Berliquet - Saint-Emilion Grand Cru 2021

Château Berliquet, a hanging garden

Château Berliquet, Grand Cru Classé owned by CHANEL since 2017, is located on the heights of Saint-Emilion. Here, it is the landscape that catches the eye. As a true haven of greenery, Berliquet's garden is an open-air cabinet of curiosities where vines and plant species find their balance. Plants and vines thrive and teach the winegrower about the terroir of this hanging garden.

Unchanged for nearly 200 years, the 10ha large vineyard plunges towards the Dordogne. From the limestone plateau to the bottom of the hill, the sections of soils of different compositions can clearly be seen. At the top, the limestone pavement, and then, moving further down, more clay is present. At Berliquet, a lot of work is done by hand or using animal traction, with respect for living things and for the landscape. Here, the Merlots and Cabernet Francs are rooted and pampered.

The wine of Berliquet reflects this very special atmosphere. It expresses the tension of the limestone and the power of the clays. There is a soul to talk about and to share, there is a wine of elegance and of character. Château Berliquet reveals its personality, airy like that of its neighbour Château Canon, but also earthy, with its own clay imprint

Tasting notes

2021 is a rich, generous and yet precisely-delineated vintage. The first nose is predominantly floral, with added complexity courtesy of the intense geranium notes, right down to the earthy roots. They soon make way for crushed red fruit aromas, with blackberry and cherry front and centre, charming the palate with their sheer generosity. The depth of character drawn from the clay-rich soils is tempered by a pin-sharp sense of tension and finesse. A high-wire balancing act, showcasing this vintage at its best.

The 2021 Château Berliquet is another red-fruited, vibrant, floral effort in the vintage that offers medium-bodied richness and depth, as well as beautiful balance. A blend of 61% Merlot and 39% Cabernet Franc that saw malolactic fermentation in barrel and is still resting in 44% new oak, it has bright acidity, silky tannins, and just an incredible sense of purity and elegance. Managed today by the team of Nicolas Audebert, the quality here is on an upward trajectory, and this is an estate readers need to have on their radar. Thomas Duclos also consults here. Tasted three times.

The 2021 Berliquet is every bit as impressive as it was en primeur. A wine of substance and depth, the 2021 possesses notable complexity and limestone-driven intensity. As always, Berliquet is a bit chunky in feel, but the team here, led by Nicolas Berliquet, is doing important work in taming the tannins and giving the wine greater finesse. The direction here is quite positive. The 2021 has been impressive each of the three times I have tasted it so far.

The 2021 Berliquet is showing very well in bottle, wafting from the glass with notes of sweet wild berries, plums and rose petals, framed by subtle hints of licorice and vanilla pod. Medium to full-bodied, fleshy and seamless, it's suave and sensual, with a fleshy core of fruit, ultra-refined tannins and a pure, perfumed, mineral finish. This seamless, charming Saint-Émilion will offer a broad drinking window.

Fragrant nose of cloves, dark berry fruit, orange zest and dried flowers. It’s bright, precise and crunchy, with a medium body, firm yet fine-grained tannins and a zesty, long finish. Drink from 2025.

Light, but fresh and balanced, with red cherry and currant coulis notes dotted with cedar and savory accents through the focused finish. Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Drink now through 2026.  –JM

Softly spoken, carefully extracted, well-layered raspberry, damson and red cherry fruits, a subtle complexity that grows through the palate, with clear finesse, smoked earth and grilled cedar on the finish. First year of organic conversion, with certification expected 2024. 44% new oak, plus four amphora for ageing. 30hl/h yield, 3.41ph. Thomas Duclos consultant.

There is more volume of fruit here than expected, but it is rather crunched and ruffled, and the tannins fall onto the palate in a heap. The fruit flavours are certainly enticing, and the oak is not over the top, but the palate is my leading cause of concern, and it needs to iron out and gather some silkiness soon. The limestone element is currently sticking out, and while it will need to hang onto this part because it is the energy pack, it needs to give the fruit from the plateau section a chance to mellow and evolve. Until all three sections, limestone, sand, and plateau, are all in harmony, you should not open a bottle. Time will tell, and I am an optimist, so I will back this wine with a decent score and a pair of crossed fingers. 17.5+

Rather firm and muscular tannins frame the wine. Medium-to full-bodied with a column of fruit and density. Shows potential. Earth and spice at the end.

Berliquet 2021 has a sort of invisible power. Compared to the “restrained wild horse” presented in the 2020 vintage, I consider the vintage of 2021 is softer and more elegant. The chalky texture covering the taste buds is no less than that of Canon from a pure limestone plateau. And the clay soil on the slope skillfully strengthens the tannins, making this wine a refined masterpiece from inside out. 2021???Berliquet???????????2020??“??????”??,???????????????????????????????????????????Canon?,???????????????????,???????????

Earthy plums, cherries, flowers, and a touch of menthol form the nose. On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied, soft, bright, silky and fresh, with sweet, ripe, red fruits in the, refined finish. The wine blends 61 % Merlot with 39 % Cabernet Franc 13.5% ABV. The harvest took place September 23 - October 5. Drink from 2023-2038. 91-93

An attractive bright purple colour with violet rim, and warming fruit aromatics, touches of cloves. This is impressive, with a lovely sense of lift and freshness, and beautifully placed raspberry, blackberry and redcurrant fruits. A little bulkier than its sibling estate Canon, slightly more angular tannins in this vintage, but still with the juicy fingerprint of limestone. First year of organic conversion, with certification expected 2024. 44% new oak, plus four amphora. 30hl/h yield, 3.41ph. Clay-limestone plateau, next to Canon but with slightly cooler, more powerful soils. Tasted twice.

The 2021 Berliquet was picked September 23 to October 5 at 30hL/ha, and matured in 44% new oak for a planned 16 months. Limpid purple in color. The nose is surprisingly concentrated given the growing season, offering crème de cassis and violet petal aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with quite firm tannins that frame the black cherry and boysenberry fruit. Not a complex Berliquet, yet it possesses admirable substance and ripeness on the finish. One to watch.

The 2021 Berliquet is the best wine the new team led by Technical Director Nicolas Audebert has made since taking over the property a few years ago. The purity of the fruit is striking. Red cherry, plum, lavender, rose petal and spice lend nuance throughout. Despite the obviously challenging growing season, the Berliquet team turned out a very pretty wine. Impressive. Tasted three times.

The 2021 Berliquet shows considerable promise, exhibiting aromas of cherries, wild berries, raw cocoa and rose petals, followed by a medium to full-bodied, lively and charming palate that's framed by powdery tannins and tangy acids. Concluding with a long and saline finish, this estate continues to go from strength to strength under the administration of Nicolas Audibert and his team.
