core, showing dark fig and plum flavors, with a backdrop of roasted sage and tobacco. Offers good muscle and heft, but also the rounded feel of the house style. Tasted non-blind. —J.M.
