Canon la Gaffelière (BIO-ORGANIC) - Saint-Emilion Grand Cru 2019

The Von Neipperg Family, a history intertwined with winegrowing

The custodian of some 800 years of winegrowing tradition, the talented Stephan von Neipperg manages the Bordeaux estates acquired by his fatherin 1971: Château Canon La Gaffelière et La Mondotte, 1er Grands Crus Classés B de Saint-Emilion, Clos de l'Oratoire, Saint-Emilion Grand Cru Classé, Clos Marsalette, Pessac-Léognan, et le Château d'Aiguilhe, Castillon - Côte de Bordeaux

Ably assisted by a team of professionals, he has brought the wines from these châteaux to the pinnacle of quality. The upcoming generation, also deeply attached to the terroir, is preparing to perpetuate the family vocation...!

Château Canon La Gaffelière, pure elegance and finesse

Located on the foot of Saint-Emilion’s southern slope, Château Canon La Gaffelière's terroir is made of clay-limestone and clay-sand soil, a very permeable soil and particularly efficient at retaining heat. The choice of grape varieties is rather atypical for the appellation in light of the soil: almost a perfect 50/50 divided between Merlot and Cabernet. The Cabernets ripen early and remarkably well on Canon La Gaffelière's warm soil, adding power and aromatic complexity to Merlot's opulence to create wines of natural elegance and finesse.

Canon La Gaffelière 2019 is likably full-bodied, feminine and amiable. The faint aroma of herbal notes and orchids seems to enable the wine to fly, allowing the sweet and ripe berry aroma light and slender. No matter it's the supple structure or the silky tannins, every detail is permeated with a charming smile. It can be drunk at youth as well as after aging. It is an excellent Saint-Emilion that can be applauded by both the consumers and professional wine critics alike. Aromas of dark plums, blueberries, bark, dried leaves, mahogany, licorice and nutmeg. It’s medium-to full-bodied with silky, ripe tannins. Layered and supple with a stylish and polished finish. Voluptuous. One of the best in a long time. Drink from 2026.

The 2019 Château Canon-La-Gaffelière is another brilliantly perfumed wine in the vintage that shines for its complexity, finesse, and nuances. Giving up awesome notes of red and black currants, tobacco, exotic flowers, cedarwood, and loamy earth, it hits the palate with medium to full-bodied richness, beautifully polished, integrated tannins, no hard edges, and a great, great finish. This is serious juice that warrants at least 4-5 years of bottle age and will evolve for 30 to 40 years.

The 2019 Canon la Gaffelière has turned out brilliantly, bursting from the glass with a dramatic bouquet of wild berries, blood orange, exotic spices, rose petals, violets and burning embers. Full-bodied, ample and layered, it's supple and perfumed, with a deep core of lively fruit, melting tannins and a long, saline finish. This contains the highest proportion of Cabernet Franc of any of Stephan Von Neipperg's wines, which no doubt helps to account for its singular personality.

The 2019 Canon La Gaffelière bides its time in the glass, tightly wound at first, then unfurling to reveal vivacious red berries, crushed violet and light iodine aromas that are all exquisitely defined. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit and perfectly judged acidity, seamless and harmonious. It gently builds with just the right amount of sapidity on the finish. Is this among the best Canon-la-Gaffelière ever made? Most definitely.

Medium to deep garnet-purple in color, the 2019 Canon la Gaffeliere opens with an incredibly evocative perfume of lilacs, Morello cherries, black raspberries, jasmine and Sichuan pepper over a core of ripe black plums, wild blueberries and dark chocolate with touches of iron ore and cumin seed. The medium to full-bodied palate reveals an edifying intensity of electric blue and black fruit layers, supported by a rock-solid frame of firm, finely grained tannins and bold freshness, finishing long with a firework display of fruit, mineral and spicy nuances. A thrilling wine from the get-go and one that should age very well!

The 2019 Canon La Gaffelière is a nervous, tightly wound wine. Then again, we are talking about a Cabernet Franc-driven Saint-Émilion. Sweet red berries, mint, blood orange and spice pulse with tremendous energy. Aromatically expressive and deep, Canon La Gaffelière builds effortlessly over time, leading to a bright, saline and mineral-drenched finish that is a thing of beauty. The 2019 shows much better from a full bottle (as opposed to a half), with silky tannins that emerge with a touch of aeration. I won't be surprised if the 2019 is even better from bottle than this note suggests.

The 2019 Canon La Gaffelière was picked from 19 September to 7 October at 51hl/ha and sees 60% new oak. It has a very focused bouquet, tight at first and benefitting from an hour's aeration. Eventually it reveals glorious red berry scents mixed with cedar, loamy soil and a pinch of cracked black pepper. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, a fine bead of acidity, taut and fresh with a return of that black pepper note right on the finish. Excellent.

Deep in color, initially you notice mint, flowers, forest leaf and red and black fruits. Rich, supple, silky and fresh, with an opulent, fruit-filled mid-palate and finish, the chalky sensations coming from crushed rocks, stone and a hint of spice with more of that gorgeous mint and pure pit fruits taste and feels just great in the finish. The wine was made from blending 49% Merlot, 39% Cabernet Franc and 12% Cabernet Sauvignon. 95-97 Pts

Blackberry, chocolate and hazelnut aromas and flavors. It's medium-to full-bodied with polished, juicy tannins that give a dusty texture to the intense, rich finish. A traditional, classically structured and styled red.

I love the balance on display here, of powerful and softly whispering fruits, a tightrope of acidity and tannins giving structure. Great stuff, with the impact of 2018 but more freshness, although still with the signature glamour of a Neipperg wine in full flight.

An immediately distinctive and classy nose, the subtlety and fragrance of 39% Cabernet Franc clear, lightly but clearly minerally; medium-full, moderately concentrated, fresh in acidity, lightly to moderately tannic, a particularly elegant balance; an effortless performance on the palate, restrained, sweetly ripe, mouthcoatingly fragrant, long without being large, refined, satisfying, subtle St-Emilion, with raspberry-fragrant persistence. Not a big wine, not particularly concentrated, but all there in a lovely, restrained style. Classic, fine St-Emilion in the nicest sense. This will give a lot of understated, stylish mezzoforte pleasure relatively early on but, given its overall harmony, for many years, too. My kind of fine St-Emilion! (On a ses habitudes!) 2026–45+.
