Berliquet - Saint-Emilion Grand Cru 2022

Château Berliquet, a hanging garden

Château Berliquet, Grand Cru Classé owned by CHANEL since 2017, is located on the heights of Saint-Emilion. Here, it is the landscape that catches the eye. As a true haven of greenery, Berliquet's garden is an open-air cabinet of curiosities where vines and plant species find their balance. Plants and vines thrive and teach the winegrower about the terroir of this hanging garden.

Unchanged for nearly 200 years, the 10ha large vineyard plunges towards the Dordogne. From the limestone plateau to the bottom of the hill, the sections of soils of different compositions can clearly be seen. At the top, the limestone pavement, and then, moving further down, more clay is present. At Berliquet, a lot of work is done by hand or using animal traction, with respect for living things and for the landscape. Here, the Merlots and Cabernet Francs are rooted and pampered.

The wine of Berliquet reflects this very special atmosphere. It expresses the tension of the limestone and the power of the clays. Château Berliquet reveals its personality, airy like that of its neighbour Château Canon, but also earthy, with its own clay imprint

The 2022 vintage

Tasting notes

Initially floral on the nose. Centifolia rose joins forces with blackberry and is emboldened by its fruitiness, allowing the depth of the vintage to shine through. Both have their thorns, offering up a wild touch, then rounding out into gourmand notes. The aromas continue to gain in intensity as the wine is aerated. The fruit is red with a touch of liquorice. On the palate the wine is fleshy and beautifully textured, skilfully enhancing its density. The finish boasts a limestone framework, delicately saline and above all very lingering.
Bewitching.

In the 2022 Château Berliquet, I can almost detect the shadow of Château Canon. The rich clay gives the wine a deep, sturdy structure, perfectly complementing the natural salinity of the limestone. The aromas of sour plums and myrtle berries, mature yet delicate, sweep away any traces of the dryness from the 2022 vintage. Back in 2020, I described Château Berliquet as ‘a wild horse restrained.’ After two years of careful refinement, it has now found its own rhythm and pace. This vintage is so enticing, and it fills me with great anticipation for what the future holds…

The 2022 Berliquet offers up lovely aromas of raspberries, cherries, violets and pencil shaving, followed by a medium to full-bodied, lively and seamless palate that's dense and muscular, with rich tannin and a mineral finish. As readers will remember, this is an estate on the rise, with changes including opting to retain higher canopies, which means that the fruiting zone of rows planted along the slope are now shaded, preserving freshness.

A small 7.5ha vineyard with limestone cellars underneath, on plateau overlooking the valley below. Investment from owners Chanel over last few years is beginning to make its presence felt. This is really tasty, love the sense of lift and chalkiness to the structure that gives a cushion to the fruit, a great quality Berliquet, delivers on En Primeur promise. 44% new oak barrels, 8 amphoras, the rest in one year old barrel, 45hl/h yield. In organic conversion.

A richer, darker-fruited wine than its big brother Canon, the 2022 Château Berliquet comes from slightly more clay soils and is always a bigger, broader wine, especially when compared to Canon and its neighbors on the upper plateau. It offers more currant and black cherry fruit as well as scorched earth, chocolate, and truffly aromas and flavors that gain persistence and intensity with time in the glass. These carry to a rich, full-bodied Saint-Emilion that has a beautifully layered mouthfeel, plenty of mid-palate depth, and a great finish. The level of purity and precision here is exceptional. The 2022 is 65% Merlot and 35% Cabernet Franc, from a mix of clay and limestone soils on the upper plateau, that spent 16 months in 44% new French oak, with 8% in amphora. It will evolve nicely over the coming 20-25 years.

Finale persistante. Un vin tonique et salivant ! 2026-2047 94/100

The 2022 Berliquet has a little more horsepower on the nose compared to its stablemate, Château Canon, although it does not possess the same mineralité and delineation. Black cherry, blueberry and light violet scents mix with iodine. The palate is medium-bodied with a sapid black fruit note and quite grippy tannins. This is an assertive Berliquet that deserves four to five years in bottle. It’s very fine…but I think there will be even better with age.

Aromatic and fresh with sandalwood and dark fruit as well as bark and mushrooms. Medium-bodied with creamy tannins and a savory finish. Juicy is the word. Very attractive now but better in three to four years.

