Castle Chauvin - Saint-Emilion Grand Cru 2014

September and October are very warm and dry, allowing to perfectly expect the perfect maturity of the grapes and the harvests in excellent conditions. The great maturity makes it possible to obtain wines with shades of vegetable types, with notes of fresh and ripe fruits. A part of the harvest is put in new barrels in November to carry out its molactic fermentation giving the wine suppleness and roundness. From the month of December, the breeding takes place on lees for about two months so as not to over-draw the wines and they retain all their fruit.

The 2014 Chauvin is nicely textured throughout. Tobacco, herbs, dark cherry and plum are pushed forward in a soft, inviting wine that will deliver considerable pleasure pretty much right out of the gate.

Sporting a new label, which history buffs may be interested to know is a redesign of their label from the 1920s, the medium-bodied, floral, red berry-dominated wine is on the fresh, smooth, easy drinking side. 86-88 Pts

Now owned by the family of Sylvie Cazes, the Château Chauvin 2014 has quite a plush bouquet with soft blueberry and juniper scents that are nicely defined. The palate is quite tensile on the entry. It feels a little tart at the moment, though there is a good line of acidity with good structure on the slightly clipped finish. Hopefully that will fill out by the time of bottling. A second example seemed a little dry. Expect this to improve under Sylvie.

Ripe plum and cherry dominate this charming wine that is easy to enjoy young. Balanced and lifted with juicy fruit, this is a successful first wine by Sylvie Cazes who purchased this property last year. The wine is made by Michel Rolland.

First vintage for new owner Sylvie Cazes. Still has the attractive fruit of previous years but tannins finer and less austere. Mid-palate round and supple. Finishes with a fresh, saline note. Drink: 2019-2026 (87)

Full body with intense concentration and fruit character. Mineral, spice and fruity intensity. Well done.

17/20 2020 – 2034

Friendly plum and cherry notes lead the way, backed by light savory and vanilla hints. A little shy midpalate, but has some charm.
