There is a huge step up in quality from No3 to Carillon. We suddenly find a much more composed and even style of wine with more subtle tones and perfectly integrated oak. While the oak is certainly firm and expressive, and the slightly sappy tannins augment a dry finish, the fruit is long and plummy. A liberal dusting of spice and grip here adds to the limestone tang, lending it an unmistakable air of superiority. I like this style of Carillon more than the slightly riper, ‘wider’ vintages because it has tension, explosive perfume (Cabernet Franc is doing a superb job here with moments of florality and chypre) and flair. 17.5+

Lavender, orange peel and redcurrants with some flowers. Medium body. Fine tannins and a tangy finish. Citrusy at the end. One that will be nice to drink young.

The second wine of this incredible estate, the 2021 Carillon D'Angélus is based on 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc that was raised in 60% new French oak. It's another gorgeous wine with a rare sense of class and elegance as well as density, offering notes of cassis, violets, spicy wood, and spring flowers. Medium to full-bodied on the palate, it has silky tannins, just about perfect balance, and a great finish.

Medium-deep colour. Lovely pure elderberry, hint star anise, raspberry pastille aromas with a touch of dark chocolate. Well concentrated chalky-textured palate with blackberry raspberry pastille fruits and very good silky textures. Impressive elegant crunchy fruits at the finish – a very refined style. 80% merlot, 20% cabernet franc. 16 months in new (60%) and seasoned (40% – second fill) oak.

Red pit fruits, espresso, earth, black raspberries and flowers are what you notice at first. On the palate, the wine is soft, fresh, sweet, fruity and pure, with a lean to the raspberry and red plum side of the style range that you will be able to enjoy on release. The wine blends 80% Merlot with 20% Cabernet Franc. Drink from 2022-2033. 90-92

The 2021 Le Carillon d'Angélus offers a mixture of red and black fruit on the nose, hints of cedar and clove, and even a touch of pain d'épices. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins, a fine bead of acidity, good weight and freshness and a suave and very harmonious finish. I have remarked on the melioration of Carillon in the last two years, and this continues that trend.

The 2021 Le Carillon 'Angélus opens with a burst of red/purplish fruit, spice, rose petal, lavender, mocha and new oak. Palpable energy drives the balance. The aromatics are broad and quite expressive, but on the palate, the 2021 remains strict, as the oak needs time to fully integrate. Let's see how this turns out.

Belle bouteille.

Now benefiting from its own dedicated winery, the 2021 Le Carillon d'Angélus is no longer a "second wine" per se, but rather draws on some 25 hectares of dedicated vineyards, emphasizing Merlot from the cool terroirs of Saint-Christophe-des-Bardes, complemented by holdings in the gravelly Figeac sector and on clay soils near Angélus itself—with anything that doesn't make the cut relegated to the No. 3 d'Angélus. Exhibiting aromas of raspberries, plums, warm spices and nicely integrated new oak, it's medium to full-bodied, supple and polished, with lively acids, refined tannins and a long, penetrating finish.
