There is enough fruit here and also enough weight to just about work. The oak is not too dominant either, and while this is a fairly quiet Bouscaut, there is some class here, and it will relax into early-drinking, medium-weight form before too long. 15.5

This is a Bouscaut with clear freshness to it, more than many vintages, but still with damson fruits and lovely white pepper notes. Enjoyable, balanced, more austere than normal, but their exuberant approach carries through in the tannin quality, and there is still signature glamour, in short supply in 2021 reds. Will fill out further over ageing, and then needs a few years to soften, but will begin delivering within four or five years. Tasted twice.

Rubinrot, feine, rotfruchtige Nase, Himbeeren, Tabak, ein Hauch Vanille und Sauerkirschen. Der Gaumen ist straff, schlank, die Tannine sind reif, der Wein nicht zu stark extrahiert, saftig und erstaunlich elegant, zeigt der Wein im Abgang eine gute Länge. Avec une pointe de verdeur et de notes de murier, Bouscaut rouge est représentatif de ce millésime peu solaire. A l'aération, notes de fruits noirs, de cassis et d'épices. Bouche légère à moyennement dense, une acidité élégante et fraiche et une tension d'ensemble qui laisse le vin sur une allonge aérienne en finale. Ce sera un joli vin de plaisir à consommer dans 10 à 15 ans maximum.

The 2021 Bouscaut reveals aromas of plummy fruit and creamy new oak, followed by a medium to full-bodied, tangy and rather chewy palate that illustrates the limitations of extractive winemaking styles in a vintage of marginal maturity.

Dark bramble tones on the nose. The palate is light and friendly, the initial fruit flavour has a sharp almost sour edge, focused and majoring on red berry fruit before the tannins come in and close things down a bit too soon giving the dry, chalky, mineral-edged texture to the tongue and palate. There is a nice cooling undercurrent and a long finish suggesting ageing will give cohesion to this. Good effort in the vintage. 1% Petit Verdot completes the blend.
