Castle Meyney - Saint-Estèphe 2014

After a manual grape harvest and a meticulous sorting in the vineyard, the grapes are sorted again in the cellar thanks to an optical sorting device of last generation. The grapes are vinified in vats of variable capacity, allowing a good parcellary approach. The alcoholic fermentations are carried out after a few days of cold pre-fermentation maceration, the total maceration time being around thirty days before run-off. A part of the wines realizes its malolactic fermentation in new barrels. The whole of the first wine is raised in French oak barrels, renewed to the level of 30% of new wood for this vintage.

This is one of the most immediately appealing 2014s from the appellation thanks to its very ripe black fruits, and there’s still a lot of structure behind it. Reminds me of some of Meyney’s top vintages of the 1960s. Drink or hold.

Shows good tension, featuring a singed iron note running from start to finish, wrapped in dark plum and red currant fruit, with savory and tobacco accents. Best from 2019 through 2028. 16,165 cases made.

Super-ripe dark cherry, plum, smoke, chocolate, licorice and tobacco are some of the signatures in the 2014 Meyney. This is one of the more overt, flamboyant 2014s readers will come across. Although certainly not a shy wine, it is loaded with personality. The late harvest and the generally intense style favored by consulting winemaker Hubert de Boüard are very much in evidence. Tasted two times.

Violette, cassis, bouche bien fruitée, du volume, large et long, finale accrocheuse, joli fruit pur.

A deep, powerful wine, the 2014 Meyney shows the more virile, imposing side of the vintage. Black cherries, plums, game, smoke, tobacco and menthol are all supported by a spine of firm tannin that gives the wine its imposing structure. This fruit did not come in until October 30, very late, even by the standards of the year. The style is decidedly virile, with more than enough pure depth and underlying structure to develop beautifully in bottle for many years. Consulting Winemaker Hubert de Boüard is doing terrific work at Meyney.

This is probably the best vintage of Meyney produced to date. It’s certainly the best wine I’ve tasted from the estate. (And I have tasted wines dating back to 1929!) Vibrant in color with strong aroma of blackberry, plum and spice, this wine is a liquid dream, concentrated and fleshy with length, purity and character. Much of the success is due to the estate’s recently adopted, spare-no-expense attitude and a man named Hubert de Bouard, new consultant to Meyney. This is a wine to watch, especially if it stays reasonably priced. 92–94 Pts

The Château Meyney 2014 is a little gem. The nose is classic Saint Estèphe with blackberry and raspberry fruit, fine delineation and poise, a sense of mineralité that will hopefully be manifested in bottle. The palate is fresh on the entry with slightly chalky tannin, decent weight in the mouth with a graphite finish that is as much Pauillac as Saint Estèphe. Excellent.

There is nothing wrong with this wine except that the texture and flavors are a bit soupy and broad. In 2014, there is good ripeness and lifted flavors with nice finish. Good, solid Saint-Estephe.

Massive depth: chunky as always when young, but will age well. Drink: 2019-2029 (87)

Full body, dense and silky with a beautiful dark currant and berry character. Long and silky. Very fine. Best Meyney in years!

Vin ample, dense, riche avec des superbes arômes de cassis et de fruits rouges. Long et souple.

18/20 2023 – 2048

Ripe and languid in feel, with flattering plum, blackberry and black currant fruit, layered with a toasty ganache edge. Need to tighten up a bit, as the fruit is a touch
gushy now despite the weight. Reveals some good acidity buried on the finish, however so worth the gamble.
