Cap de Faugères - Castillon-Côtes de Bordeaux 2022

Silvio Denz Vineyards

The estate of Vignobles Silvio Denz in Saint-Emilion and in Sauternes share the passion that drives their owner. A love for wine and the prestige of great terroirs inspired the businessman to invest in the Bordeaux region. Having led Lalique Group to success, he channelled his enthusiasm and his taste for excellence into the acquisition and development of vineyard estates.

Château Cap de Faugères

Planted on a limestone-clay hillside adjoining the Saint-Émilion hillsides and the Faugères and Péby Faugères vineyards, Château Cap de Faugères’s land is rubbing shoulders with the greats. The vines are in the village of Sainte-Colombe and fall under the Castillon-Côtes de Bordeaux appellation. Like the other two vineyards, Cap de Faugères wines are made using sustainable viticulture with attentive maturation. The wine is made by the same team and to the same standards in a winery designed by the architects Jean de Gastines and Patrick Dillon.

The 2022 vintage

With a relatively dry and hot viticultural campaign, the harvest started earlier than expected under a radiant sun and high temperatures for the season. The heat concentrated the juice of the berries and quickly raised the potential alcohol level, which the team was able to control despite exceptional conditions. Their virtuous viticultural practices stimulated the natural resistance of our vines from the beginning of summer.

A 2022 vintage which promises to be exceptional thanks to a beautiful weather and which has allowed the teams to wait for each plot to reach its optimum maturity

Spiced berry fruit on the nose, well handled, well textured tannins, a little rustic but fully ripe, unfussy, approachable, with mandarin and orange zest giving a juicy lift on the finish. On border of Castillon and St Emilion, ageing in stainless steel, 37hl/h yield, harvest September 6 to 28.

The 2022 Château Cap De Faugères is charming, forward, and delicious, offering red and black fruits, spice, and a touch of graphite. Medium-bodied, it has obvious minerality and a beautifully balanced, approachable style. I like it today yet this outstanding Castillon will keep for 10-12 years with ease.

The 2022 Cap de Faugères has a sprightly, quite opulent bouquet with black cherries, blueberry and violet scents, cohering nicely in the glass with its well-integrated oak. The palate is medium-bodied and lightly spiced with sapid black fruit, fine delineation and a lovely saline finish. This is recommended.

Bright and vivid fruit with red berries, flowers and crushed stone. Medium body, fine tannins and a juicy finish. Salty at the end. Crunchy. 85% merlot, 10% cabernet franc and 5% cabernet sauvignon. So drinkable now, but will age nicely.

The 2022 Cap de Faugères is bold, punchy and super-expressive. Inky red/purplish fruit, lavender, orange peel and mint build effortlessly in the glass. This is an especially deep and rich vintage for Cap de Faugères.

Nicely aromatic on the nose, soft floral touches and dark fruits. Quite tannic and extracted on the palate, feels intensely concentrated and compact right now with all the tannins are the fore, massy, ripe and slightly toasted. There is a juiciness underneath the tannins, with mouthwatering acidity but it's overshadowed right now with crushed stones, clove, tobacco and liquorice. Doesn't quite have the easy enjoyment but this is well worked with tannins that are full but not harsh, textured but not too dry. Will be good to retaste in bottle. Harvest 6-28 September. Yield of 37hl/ha. Ageing for 12 months in stainless steel.

The 2022 Cap de Faugères has a sweet, quite candied bouquet with dark cherries and violet scents, perhaps just missing a degree of delineation. It does improve in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly coarse tannins. Tea leaves infuse the black fruit with an off-dry, more classically-styled finish. Appreciating the freshness here.

Plenty of estate signature, high tannins met equally by high freshness, this has enjoyable balance, muscular with plenty of damson and plum puree, has impact but carries it off.

The 2022 Cap de Faugeres, 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc, is deep garnet-purple in color. It comes bounding out with bold notes of juicy blueberries, black cherries, and dark chocolate leading to touches of garrigue, Chinese five spice, and black pepper. The medium to full-bodied palate has a sturdy structure of firm, grainy tannins with a lively backbone and great length.

A consistently outstanding wine, as well as a wine that usually represents a great value, the 2022 Château Cap De Faugères reveals a deep ruby/purple hue as well as a great nose of red and blue fruits, smoked tobacco, graphite, and some underbrush/leafy herb nuances. It's medium-bodied, nicely concentrated, and balanced, with a good sense of elegance.

The 2022 Cap de Faugeres is a very pleasant Cotes de Castillon. Succulent red/purplish fruit, lavender, menthol, rose petal and sweet spice are pushed forward in this attractive, mid-weight offering from Silvio Denz. Pretty floral top notes lift the finish. Drinking window : 2025-2032

Rich, deep, dark and fruity, from start to finish you find layers of chocolate-coated, black fruits, licorice, black cherries, and espresso. The wine is plush, round, polished and forward, with a touch of salt and more dark, plummy fruits on the backend. The wine was blended with 85% Merlot, and15% Cabernet Franc. Drink from 2025-2034.
