Castellare di Castellina - I Sodi di San Niccolo - Toscana IGT 2022

Castellare di Castellina I Sodi S. Niccolò, a historic Supertuscan

The Domini Castellare di Castellina group was created at the end of the 70s by Paolo Panerai and includes today four prestigious wineries such as the historic Castellare di Castellina in Chianti and Rocca di Frassinello, a joint-venture with Château Lafite Rothschild. All the wineries are supervised by Alessandro Cellai who was mentored by Giacomo Tachis, the famous Italian winemaker.

Castellare di Castellina's vineyard spreads over 33 hectares on the hillsides of a natural southeast-facing amphitheater, at an average height of 370 meters above sea level. Here, the production philosophy is based on tradition, innovation and respect for the environment. Castellare di Castellina I Sodi di S. Niccolò, is one of the few Italian Supertuscans made exclusively with native vines: 85% Sangioveto and 15% Malvasia Nera. On the label, the iconic bird, always present on the red wines of Castellare, symbol of the daily commitment to sustainable viticulture that the winery has been carrying out for over 40 years.

The 2022 vintage

The 2022 vintage was characterized by a warm and dry climate, with good spring water reserves followed by a dry summer and high temperatures. The rains at the end of August favoured the ripening, allowing for an early but regular harvest, with healthy and well-concentrated grapes. The wines are intense in colour, with mature and fine aromatic profiles, centred on red fruit and floral notes, accompanied by light spicy nuances. On the palate they express good structure, mature and integrated tannins supported by a freshness sufficient to guarantee balance and a good prospect of refinement.

Special black label for the 45th vintage.

Tasting notes:

“I Sodi di S. Niccolò 2022 is characterized by a great olfactory intensity and a dense and elegant texture of sweet and silky tannins. The acidity of Sangioveto gives to the wine great freshness and makes the sip particularly pleasant and crunchy, with a long and highly persistent finish. Ready immediately and, at the same time, suitable for a very long aging."

(IGT Toscana; 85% Sangioveto – a special clone of Sangiovese with thinner skins; 15% Malvasia Nera – which softens the big tannins of the Sangiovese; aged in oak, 50% new, 50% first and second use for 24-30 months; 14% alcohol; the bird adorning this year’s label is a stonechat – it changes each year and like the wine is sourced from the vineyard itself). Another brilliant I Sodi di San Niccolo following on from the sublime 2021 despite the rather more challenging vintage conditions (essentially, extremely hot and extremely dry). This is solar and sunny in temperament but with a lovely natural freshness to the fruit that holds everything in balance. Bracken, forest floor, rosemary and a hint of lavender accompany the copious, predominantly red, berry fruits – with a little tomato stalk and leaf too. This is dense, compact and quite intense in the mouth, with an intriguing blend of oak smoke and curry spices beautifully intermingling with the rich, bright red berry fruits. The tannins are very refined and their gentle grip and engagement, particularly, on the finish, serves to keep this fresh all the way to a distant horizon. The balance is very impressive.

The 2022 evokes the wild woodlands of the Chianti hills as well the hard, stony soils that give I Sodi its name – all in one sophisticated package. Top-notes of leather and mocha meld with orange zest and Mediterranean forest flora. Cherry compote and fresh blackberry emerge as it sits in the glass. This is impeccably coiffed but still almost painfully young. The black brambly currant, candied violet and crushed stone core is tightly wrapped in endless layers of fine, grainy tannins. That firm grasp eventually cedes, allowing a succulent undertow to kickstart the saliva glands. Luscious acidity buoys the whole, and incense wafts headily throughout.
