Bernard Magrez - Saint-Estèphe 2018

Acquired in 2016, the Château Bernard Magrez property is situated in the heart of the St Estèphe appellation. From its height of 29 metres, its unique terroir dominates the vineyards of the appellation. Excellent natural drainage, a climate tempered by the proximity of the Gironde estuary and the Atlantic Ocean and the remarkable diversity of its soils characterise this vineyard. Château Bernard Magrez is destined to produce rare wines of exceptional quality.

The 2018 Bernard Magrez is a powerhouse. Black cherry fruit, chocolate, gravel, smoke, game, licorice and scorched earth convey brooding intensity, an impression reinforced by huge, burly tannins. This is an especially potent style. Just as I thought from barrel, it would be nice to see more character here.

The sweet, ripe red fruits has a nice polish to them. Round, juicy and bright, the finish has nice staying power with plenty of fruit and a dose of cocoa in every sip. The wine blends 70% Merlot with 30% Cabernet Sauvignon.

The 2018 Bernard Magrez, formerly "Magrez La Peyre," comes in an extremely heavy bottle. It has a lush bouquet of black cherries, crème de cassis and violets, very similar to how it came across in barrel. The palate is full-bodied with layers of ripe black cherry and cassis fruit, and plush and sweet with citrus peel/orange zest toward the finish, which is actually more restrained than expected. It just misses some personality. Not a Saint-Estèphe that sticks in the mind.

A red with very pure blackberry, currant and clove, as well as hints of white pepper. It’s medium-to full-bodied with integrated, refined tannins and a creamy-textured finish. Finely crafted young red. Drink after 2023.

The 2018 Bernard Magrez is the new name for "Magrez La Peyre" that comes from the titular lieu-dit in the Marbuzet sector that he acquired in 2016. It has a glossy bouquet with opulent black cherry, crème de cassis and blueberry aromas that needs to express more typicité of the appellation. The palate is full-bodied with sweet ripe tannins: candied red and black fruit, powerful and confit-like, though like the nose, it just comes across as a little generic and monolithic on the finish. Pleasurable, but I am sure there is better to come.

Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2018 Magrez La Peyre opens with spice cake, baked plums and crème de cassis with hints of dried flowers and licorice. Full-bodied, super rich and densely packed, it has plush, fine-grained tannins and just enough freshness with a long, spicy finish.

This is a very beautiful St.-Estèphe with spice, dark-berry and hazelnut character. Medium body, firm and silky tannins and a flavorful finish. Shows focus and tension.
