Camensac - Haut-Médoc 2022

The estate

Camensac means the path leading to the water in the old “gascon” dialect. Indeed the people of Saint-Laurent-Médoc used to go to the “jales” either to get some water or to board a boat. The Charterhouse dates from the 18th century. The Cuvelier and the Forner families successively owned Camensac. In 2005, this Grand Cru Classé in 1855 is purchased by Jean Merlaut and his niece Céline Villars-Foubet. Jean-Pierre Foubet, her husband, took over the management.

The assets are now gathered to give back its sheen and prestigious image to the estate: a great land, know-how and a strong experience thanks to the other success stories of the family: Gruaud-Larose and Chasse Spleen.

Impressive intensity, and you can see the work that has been going on at Camensac over the past decade brought out by the success of 2022. Has a chalky edge to the tannins, combined with slim rosebud florals, tight through the opening then softens to damson, soft crayon and grilled caramel. Tasted in recent château vertical also, same score. Villars-Foubet and Merlaut owners, harvest September 8 to 27.

Smoky red and black fruits, spicy oak, and leafy tobacco notes shine in the 2022 Château De Camensac, a medium-bodied, concentrated 2022 that has ripe yet building tannins, solid balance, and outstanding length. The blend is 59% Cabernet Sauvignon and 41% Merlot, from gravelly soils, and there were over 16,000 cases produced.

2026-2037 90/100

The 2022 Château de Camensac has a potent, finely delineated Japanese nori-tinged bouquet, with notes of blackberry, wild hedgerow and a touch of brine. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp tannins, a crunchy texture and a keen line of acidity. Touches of graphite on the finish complete a well-crafted Camensac to drink over the next 15 years.

Quite a scented and layered nose of spiced berries, pencil shavings, white pepper and creme de cassis. Quite refined and pretty, with a medium to full body and firm, polished tannins. Poised, juicy and long. One of the best Camensacs I have tasted, and it’s a great value for this excellent vintage. Drink from 2027.

The 2022 de Camensac is a very serious wine and also a huge overachiever in its peer group. Vertical and explosive in the glass, the 2022 stains the palate with inky dark fruit. Sage, mint, tobacco, incense and licorice are strands in the wine's gorgeous fabric of aromas and flavors. I especially admire the depth, persistence and overall substance here. Superb.

Sweet black cherry, bilberry and cassis fruits from the first moments, this has impressive stucture and is well built, with a slow build to the tannins as it opens through the palate. Spiced black chocolate and slate on the finish, ticks all the Left Bank boxes, closes down on the finish where the concentration threatens to overwhelm, but a clear sign that this is a vintage worth your time. Harvest September 8 to 27

Supple and mouthwatering so you get texture and liveliness straight away. Tannins come in fairly quickly and give some restriction and tension to the palate, narrowing on the finish but keeping the fruit intensity. This has style, and good juiciness, but the liquorice, clove, saltiness and generally quite massy tannins take over. Has good potential, does feel well worked and there's precision to the overall frame. Tasted twice. Harvest 8-27 September.

Medium deep crimson. Fresh black cherry, brambly, violet, hint wood varnish aromas. Concentrated black cherry, blackcurrant, touch spicy flavours, chalky bitter firm tannins and some attractive savoury oak notes. Firm abrupt finish. (Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot 40% new oak)

Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2022 de Camensac is a little closed to start off, opening out to wafts of lavender, cedar chest, and pencil lead, giving way to a core of blackcurrant jelly and kirsch. The medium to full-bodied palate has a firm, grainy backbone and seamless freshness framing the generous black fruits, finishing with impressive length.

Currants, blackberries, cedar and tobacco leaf work perfectly here. The wine has ample fruit and freshness with a savory edge to the currant and cranberry finish. A year or two in the cellar will add even more to the wine. Drink from 2026-2038.

Dark berries and flowers here with hints of nut shell. Medium-bodied. Linear tannins and a firm finish. Juicy.
