Carmes Haut Brion - Pessac-Léognan 2021
Carmes Haut-Brion, a unique signatureIn 1584, Jean de Pontac, the lord of Haut-Brion, donated several acres of meadows and vines to the Carmelite Order. They cared for the land for nearly two centuries with an unwavering devotion. After being confiscated during the French Revolution, the estate was purchased by the Léon Colin family in 1840. Their descendants put years of work into enhancing the property, adding a chateau and landscaped grounds, before selling it to Patrice Pichet in 2010.
Carmes Haut-Brion is first and foremost a unique situation, that of a closed vineyard in the city of Bordeaux. This singular configuration creates a unique microclimate characterized by an early maturity. Its 7 hectares of vines, surrounded by the city, are dominated by Cabernet Franc and cohabit with a magnificent park. In the middle of this one, the now famous Philippe Starck-designed winery seems to be rising from the waters. Both a feat of technical minimalism and a fitting memorial, this building is a metal-clad showcase at the vineyard's service.
Since his arrival in 2012, Guillaume Pouthier has been constantly searching for bright fruit, lively energy and seductive salinity.
Each year, formulas are reinvented so that, in detail, the definition of wines becomes clearer. Thus, the essence of the fruit is slowly extracted by gentle and subtle infusions. Or, thanks to their early maturity, part of the grapes are entirely immersed in the vats. This assumed quest for accuracy and brilliance leads to decipher and reveal the essentials of Carmes. Here, the wine has the taste of the place.
2021, a year of incredible intensityLive this vintage through a sound creation:
2021 vintage by Château les Carmes Haut-BrionA year requiring the skills of a tightrope walker, when nature played games with the winegrowers. Solid in their vision of the place, present at all times, without respite, they played, shivered, imagined and ensured a commitment to the vine at all times. Passionate. Certain that this enthusiasm and these choices would be felt in the wines!
The harvest began and the grapes showed all the richness of successful ripening, achieved slowly in cold conditions. The Cabernets excelled in performing their major role; character, juice, slender tannins.
Here, the enclosed vineyard of Carmes and its micro-climate were an opportunity to be seized. An unprecedented harvest with successive sorting in the vineyard, then in the cellar, both negative and positive. The Cabernet Franc provides the blend with an introduction and a broad aromatic palette, which then takes the form of a wave, a juicy, breaking mass. Already, at this stage of ageing: smoked paprika, incense, violet, pine forest... And, a slightly more unusual note at Les Carmes, fresh blackberry.
Carmes Haut-Brion 2021 is one of Antonio Galloni's favorite wines in this vintage, "the 2021 is a magical wine"
