Brio - Margaux 2021

Cantenac Brown, the most Scottish estate in Margaux

Witness of the Scottish origins of its founder John-Lewis Brown, the emblem of Cantenac Brownis its remarkable Tudor style chateau. The 60 hectares of vines surrounding it are spread over the prestigious plateaus of Margaux and Cantenac.

Since the end of 2019, with the arrival of Le Lous Family, a new wind of enthusiasm has been blowing across the team of this 3rd Classified Growth in 1855. Today, Tristan Le Lous, an agronomist with a passion for oenology and the owner, and José Sanfins, general manager, are very involved in managing the estate and are inextricably linked with the estate’s modern history. The meeting of this twosome was a pivotal milestone.

BriO de Cantenac Brown is a charming, delicate and bright wine.

Tasting notes :
The harvest vats are very aromatic with notable hints of raspberry. The Merlots are soer than usual and the Cabernets more concentrated.
The blend of the two varietals should give a round and full-bodied wine, with ne and elegant tannins. Typically Bordeaux.
The blend confirms our choice. The balance is excellent between acidity and roundness.

The 2021 Brio de Cantenac Brown is a tasty, easygoing wine to drink now and over the next decade. Soft contours and pretty aromatics add to its sense of immediacy. Sweet pipe tobacco, cedar, dried herbs, mint and coffee linger on the understated finish.

A medium-bodied, well-balanced and savory red with sleek tannins. Plenty of blackberry, tobacco and iodine character. Dried herbs and some white pepper, too. Sleek, mineral finish. 60% merlot, 29% cabernet sauvignon and 11% cabernet franc.

Floral, fruity and fresh, the Merlot based, medium-bodied wine is round, soft, approachable and finishes with chocolate covered, black raspberries and cherries. Drink from 2023-2029. 88-90

The 2021 Brio de Cantenac Brown is in a bit of a delicate phase right now. Strong Cabernet inflections add character to the red/purplish and blood orange fruit. There is a slightly vegetal quality that is concerning. That note will either soften with time, or become more pronounced. Let's see what happens.

Nez de murier, de fruits noirs, de cassis pour un bouquet gourmand et élégant. Bouche droite, juteuse, fraiche pour un vin légèrement amer mais très bien équilibré. Vin de plaisir.

Notes of sweet berries, plums and licorice introduce the 2021 Brio de Cantenac Brown, a medium-bodied, ample and charming wine that's supple and delicate. José Sanfins opted to sell some lots in bulk this year, to improve the quality of the Brio, and the result is a pretty, cleanly made, Merlot-dominant cuvée that will drink well young.

Layers of black cherry on the attack, crunchy fresh fruit character with touches of chocolate shavings alongside a brighter blueberry and raspberry bite. The dry summer and heat during harvest meant atypical levels of concentration even in this second wine, but they were clearly careful with extraction, and fermented at 25/26°C maximum to ensure the fruit was in focus. This is the lowest amount of Cabernet Sauvignon in Brio to date because the Cabernets were so good that they put them in the first wine (and also no doubt because yields were so low they had to make choices). They also did a third selection for the first time to ensure quality stayed high for Brio (this was sold en vrac). 25% new oak, 49% of overall production.
