Cantenac Brown - Margaux 2023

Cantenac Brown, a new era for the most Scottish estate in Margaux

Witness of the Scottish origins of its founder John-Lewis Brown, the emblem of Cantenac Brown is its remarkable Tudor style chateau. The 60 hectares of vines are surrounding the estate and spread over Margaux and Cantenac.

José Sanfins has been managing the estate 15 years and has played a key role in the modern history of this 3rd Classified Growth. Since 2019, he and Tristan Le Lous, the new owner and an agronomist with a passion for oenology,  are very involved in managing the estate with dynamism and enthusiasm.

In 2020, driven by their ambition to produce one of the best wines of Margaux appellation, the two men embarked on a spectacular challenge, a form of quest for the absolute, for which the demand for environmental quality was raised to the highest possible level: building a new and unrivalled zero-carbon cellar made of raw earth. 2023 is the first vintage vinified in these pioneering facilities.

Climatic conditions:

In 2023, the viticultural season was hot and humid, with a few cold periods. The team had to be very present to protect the vines against mildew and to manage each parcel precisely. Flowering was rapid and complete, while veraison got off to a slow start. The hot weather at the end of August and beginning of September produced perfectly mature grapes, and two rain events in September improved the quality of the Cabernet Sauvignons.

Tasting notes:

The precision of Château Cantenac Brown 2023 is managed from start to finish by the technical team’s high-quality work. Its velvety, fleshy, and bright side takes you on a journey to the heart of our terroir. The dense and rich color leaves a striking impression on both the wine and the mind. The captivating aromas of red fruits and its complex nose capture the senses,
while the palate, tense yet generous, reveals a savory richness.

The 2023 Cantenac Brown, clean, quite refined bouquet with blackberry, cedar and subtle violet scents, the oak neatly integrated and lending the aromatics focus. The palate is medium-bodied with silky smooth tannins, fine acidity, good tension and energy leading to a poised finish and a long aftertaste. Very promising and very sophisticated, this will give a couple of decades' drinking pleasure, possibly more.

A dense wine, showing good concentration, structure and balance. Medium- to full-bodied, with tight but precise tannins and plenty of fresh dark berries. A touch of graphite, tobacco ash and dark chocolate too. Very well done. 71.5% cabernet sauvignon, 1.5% cabernet franc and 27% merlot. Drinkable now but better from 2027.

Medium to deep garnet-purple in color, the 2023 Cantenac Brown opens with soft-spoken, savory notes of wild sage, tapenade, and spice box leading to a core of fresh blackberries and black raspberries. The medium-bodied palate delivers expressive black fruit flavors with invigorating red berry accents and a lightly chewy texture, finishing on a peppery note.

2023 is the first vintage produced in the new, state-of-the-art gravity cellars, which really made a difference this year. Sporting a dark hue, the intense aromatic profile shoots out its blackberry, espresso, flowers, cherries, and truffle with only a single swirl. On the palate, the wine is opulent, powerful, rich, and intense, yet, it is also light on its feet due to its complementing acidities. The finish is long, intense, energetic, and rich, with layers of sweet, polished, luscious fruits, with just a hint of spice, and peppery cocoa on the back end. The wine is a blend of 71.5% Cabernet Sauvignon, 27% Merlot, and 1.5% Petit Verdot. 13.6% ABV, 3.64 pH. The Grand Vin was produced using only 52% of the harvest. Picking took place September 7 - October 6, making this the longest harvest in the history of the estate. Drink from 2029-2055. 94-96 Pts.

The 2023 Cantenac Brown is concentrated, ample and generous right out of the gate. Blackberry, incense, new leather, tobacco, menthol and chocolate are all amplified to the maximum. As is often the case, Cantenac Brown is one of the more extroverted wines in Margaux. It's a style that works so well. Readers will have to be patient, as the 2023 needs time to shed some of its baby fat.

The 2023 Cantenac Brown, now with its new eco-friendly winery under the helm of winemaker José Sanfins, has a lot of fruit intensity on the nose: blackberry and wild strawberry, with touches of melted tar and sous-bois. It's quite forward and more fruit-driven that expected. The palate is medium-bodied with rounded, very pliant tannins. It's impressively weighty and notably focused, though maybe not quite delivering the complexity and terroir expression on the finish as I found with the previous vintage.

Dark ruby, purple reflections, brightening. Fresh wild berries, fine cassis, floral touch, inviting bouquet. Juicy, elegant, fresh cherries, fine tannins, good freshness, mineral and good persistence, a subtle food wine.

The first vintage produced in the estate's new state-of-the-art winery, the 2023 Cantenac Brown has turned out very well indeed, offering up aromas of dark berries, pencil shavings and violets, followed by a medium to full-bodied, rich and layered palate that's serious and precise, concluding with a long, resonant finish. This blend of 71.5% Cabernet Sauvignon, 27% Merlot and 1.5% Cabernet Franc represents 52% of the estate's production; and it reflects both the new winery's enhanced capabilities, along with the presence of old-vine Cabernet Sauvignon derived from holdings recently acquired in the heart of the plateau of Margaux.

Impressive precision to this, offering blackcurrants, blackberries and cherries, as well as hints of cedar and dark fruit. Medium to full body. Creamy and fine tannins. Better than 2022.
