Carlmagnus - Fronsac 2022

Arnaud Roux-Oulié, the artist winemaker behind Carlmagnus

Arnaud Roux-Oulié is the third generation of a family of winegrowers and was trained by his grandfather from his youth. When he took over the reins of the estate at the age of 20, he decided to buy 2 hectares in the Fronsac appellation. As a tribute to the glorious past of the appellation, and its close links with Charlemagne, he decided to call his new estate Carlmagnus.

Artist and winemaker, Arnaud Roux-Oulié likes to mix his two passions. His unlimited creativity is revealed each year in his wines...and on his labels! Each vintage is a source of inspiration that will give birth to a new illustration on the label.

Château Carlmagnus has expanded while remaining faithful to a single credo: to produce great wines, while honoring and preserving this exceptional territory that is Fronsac. The privileged vineyard covers now 20 hectares and is composed of clay-limestone soils and naturally drained limestone plateaus. In order to develop the identity of the vineyard, Arnaud Roux-Oulié has converted a part of it to Organic Farming, thus allowing to find the originality of the terroir back. A meticulous work in harmony with the rhythms of nature for a respect of the environment and the men.

Château Carlmagnus 2022 can be described in one word: refreshing. Its bright acidity is the wine’s crowning glory, serving as a beacon in the darkness that draws all the elements of the wine towards it. As the numbing flavors of hawthorn, red dates, and Sichuan pepper gradually fade away, delicately crafted tannins emerge with a soft pink hue. This is truly a textbook Fronsac wine that one simply must taste in order to appreciate fully.

Brambled berry fruit on the nose, good depth through the palate, this has chalky tannins and plenty of limestone grip coupled with fleshy blackberry and raspberry fruits, good quality and one to look out for. License to taste James Bond label if that's your thing... Stephane Derenoncourt and Hannah Fiegenschuh consultants, 15ha estate owned by Arnaud Roux-Oullié, 40% new oak.

A blend of 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc, the 2022 Carlmagnus evokes a ripe, spicy bouquet of plum, baked dark berries and cassis mingled with floral notes with time in the glass. Medium-bodied, dense and concentrated, it's framed by structured tannins with a long, chalky finish.

The 2022 Carlmagnus has a very perfumed and floral bouquet that slightly obscures the fruit profile. The palate is a bit chewy on the entry, with grainy tannins and blackcurrant fruit tones, though the finish feels short compared to its peers.

The 2022 Carlmagnus opens with promising aromatics redolent of crushed flowers and small red berry fruit. Searing contours are penalizing on the mid-palate and finish. I wish this had more mid-palate pliancy and overall finesse.

Herbal, open and expressive on the nose, not so ripely fruited as some but all the other nuances - liquorice, dried herbs, rosemary, toasted spice - are present. Sleek and focussed, a sweet attack of ripe fruit with high acidity that then focusses and narrows into quite a salty, saline finish. Great juiciness combined with muscles and concentrated. Feels quite heavy with lots of toasted spice on the finish. Tasted twice. Harvest 12 - 23 September. Ageing 18 months; 30-40% new barrels. Derenoncourt consultants.

Oak dominant, blackberry and damson jam, with smoked sandalwood, incense and crushed rocks. Intense, heading towards overblown, but stops before it reaches the edge, and is good quality. 40% new oak.

The 2022 Carlmagnus, 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc, is deep garnet-purple in color. It offers up an explosive notes of preserved plums, baked blackberries, and Christmas pudding, leading to hints of sauteed herbs, smoked meats, and tobacco. The full-bodied palate has a tart backbone and chewy tannins supporting the voluptuous fruit, finishing a tad firm.

A ripe, textured, straight-up sexy Fronsac with tons to love, the 2022 Château Carlmagnus (90/10 Merlot and Cabernet Franc) has lots of both red and black fruits as well as notes of melted chocolate, baking spices, and hints of tobacco. It's forward, velvety textured, has ripe tannins, and a great finish. My money is on it being outstanding.

The 2022 Carlmagnus wants to be sexy and opulent, but it is penalized by vegetal notes and hardness in the tannins that are overpowering. Tasted two times. Drinking window : 2025-2026

The 2022 Carlmagnus, a blend of 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc, derives from a 20-hectare vineyard on clay-limestone soils. Exhibiting aromas of violet, lilac, smoke and dark berries, it’s medium to full-bodied, supple and enveloping, with a flinty, slightly reduced finish. 88 - 89+

Firm and structured with medium body. Notes of bay leaf, nut shell and chalk. The tannins are tight and lightly chewy.
