Cantenac Brown - Margaux 2008

Cantenac Brown, the most Scottish estate in Margaux

Witness of the Scottish origins of its founder John-Lewis Brown, the emblem of Cantenac Brown is its remarkable Tudor style chateau. The 60 hectares of vines are surrounding the estate and spread over Margaux and Cantenac.

José Sanfins has been managing the estate 15 years and has played a key role in the modern history of this 3rd Classified Growth. Since 2019, he and Tristan Le Lous, the new owner and an agronomist with a passion for oenology,  are very involved in managing the estate with dynamism and enthusiasm. In 2020, driven by their ambition to produce one of the best wines of Margaux appellation, the two men embarked on a spectacular challenge, a form of quest for the absolute, for which the demand for environmental quality was raised to the highest possible level: building a new and unrivalled zero-carbon cellar made of raw earth.

Deeply spiced damsons come through on the attack alongside touches of blue cheese that suggest this is just heading into the next phase of its evolution. It's still young with black fruits dominating, but you can see the tertiary black truffle, earth, leather and undergrowth notes starting to show through. This is a delicious Margaux but I would say a medium rather than long-term keeper (so in Margaux terms think 10 to 15 years more rather than upwards of 30). 33% of production in 1st wine, 60% new oak. Harvest October 1 to 19.

A beautiful effort, the medium to full-bodied 2008 demonstrates the resurgence in quality being enjoyed by this long-time Margaux underachiever. Perfumed aromas of licorice, spring flowers, black currants and subtle oak are followed by a soft, round, opulent, sexy, generous, savory wine revealing no hard edges. Enjoy this pure, seductive 2008 over the next 12-15 years. Drink 2011-2026

Editor's Choice. This château is progressing well in raising its quality as this big, chunky wine shows. The fruit has a solid texture, with great black swirls of dark berry and smoky flavors in a tannic cloak.

Dunkles Rubingranat, jugendliche Reflexe, zarter Wasserrand. In der Nase rauchig. Am Gaumen saftig, rotbeerige Frucht, angenehme Süße, gut inegrierte Tannine, zarte Zitrusanklänge im Abgang, mittlere Länge, unkomplizierter Speisenbegleiter.

Deep red-ruby. Initially reticent but deep nose hints at blueberry juice, blackberry liqueur and roasted smoky plum. Creamy and sweet on entry, with black fruit and mineral flavors given a firm edge by licorice and herbs and strong acidity. Finishes pure and long, if a little leaner than the nose would have suggested, but with noteworthy precision. This should need about three years of cellaring upon release and then give pleasure for two decades. One of the best young wines I've yet tasted from this estate. Only 33% of total production went into the grand vin

Mittleres Granat, rubinroter Rand. 2017 – 2032

For producing the finest Cantenac-Brown I have ever tasted, kudos go to the new administration and proprietor. This property has always produced a rustic, austere wine with too much tannin and muscle for its delicate Margaux personality. However, in 2008 the tannin has been tamed, and it is now sweet, ripe, and well-integrated. The wine exhibits a dense purple color in addition to a ripe bouquet of black fruits, licorice, smoke, and underbrush. It is a medium-bodied, classic Margaux that will benefit from 3-5 years of bottle age, and should keep for 20-25 years.

Bon volume de bouche, chair assez oncueuse, vin très sérieusement constitué et médocain d’allure, mais sans la diversité de nuances aromatiques et le fruit des vins situés un peu plus au nord.

Very deep crimson. Intense black berries – elderberries? - on the nose. Lots of acidity. And a strange lack of concentration. A little light, green and mild. Chewy finish. Just a bit raw overall. Fast fade. Drink 2013-19 15,5+

Like the Brane-Cantenac, this is rather muffled on the nose, lacking clarity and fruit intensity although with aeration some pleasant blackberry and briary notes emerge. Very woody though. The palate is medium-bodied, high acidity, sharp and pointed with bitter cherry, brambly fruits, black olives leading to a rather austere, woody finish. Tasted April 2009.

Dense black-red, richly concentrated, smoky blackcurrant fruit, similar richness on the palate in a solidly robust style. Drink 2014-20.

Aromas of mineral, blackberry and licorice. Full- to medium-bodied, with a solid core of fruit and fine tannins.
