Castle Rauzan Ségla - Margaux 2008

Prolonged rainfall events in the spring, May / June showers and persistent humidity in August were not enough to fill the water deficit that has persisted for 7 years. Spring was relatively cool and resulted in a slow bursting. The flowering was disrupted by low temperatures and showers (a few parcels slightly affected by the hail storm at the end of May), which resulted in a little bit of dripping on some old Merlot plots. Veraison began very late with threats of mildew and cochylis (towards the cluster). It is obviously in these delicate conditions that the terroir and the vineyard work play an essential role. Patience and perseverance were rewarded by the arrival of the beautiful weather in mid-September. Only the hard work of our team, which takes care of each plot, has made it possible to obtain a quality harvest and a good concentration. Hand harvest in cagette, under a beautiful sun for 3 weeks. Since the 2004 vintage, the use of the new vintage reception system and the double tris tables make it possible to pay the utmost attention to the selection and handling of the grapes. This vintage has asked for patience and reactivity at the cellar. Vinification: Alcoholic fermentation; In thermoregulated stainless steel tanks for 8 days. Reassembly: 2 to 3 times a day, 2.5 times the volume of the tank. Temperature: 27 ° C. Malolactic fermentation in vats, and some batches in barrels. Aging: 60% new barrels.

Here is 2008 with a velvety texture yet the underlying bright acidity comes through at the same time. Medium to full body, firm and chewy tannins and a fresh finish. Very pretty and energetic. Just opening now.

The 2008 Rauzan-Segla (62% Cabernet Sauvignon and 38% Merlot) was made from 45% of the production. It is a beautiful wine in this vintage, not nearly as powerful and structured as the 2010, but it has complex notes of sweet red and black fruits, unsmoked cigar tobacco, spice box and a hint of very subtle wood. The complex perfume is followed by a dark ruby/plum-colored wine with beautifully sweet tannins, a silky, medium to full-bodied mouthfeel, and a long finish. This outstanding Margaux should drink nicely for 15-20 years. Drink 2011-2031. 90+ points

Floral and very fruity on the nose with plums and berries. Full bodied and very silky, with fine tannins. Chocolate flavors are balanced by a lovely citrus and berry fruit structure. A firm wine, needs another three to five years of age.

A touch soft, but persistent, with pretty floral, mulled plum and tobacco notes that glide over light, rounded tanins. The pure finish lets the fruit hand elegantly. Wins on balance rather than depth. Drink now through 2014.-J.M

Note de murier platane.

Dunkles Rubingranat, jugendlich Reflexe, zarter Wasserrand.

Full, deep ruby. Black fruits, licorice, leather and game on the nose, with a hint of green bell pepper in the background. Sweet, dense and nicely focused, showing a sappy quality to its blackcurrant, menthol and mineral flavors. Finishes broad and vibrant but with slightly dry tannins. This will no doubt require six or seven years of cellaring, and is built to age.

Mittleres Rubin, feiner Rand. 2017 – 2033

This outstanding effort is atypically forward, sexy, and opulent. Only 45% of the crop made it into this blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Petit Verdot. Yields were 47 hectoliters per hectare, which is slightly higher than some estates, but the harvest was very late, between October 2-21. Sweet cassis, black cherry, licorice, tobacco leaf, and spice box are all present in the complex aromatics. In the mouth, the wine offers generosity, roundness, sweetness, and velvety, ripe tannins. I was surprised by how forward, precocious, and delicious this wine has already become. It appears set for a relatively long life of 25+ years.

Lightly fragrant. Not especially intense but well balanced though pretty forward. Sudden finish. Easy wine for relatively early consumption. Neat, long finish. It’s all on the end with this wine. Great complex finish. Drink 2012-18

Compared to Rauzan-Gassies, the Rauzan Segla has more fruit concentration on the nose: blackberry, tar, a touch of pomegranate and spice. Good definition. The palate is medium-bodied, harmonious, just lacking the structure and length that I was expecting. Given time in the glass though it begins to unfold, revealing more depth than first supposed with a very elegant finish of blackberry, cedar and graphite. This should give much more after bottling. Tasted April 2009.

Purple-red, fragrance and complexity on the nose, less blackcurrants, more wild roses and violets, almost understated fruit on the palate, but florality continues and there is true precision, depth and length. Drink 2015-25.

Offers flowers, currant, berries and sandalwood on the nose. Full-bodied, with firm tannins and lots of fruit and freshness. Firm and racy. There's a little more Cabernet this year and no Petit Verdot.
