Le Carillon d'Angélus - Château Angélus - Saint-Emilion Grand Cru 2017 b5952cb1c3ab96cb3c8c63cfb3dccaca

After a start under the best auspices with a very early bud burst, the vintage was slowed down at the end of April by the frost which hit the Bordeaux vineyards hard. b5952cb1c3ab96cb3c8c63cfb3dccaca Fortunately in Angélus, privileged by nature, we were not very affected by this dark episode and we carried out a very important selection work on the small area affected. b5952cb1c3ab96cb3c8c63cfb3dccaca The result went wonderfully well with excellent flowering, then a very hot month of June which gave the vine the energy and strength necessary for the development of beautiful grapes. b5952cb1c3ab96cb3c8c63cfb3dccaca The fairly cool but dry summer allowed slow and regular ripening, favoring the respect and brightness of the fruit. b5952cb1c3ab96cb3c8c63cfb3dccaca The end of the summer was a little wet, however, the maturity being there, we decided to start the harvest on September 13th! b5952cb1c3ab96cb3c8c63cfb3dccaca

The second wine of the estate is the 2017 Angélus Le Carillon d'Angélus, which is 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc in 2017. This surprisingly deep, medium to full-bodied, rich second wine has rocking notes of blue fruits, violets, spring flowers and a hint of minerality. It’s a seriously good second wine in a vintage that was hard on second wines.

Nez riche et baroque, rehaussé d’un élevage spectaculaire tirant sur l’eucalyptus et le pin, qui précède une bouche assez puissante pour un second vin, truffée, épicée, pleine et nerveuse, bien construite. Il y en aura peu !

The 2017 Le Carillon d'Angélus is pretty, succulent and forward, all qualities that are easy to appreciate today. In the 2017, the Carillon is 90% Merlot, which is one of the consequences of the April frost that wiped out 50% of the production across the three sets of vineyards that inform this wine. I would prefer to drink the 2017 sooner rather than later, while the fruit is bold and luscious.

One of the top second wines, here you find, sweet, juicy, plums, smoke, licorice, floral scents and a touch of minerality. The silky tannins and freshness come though in the finish. The wine was made from 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc.

The 2017 Le Carillon d’Angelus offers pretty blackberry and blueberry scents, well defined with just a light touch of violet petals. The palate is medium-bodied with edgy tannin on the entry, quite fresh with a crisp line of acidity. Nicely structured for a deuxième vin, it just misses the length of a more benevolent growing season. I can certainly see this being approachable after a couple of years.

Composed of 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc, the 2017 Le Carillon d'Angélus is very deep purple-black in color and features a lovely core of crushed black cherries, blackberries and blueberries with touches of violets and cedar chest plus a waft of cinnamon stick. The palate is medium-bodied, elegant and fresh with soft tannins and plenty of juicy fruit, finishing on a peppery note.

Frost at Angelus affected around 10% of blocks for the grand vin, but Carillon (which has been from a different vineyard since 1996, together with a few young vines of Angélus blocks) was more affected and so needed a lot of selection. No second generation fruit was used, meaning they will only produce 25,000 bottles of the 2017, compared to the usual 50,000 bottles. Picking began on 13 September, followed by low temperature vinification, keeping about one-third in tanks and two-thirds in barrels (approximately 50% new oak). This has a clear, fruit-driven feel, with juicy, well-balanced blackberry and blackcurrants, and it's enjoyably frank in style for the vintage.

This wine has great fruit and spice as well as intense acidity. It is soft, ripe and juicy on the palate, with lively acidity and a touch of tannins at the end, yielding a crunchy, fresh and fruity finish. It will certainly age well, but will also be hard to resist in its youth.

Fascinating that this second wine of L’Angelus is 90% merlot and is so tight and structured. Full-bodied, tight and layered with linear tannins and freshness. Focused and serious.
