Castle Coutet - Barsac 2012

Meteorology was particularly capricious at the beginning of 2012. A rainy spring, which saw alternating freshness and humidity until the beginning of July, followed the installation of a heat wave in August. The absence of precipitation until early September delayed the development of noble rot. The warm, dry weather of late summer at the same time allowed the grape to load up with sugar and develop its aromas. These conditions have resulted in a poor harvest, the quality of which, however, is indisputable. The harvests of the previous vintages had been particularly early. In 2012, Château Coutet is returning with a more seasonal harvest in the norm.

Dense for the vintage with phenolic, apple skin and honey character. Full body, light sweetness and an apple puree aftertaste. A little simple. Drink now.

Broad and honeyed, with lots of warm piecrust, orange zest, glazed apple, peach and almond cream notes. The finish lingers with orange and date accents, while a hint of citrus oil imparts good spine. Rather flattering today, but has the energy to develop with time. Best from 2017 through 2027. 2,500 cases made. –JM

Greenish gold. Very tense on the nose and then rather developed on the palate. Masses of pleasure but not that full. Definitely new wave with some green notes.

Clean, green, save the planet! Very racy. I could wallop this down already, although it’s still a bit chewy. Long.Drink 2016-2030

The 2012 has a lifted bouquet of quince, marmalade and yellow flowers that is precise and focused. The palate is viscous and convincing on the opening, offering good depth and cohesion with satisfactory botrytis, though it tails away ever so slightly on the finish. Still, this is a commendable effort and is another fine 2012 Barsac.

Mid gold. More delicate on the nose than many. Light notes of apricot and honey, even a touch floral. Quite savoury on the palate, perhaps from the oak. Sweet and fresh and a careful 'dryness' on the finish that adds finesse. It's obviously not dry but there's a textural dryness that works well with the sugar sweetness. Very moreish and long. (JH)

Rich, concentrated Barsac with a high level of residual sugar (145 gm/l) and honey, dried mango notes. Fairly dense, layered flavours with a full-bodied palate. Two samples tasted: one was fresh and lifted while the other was dull and heavy. 17/20pts ( 90/100pts)