The 2022 Berliquet continues to impress under its new ownership. Deep, plush and generous, Berliquet shows the richness of the year in its broad-shouldered, ample personality. Plum, black cherry, rose petal, cedar and leather build nicely. This was the last vintage made in the old cellar. It spent 16 months in a combination of French oak barrels and amphora.

Juicy, supple, delicate and refined with a lovely texture and acidity that grips the mouth and says 'drink me'. Crystalline cool blue fruit, pure and well defined, this is pulsing with life, vibrant and present. Powerful and filling with a generous core, playful and friendly but complex and concentrated too. Confident with bite and appealing chalkiness at the finish. Clean and pure, so easy to enjoy still with structure and balance and a salty stone minerality on the finish. In organic conversion. Yield of 45hl/ha.

In Château Berliquet 2022, I caught a glimpse of Château Canon 2022 in its shadow. The rich clay imbues the wine with a profound structure that beautifully complements the limestone's innate salinity. Swirling the glass, the aromas of sour plum and juicy yellow plum fill the air, wiping away any trace of the dryness characteristic of the 2022 vintage. In 2020, I described Château Berliquet as a "wild horse in captivity." Now, after two years of cultivating, it has found its rhythm and transformed into "a magnificent stallion parading in dressage". Château Berliquet has a bright and promising future.

The 2022 Berliquet was picked from 29 August to 14 September and matured in 44% new oak. The wood is a little more prominent on the nose than the Canon, with black cherries, bilberry and light oyster shell scents. The palate is medium-bodied with succulent tannins. This is a juicy Berliquet that probably belies the structure underneath. There's more red fruit toward the finish, with a touch of pepper on the aftertaste.

Dark damson colour, beautiful sense of upliflt and freshness, with mint leaf, sage, wild rosemary, cassis fruits. Slate texture to the wine here, feels carved out and crafted, with edges of austerity that constrict the cassis and raspberry fruit. 44% new oak, 8 amphoras (around 10% of overall), the rest in one year old barrel, 45hl/h yield. Great stuff.

The 2022 Berliquet, 65% Merlot and 35% Cabernet Franc with a yield of 45 hl/ha, is aging in 44% new oak barrels. Deep garnet-purple in color, it flies out of the glass with notes of lilacs, red roses, and Sichuan pepper, leading to a core of redcurrant jelly, black raspberries, and wild blueberries plus a waft of truffles. The full-bodied palate is rich and opulent, with loads of bright red berry sparks and a lively backbone, finishing on a lingering mineral note. pH 3.55.

Candied cherries, tapenade, violets, and floral notes all emerge from the 2022 Château Berliquet, a medium to full-bodied, seamless Saint-Emilion that brings plenty of ripeness while staying nicely balanced, light on its feet, and elegant. Based on 65% Merlot and 35% Cabernet Franc, from yields of 31.2 hectoliter per hectare, it will spend 16 months in 44% new French oak, with a portion of the blend aged in amphora. This isn't the most powerful or opulent wine in the vintage, but it's as seamless and graceful as they come.

The 2022 Berliquet is super-concentrated, dark and ripe, but also without the forbidding tannins of the past. Succulent plum fruit, mocha, licorice and dried herbs are some of the many notes that grace this gorgeous Saint-Émilion. It will be interesting to see where the 2022 ends up post élevage. Today it is full-bodied and quite opulent. Tasted four times. Drinking window : 2028-2042

Flowers, crushed stones, espresso, and red pit fruits create the nose. On the palate, the wine is expressive, silky, long, and deep, with intensity, purity and elegance, finishing with salty-chocolate, black, red and white cherries, plums and a dash of cocoa. The wine leaves you with refined, soft, polished edge in the finish. The wine blends 65% Merlot with 35% Cabernet Franc, 14.5% ABV, 3.55 pH. Drink from 2026-2048.

The 2022 Berliquet is brilliant, bursting with aromas of plums, wild berries and lilac, followed by a medium to full-bodied, concentrated and vibrant palate that's deep and mineral. It's likely to be another of the vintage's more attractive en primeur proportions. This estate just goes from strength to strength—and that's before its new winery has been constructed! One of the most significant changes has been opting to retain higher canopies, which means that the fruiting zone of rows planted along the slope are now shaded, preserving freshness.

Lots of dark and crushed stones with blackberries and black olives. Dark earth. Full-bodied and more concentrated with very intense fruit and chewy tannins. Velvety and slightly rough, but all there.
