Branaire Ducru - Saint-Julien 2006

The year 2006 started with a very wet winter which allowed to refill the ground water of the soils.
There was very little rain in April and May. June was extremely dry - 2mm of rain for the whole month - and July was drier than in 2003. The temperatures in June and July were above average. All these factors were very much in favour of the production of quality grapes.
August however was more contrasted with rather cool temperatures compared with the average. The second half of August was rather humid, although it did not rain that much - 51mm versus 36.5mm in 2003.
The first 10 days of September was magnificent: dry weather and high temperatures (30°) in the afternoon - which accelerated the ripening of the grapes. September 8th the hydric status measured on the reference plots showed hydric stress of a very good level. The values were nearly the same as the ones observed at the same time in 2005. Things were looking hopeful: the grapes were gorgeous and the first analyses show great concentrations in sugar and polyphenolic components as well as exceptionnally round tannins.
The week of September 11th was less favourable with stormy rains.

Tasted at Bordeaux Index's annual 10-Year On tasting in London. The 2006 Château Branaire-Ducru has a lifted forest floor, minty bouquet that needs to show more fruit intensity. It just lacks a little conviction. The palate is medium-bodied with chewy tannin, a little rustic compared to its peers with a grainy, quite savory finish that needs more depth. This is drinking perfectly now and I would not leave it more than several years. Tasted January 2016.

Dunkles Granat, rubinroter Rand.

Deep purplish. Very sweet, succulent start. Seems as though a lot of work has gone in here to polish the tannins and moderate the acidity but perhaps at the expense of a bit of freshness, attack and personality? Bit of a civil servant of a wine. It certainly won't shock anyone... Drink 2013-2020

There's lots of blackberry, licorice and tar on the nose. Full-bodied, with soft tannins and plenty of fruit. Not the most complex wine, but outstanding. Best after 2014.

By no means comparable to their sensational 2005 or 2003, but still an outstanding wine, this singular St.-Julien always possesses notes of spring flowers, boysenberries, black currants, and graphite. The complex aromatics are followed by a medium-bodied, classic Bordeaux displaying a deep ruby/purple color as well as moderately high tannin. It needs 3-5 years of bottle age, and should last for two decades or more. Drink 2011-2032 90+

(not yet fined) Full ruby-red. Sexy aromas of currant, chocolate, mocha and coffee. Dense, firm and sweet, with chateau-typical flavors of currant, minerals and chocolate and very good breadth. Finishes pure and fruity, with spreading tannins and lingering notes of black cherry and minerals. This makes the young 2007 seem a bit dry by comparison.

Deep colour, fine, softly, extracted, pure blackcurrant fruit, lovely fragrance that carries through to a silkiness on the palate, prime example of St-Julien finesse. 2012-20

Tiefdunkles Rubingranat, jugendliche Reflexe, violetter Rand.

Proprietor Patrick Maroteaux continues to ratchet up the quality level at this impeccably run St.-Julien estate. The 2006 is similar to the 1996 Branaire, but with sweeter fruit. A deep ruby/purple hue precedes a perfumed nose of sweet boysenberries, black cherries, minerals, spring flowers, and a hint of pain grille in the background. Fresh, savory, medium to full-bodied flavors coat the palate with beautiful purity, no hard edges, ripe tannin, and intense fruit. This elegant, layered, impressive offering will be at its peak between 2012-2025.

Zurückhaltend und blumig, verführerisch, einmal mehr grandios gearbeitet, frisch, saftig, elegant, dicht, ohne Exzess an Konzentration oder Alkojol; sehr schöner, blumig-fruchtiger Wein. 2014 bis 2025

Tasted at the UGC. A little muffled on the blackberry, cranberry and graphite scented nose that has a lot of vanillary new oak. The palate is full-bodied, layered with toasty black fruits laced with a touch of burnt toast. Supple tannins, very lithe and endearing, but like Beychevelle it needs more backbone. Still a fresh, pert finish with just a touch of greenness that detracts very little from the overall wine. Good potential.

Very dry, dense wine, solidly packed with firm layers of ripe, but dark tannins. Spice, dry wood and packed tannins. But there is a lift to finish, with delicious, fresh acidity. —R.V.

Very dark crimson with a blackish streak. So glossy. Indistinct and not especially expressive nose. Oddly a bit loose and unfocussed on the palate despite the dramatic look. Bit like a cup of tepid tea. Dies a little on the end though a great deal of effort has clearly gone into it. Fruit a bit smashed. Neat but fades.

Very solid, with good fruit and a complete core of ripe tannins. Medium- to full-bodied, with velvety tannins and a medium to full finish. I prefer this to the 2004. Very close to 92-94.
