Berliquet - Saint-Emilion Grand Cru 2023

Château Berliquet, a hanging garden

Château Berliquet, Grand Cru Classé owned by CHANEL since 2017, is located on the heights of Saint-Emilion. Here, it is the landscape that catches the eye. As a true haven of greenery, Berliquet's garden is an open-air cabinet of curiosities where vines and plant species find their balance. Plants and vines thrive and teach the winegrower about the terroir of this hanging garden.

Unchanged for nearly 200 years, the 10ha large vineyard plunges towards the Dordogne. From the limestone plateau to the bottom of the hill, the sections of soils of different compositions can clearly be seen. At the top, the limestone pavement, and then, moving further down, more clay is present. At Berliquet, a lot of work is done by hand or using animal traction, with respect for living things and for the landscape. Here, the Merlots and Cabernet Francs are rooted and pampered.

The wine of Berliquet reflects this very special atmosphere. It expresses the tension of the limestone and the power of the clays. Château Berliquet reveals its personality, airy like that of its neighbour Château Canon, but also earthy, with its own clay imprint

The 2023 Vintage:

Climatic conditions:

The 2023 vintage was marked by a mild, dry winter, followed by a mild, wet spring with beautiful flowering. The summer was mixed, hot and humid then cool and dry. Finally, autumn was warm and sunny during the harvest.

Tasting notes:

The fruit is there. Its sweetness marks the air, confusing nose and palate as it bursts from the glass. A very pure fruit, with hints of cherry and a round, expressive balance. It has the suave, sapid volume of blackberry and the clear, prominent energy of bramble - sap and fruit in one, the new work of a vine orchard.

The 2023 Berliquet, replicating its showing from barrel, is initially reticent on the nose. It opens with blackberry, cedar and light marine notes, verging on oyster shell aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with a keen line of acidity that cuts through the spicy black fruit. More vigor comes through on the structured second half with a pleasingly persistent, sapid finish. One to watch...

Fresh, crunchy red cherries, red berries, chalk and hibiscus on the nose. Medium-bodied on the palate, with fresh, bright acidity, fine tannins and a very succulent finish. Lovely brightness and acidity here gives lots of energy and drinkability. More about freshness and finesse here. 59% merlot and 41% cabernet franc. Lovely now, but can hold.

Tasted multiple times, the 2023 Château Berliquet is a smoking 2023 with tons of character. Ripe red and black fruits, spice box, truffly earth, and some graphite notes all define the aromatics, and it's medium to full-bodied, with a supple, layered, elegant mouthfeel, integrated acidity, and ripe tannins. It's clearly outstanding, if not quite a bit more.

Berliquet (St Emilion; 59% Merlot; 41% Cabernet Franc; a final yield of 45 hl/ha; pH 3.53; 14% alcohol; tasted first at the UGCB press tasting at the Cité du Vin and then at Canon – last wine tasted on a long day and it shone). The first vintage vinified in the new vat room, with 15 smaller vats replacing the 9 larger vats of the past. That helps explain the gain in precision here. We are now very close to Canon in qualitative terms. The character of the two terroirs are, however, very different (with the combination of plateau and côteaux here giving this an additional sense of vertical depth). Floral, aromatically just a little closed and intimate but one is immediately enticed. A gorgeous cedar builds with very little aeration. More gravitas, in fact, than Canon but with much the same fruit intensity. More earthy rather than chalky. The Cabernet Franc signature is so gentle and gracious. Beguiling. Violets. Irises. Lavender and rosemary. Supple and plump on the palate but quite delicate which allows the Cabernet Franc to really express itself. Glorious calcaire tannins gently sculpt this and release too that signature limestone salinity. Excellent in a very delicate and elegant way. Lovely cool harmony, with lots of menthol. Exciting. The best ever from here. Another coup de Coeur (this part of the alphabet in Saint Émilion seems incredibly strong this year!).

A blend of 59% Merlot and 41% Cabernet Franc, the 2023 Berliquet has a pH of 3.53 and it is ageing in 10% amphorae and 90% oak barriques, of which 34% are new. It has a deep garnet-purple color and it hops from the glass with fragrant notes of wild blueberries, plum preserves, and kirsch, followed by hints of lilacs, fragrant soil, and cardamom. The medium-bodied palate is bright and energetic, with intense red and black berry layers and super-silky tannins, finishing with wonderful length and tension.

With a single swirl, the wine is floral, with raspberries, black cherries, plums, cigar wrapper and spice. The wine is medium-bodied, elegant, energetic, and spicy, with layers of sweet, and pure, red berries with lift, and energy that you feel on the mineral-accented backend. This is the first vintage produced in the irnew cellar, which expanded from 9 tanks to 24 vats, allowing for parcel by parcel vinification. You can taste and feel the difference here. The wine blends 59% Merlot, with 41% Cabernet Franc. 14% ABV. Drink from 2026-2048. 93-95 Pts.

Heavy black pepper spice, good lift through the palate, powerful drive and energy, with sculpted blue and black fruits and a pumice stone scrape. Harvest September 13 to October 5, 45hl/ha yield. 45hl/ha yield, in organic conversion. Tasted twice.

The 2023 Berliquet marks another important step forward for this château. Floral aromatics are immediately alluring. Bright, sculpted fruit and vibrant acids convey finesse through to the saline, delineated finish. This is the first vintage made in the new cellar, which surely helps. Élevage is in French oak and amphora. Berliquet is all charm in 2023. Tasted four times.

The 2023 Berliquet was picked 23 September to October 5 at 45hL/ha, matured in 34% new oak plus 10 amphorae. Initially, the nose is quite backward and doesn't want to play. Give it a few swirls and it opens to reveal black cherries, blackcurrant and a distant tang of oyster shell emanating from limestone soils. The palate is medium-bodied with a very harmonious entry. Finely weighted, tensile and slightly savory in style, this is very elegant, finishing with citrus-like freshness. Berliquet has definitely been in the ascendant in recent vintages, and this is another to add.

Dark ruby, purple reflections, brightening on the rim. Fresh red cherries, floral touch, some nougat and vanilla, inviting bouquet. Juicy, elegant, fine tannins, good fresh- ness, a wine with charm and length, good ageing potential, a versatile food wine.

The 2023 Berliquet is the first vintage produced in the estate's new winery, equipped with double the number of vats, permitting proper separation of blocks. That's especially important, as Berliquet is a more diverse terroir than Canon, and it can now be interpreted with much more precision. Offering up aromas of cherries, black raspberries, licorice and violets, it's medium to full-bodied, pillowy and layered, with a fleshy core of concentrated fruit, refined, chalky tannins and lively acids.

Some damson and plum fruit on the nose, dark scents with blueberry. High toned and zingy, the fruit is forward and alive on the palate, sharp and high toned, really fun and lifted. A nice, open and alive expression centred around the perky summer berry fruit with edges of wet stones, graphite and pencil lead. A bit of waxy crayon in there too. It’s certainly finessed, maybe not as openly charming as Berliquet can be, this has more of a youthful, high acidity style. Tart but well controlled, a really lively glass of wine, so much energy and really does make you want another sip. 3.53pH. First vintage produced in the new winery with more vats for plot-by-plot vinification. Ageing 16-18 months ageing, 34% new barrels and 10 amphoras. A yield of 45hl/ha.
