Castle Guiraud - Sauternes 2001

When the botrytis, the wind and the sun are at the rendezvous of Sémillons and Sauvignons, the vintage of SAUTERNES is great !! This is the reason for the overall success of the 2001 vintage. GUIRAUD 2001 is certainly the most precise wine of the vintage. The risk was to be caught by an extreme concentration which would have given very rich wines, but at the expense of finesse and elegance. GUIRAUD 2001 presents intense aromas of ripe grapes, hawthorn blossom, fresh fruit with a menthol tip that characterizes the vintage. The botrytis is terribly there with scents of fresh pepper, black tea and the wild and mysterious side that calls to keep it in bottles. The impression on the palate is superb, the touch is soft, sweet but vigorous. The tonic impression of botrytis is amplified by great freshness. The aromas of the mouth amplify the nose: the botrytis present them now confit, sapid and of a very great definition and purity. The return is long. Never the sugar power gives heaviness: it is the magic of the natural sugars sublimated by the botrytis. The liquor is fresh and aerial. Power, Finesse and Elegance are the magic triangle of a great wine.

Golden yellow. Butterscotch and vanilla, with hints of ripe apples. Full-bodied, with lots of sweetness and a spicy apricot and honey aftertaste. Excellent concentration and balance. Loads of botrytis character on the finish. Intense. Hard not to drink now because it's so luscious and rich. Best after 2008. 11,665 cases made. (JS)

Toasty oak nose with a dense, honeyed fruit ; concentrated with a fine flavour, a little dried by its oak at the moment, but the high proportion of Sauvignon blancs gives a particularly zesty, appetising quality.

A medium gold color is accompanied by notes of caramelized oranges, citrus, honeysuckle, creme brulee, and smoke. Full-bodied and opulent, with tremendous intensity, good acidity, and a persistent finish that lasts nearly a minute, this large-scaled, thick, heady Guiraud is one of the finest examples from this estate that I have ever tasted. Anticipated maturity: 2007-2025.

gorgeous example of Guiraud, the 2001 boasts complex aromas of honeysuckle, butterscotch, toasty new oak, tropical fruit, and sauteed butter. Powerful, dense, full-bodied, and beautifully delineated, with loads of botrytis, this is an impressive, backward, yet tremendously promising wine. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2025.

Elegantly aromatic. Rich, creamy and complex, with real weight and power. This wine promises a long evolution. Ready from 2009.

You can spread this on toast. Lots of lemon rind, pineapple and honey on the nose. Full-bodied, very oily and spicy, yet backward and not giving much now. Nonetheless, superb potential.
