Berliquet (BIO-ORGANIC) - Saint-Emilion Grand Cru 2024

Château Berliquet, a hanging garden

Château Berliquet, Grand Cru Classé owned by CHANEL since 2017, is located on the heights of Saint-Emilion. Here, it is the landscape that catches the eye. As a true haven of greenery, Berliquet's garden is an open-air cabinet of curiosities where vines and plant species find their balance. Plants and vines thrive and teach the winegrower about the terroir of this hanging garden.

Unchanged for nearly 200 years, the 10ha large vineyard plunges towards the Dordogne. From the limestone plateau to the bottom of the hill, the sections of soils of different compositions can clearly be seen. At the top, the limestone pavement, and then, moving further down, more clay is present. At Berliquet, a lot of work is done by hand or using animal traction, with respect for living things and for the landscape. Here, the Merlots and Cabernet Francs are rooted and pampered.

The wine is a true reflection of its distinctive atmosphere.
It expresses the tension of limestone and the strength of clay. Château Berliquet reveals a personality that is both airy—like its neighbor, Château Canon—and grounded, marked by a clay signature that is uniquely its own.

The 2024 Vintage

Climatic conditions:

The year was marked by contrasting weather patterns. Winter was mild and rainy, encouraging early growth in the vines. In spring, temperatures dropped noticeably from mid-April onwards, with frequent rainfall slowing vine development. It wasn’t until the end of July that true summer weather set in, bringing warmth and sunshine. Autumn turned out to be cool and wet, requiring careful attention during the harvest.

Tasting notes:

First, a deep impression — plum, intense cocoa with its bitterness. Then come the spices, almost Rhône-like. Against a dark green backdrop, fig turns pastry-like — with a grainy texture and sweet flavor. There’s freshness too: a hint of pomegranate juice, a breeze through rosemary. A vintage of great poise and character, combining concentration with brilliance.

Juicy and fresh with a fun aspect straight away - gorgeous lift and just generous acidity which gives this a happy expression. It’s not heavy of course, it’s lightweight but so pure and focussed with a real sense of brightness and almost sweetness with blueberry, cranberry and raspberry flavours alongside orange rind and some chalkiness. Great purity. Dangerously drinkable. A tremendous effort that shows the vineyard work and precision viticulture is paying off. Ageing 37% new barrels, 22% amphorae for 16 to 18 months. 3.37pH. First year of organics. A yield of 42hl/ha.

Deep garnet-purple colored. Erupts from the glass with energetic notes of kirsch, red currant jelly, and strawberry preserves, opening out to reveal underlying nuances of violets, pencil shavings, and wild thyme. The medium-bodied palate delivers great intensity and tension with vibrant red berry and savory layers supported by fine-grained tannins, finishing long and perfumed. Seriously good!

The 2024 Château Berliquet comes from slightly more clay soils compared to its stablemate, Canon, and is always a bigger, richer wine. Darker black cherries, tobacco, scorched earth, and hints of chocolate all emerge from this incredibly successful 2024. It's medium-bodied, has plenty of mid-palate depth, ripe tannins, and outstanding length. The blend is 60% Merlot, 39% Cabernet Franc, and 1% Malbec, all of which will spend 16-18 months in 37% new barrels and 22% in amphora, from 43 hectoliters per hectare, hitting 13.5% alcohol with a pH of 3.37.

Impressive. Creamy, full and quite rich and highly expressive aromatically with lovely iris and violet florality alongside the dark stone and berry fruits. Cassis with aeration. The creaminess is even more evident when tasted alongside Canon at the property. It’s subtle at first and a little introvert. It’s as if it needs the time to prepare us for the gorgeous, but again cool and subtle, intensity over a narrow frame of the palate. Incense and candlewax. Not a colossus at all, but delightfully lifted and crystalline. I like this a lot, above all those tactile, pixilating calcaire tannins.

A fresh and vivid wine with sliced lemons, lemongrass, pine needles and some red cherries. Medium-bodied with fine tannins and a tangy finish. Attractive energy to this. Nice depth. 60% merlot, 39% cabernet franc and 1% mablec.

The 2024 Berliquet was picked from 20 September to 3 October at 43 hl/ha and aged in 37% new oak, 22% amphoras. This has a much more oyster-tinged, black olive-scented bouquet that distinguishes it from the 2024 Canon. It's quite intense in style. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins, although I find them not as chiseled as the Canon's. It has good weight and substance on the finish in the context of the season, but this will require two or three years in bottle and should then drink well for fifteen to twenty more.

The 2024 Berliquet is delicate and understated, in the style of the year. Floral aromatics accent a core of blue-toned fruit, new leather, licorice and dark spice. The 2024 is classy, elegant and polished from start to finish. The most important signature of the 2024 is a palpable refinement in the tannin profile, even in a challenging vintage. This is an intriguing and highly promising wine from a château that is still finding its way. Tasted four times.

Quite floral and fruity in the perfume, the wine displays its classic, limestone character that allows the refined cherries and red fruits to shine. Elegant, vibrant, and with soft, polished textures, the wine finishes with its silky, stylings, and sense of purity to the fruits on the palate and in the minty, tobacco-tinted finish. The wine blends 59% Merlot, with 40% Cabernet Franc, and 1% Malbec. 13.5% ABV. Drink from 2028-2044.

Had it been five years ago, Château Berliquet might not have faced such a rainy vintage with the same composure. But now, that clay-rich terroir has shed its former restlessness and settled into a quiet, unhurried grace. The 2024 vintage brings a softer body, which in turn allows the purity of the 39% Cabernet Franc to shine through with clarity. A peony, barely in bloom, stirs the heart and gently awakens the typically reserved Merlot of this vintage. In the midst of a steadfast commitment to organic farming, the estate achieved an impressive yield of 43 hl/ha. It is a quiet triumph that speaks volumes of the team’s tireless dedication across countless days and nights.

Unwinding in the glass with brooding aromas of cassis, raspberries, rose petals, violets and pencil shavings, the 2024 Berliquet is medium to full-bodied, polished and muscular, with broad shoulders and a dense, chalky core. It's a blend of 60% Merlot, 39% Cabernet Franc and (a new addition) 1% Malbec. This estate continues to stand out next to is stablemate, Canon, for its more powerful style and darker fruit profile.

Anis, fennel straight on the nose, this has a gourmet, earthy quality with beautiful freshness, showing blueberry, raspberry and red cherry fruits, mandarin peel, bitter aniseed and chalk edge on the finish. 42hl/ha yield, organic certified. 3.37 pH. Yield 43 hl/ha. 37% new oak, 22% amphoras. Harvest 20 September to 3 October. 100% of production (after selection) is here, nothing gone to bulk. First year of Malbec added into the blend here (just 1%).

Dark ruby, purple reflections, subtle brightening on the rim. Delicate red berry bouquet, a hint of sweet cherries, nuances of figs, soft notes of rose petals. Slender, fine cherry fruit, pleasant acidity, balanced, already developed and approachable.
