Beychevelle - Saint-Julien 2019

49% Merlot, 46% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3% Petit Verdot, 2% Cabernet Franc
60% new barrels
Alc.: 13,70%

The 2019 wines have good, strong colours, well-defined, fresh fruit, and a more moderate alcohol content than the previous vintage; their tannic structures reveal impressive elegance and depth. The volumes harvested enabled a very rigorous selection - around 55% - to produce a grand vin in the tradition of its predecessors.
Philippe Blanc, who celebrated his twenty-fifth vintage at Château Beychevelle this year, is very confident that 2019 will continue a high-quality series never previously encountered in Bordeaux and specifically at Château Beychevelle.

It feels like a "tough guy" from the deep color, but both the nose and palate are surprisingly "exquisite and bijou", creating a wonderful image reminding me of the "fairy kitty" after the floral spa. The fragrance of sweet, juicy berries is accompanied by passionate spices, offering a beam of glory around the glass. Silky tannins contribute to the purely clean palate; even though this has 60% of new oak, it is still seamlessly balanced towards the finish. Such a masterpiece of Beychevelle. ?????????,?????“???”,???????????????“????”,??????????????????“???”??????????????????????,?????????????????????????,????????????60% ,??????????,????????????

Gorgeous aromas of currants, crushed stones, blackberries and flowers. Full-bodied with refined tannins that are long and very polished. Creamy texture. It goes on for minutes. Lovely energy and sophistication to this. Try after 2026.

Coming in close to equal parts Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, with just a splash of Cabernet Franc, the 2019 Château Beychevelle shows a classic Saint-Julien purity and finesse-driven style as well as notes of red and blue fruits, sappy flowers, tobacco, and chalky minerality. Medium to full-bodied on the palate, I love its overall balance and purity of fruit, it has silky tannins, no hard edges, and a great finish. This wine always has upfront appeal, but the 2019 will benefit from 4-5 years of bottle age and should have 30 years of overall longevity.

Aromas of raspberries, currants, pencil shavings and sweet spices introduce the 2019 Beychevelle, a medium to full-bodied, supple and enveloping wine that's fleshy and seamless, with a generous core of fruit, ripe tannins and succulent acids, concluding with an expansive finish. This is an open-knit, demonstrative Saint-Julien that will offer a broad drinking window.

Beychevelle has been on a roll, especially these last few years. I expected quite a bit more from the 2019, but the two bottles I have tasted so far have been marked by an awkward combination of super-ripe fruit, vegetal notes and hard, aggressive contours. 87?

The 2019 Beychevelle presents a perfumed nose of blackberry, wilted rose petals, incense and a touch of violet that ebbs with aeration. Elegant, poised and focused, this is a succinct and quite complex Saint-Julien. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins and wonderful depth, still retaining the discreet marine influence but showing a little more depth and rondeur on the persistent finish. This is a delicious Beychevelle. 13.7° alcohol

Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2019 Beychevelle explodes from the glass with bombastic scents of crème de cassis, blueberry preserves and baked plums with touches of menthol, cinnamon toast and smoked meats plus a waft of dark chocolate. The medium-bodied palate injects fantastic energy into the decadent black and blue fruit flavors, framed by exquisitely ripe, finely-grained tannins and bold freshness, finishing with great length and freshness.

The 2019 Beychevelle is a rich, unctuous wine. Blackberry jam, cloves, licorice, bittersweet chocolate and torrefaction infuse the 2019 with tons of darkness that works well with the wine's flamboyant personality. Beychevelle will appeal most to readers who enjoy exotic, super-ripe wines. In 2019, Beychevelle pushes the limits, in my view.

The 2019 Beychevelle, one of the only wines that I actually tasted at the château with Philippe Blanc prior to lockdown, has a wonderful bouquet with detailed blackberry, briary, cedar and light touches of mocha unfurling from the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, a fine bead of acidity, a discrete marine influence taking over towards the finish. There is a tang of seaweed and brine on the aftertaste. It keeps you coming back for more. This is a great 2019 from Blanc and his team though we must wait to see if it will surpass their 2018.

Deep in color, with a floral, blackberry, cedar, cherry, cocoa and tobacco leaf nose. On the palate, the wine is soft, polished, elegant and with depth of flavor. There is freshness, a good mid-palate, length, purity and loads of sweet black and dark red fruits with silky tannins in the finish. Made from blending 46% Cabernet Sauvignon, 49% Merlot, 3% Petit Verdot and 2% Cabernet Franc and reaching 13.7% alcohol with a pH of 3.77, the harvest took place September 23 to October 11. 50% of the harvest was placed into the Grand Vin. 95-97 Pts

Rich, layered red with lots of ripe fruit and creamy, round tannins. Yet, it's fresh and refined at the same time. Flavorful finish. Ripe and solid. Equal to the 2018 in quality.

Merlot-blackberry ripeness to the fore at the moment; medium-full wine with a nice
concentration, fresh and moderately tannic; a sweetly ripe, juicy core flavor, succulent and
seductive for St-Julien (look at the proportion of Merlot here), almost lip-smackingly appealing, but also subtle and classy and complex, and with fine fruit length, if a little oak-dry at the moment. Very good, if not top, Beychevelle. Likely to need time to absorb its slight oak-dryness. 2032–45+.
