Bellevue Mondotte - Saint-Emilion Grand Cru 2019

Geological characteristics
A partial enclave of Château Pavie Decesse on the Saint-Émilion clay-limestone plateau, the terroir is located 80m above the Dordogne valley. Bellevue Mondotte’s terroir combines : meagre soil, southfacing sun exposure, excellent natural drainage thanks to its hillside location. A great vineyard !

Growing methods
Green harvesting, with a first leaf-stripping operation on the sunrise side of the rows in late June, and a second one on the sunset side in mid August.

Vinification
Grapes hand-picked then sorted. Alcoholic fermentation started up naturally in temperature-controlled wooden vats. 35 days maceration. Malolactic fermentation in barrels.

Maturing
In 70 % new oak and 30 % one-wine wooden barrels.
Final blending at bottling time.

Bellevue-Mondotte is possibly the most mineral-rich wine in the 2019 vintage. Thanks to the clay soil beneath the limestone, this wine has a steel-like structure from start to finish, allowing it to penetrate the taste buds once it touches my palate. The aroma is firm and constricted, after swirling the glass, the scents of sour jujube, cherries and crisp black plums emerge. The toasted tannins of oak barrels and the natural tannins of grapes fit perfectly, giving the finish an unparalleled sense of depth. It takes years to age before savoring. This is dense and layered, but with very fine, creamy tannins. Weightless and punchy from the bright acidity. Vivid and long. Tight at the end, but then kicks off with minerality and stone. 90% merlot, 5% cabernet franc and 5% cabernet sauvignon. Try after 2025.

More seamless and elegant than the more powerful, structured Pavie Decesse (these all emerge from the Perse team), the Merlot-dominated 2019 Bellevue Mondotte just about jumps out of the glass with its ripe, spicy red, blue, and black fruits as well as spring flowers, graphite, chalky mineral, and violet-like aromas and flavors. Almost Pomerol-like with its seamless, polished tannins and gorgeous mouthfeel, it's flawlessly balanced, has a deep, layered mid-palate, and a great, great finish. This stunning Saint-Emilion will benefit from just 4-6 years of bottle age and cruise for 30+ years in cold cellars.

The 2019 Bellevue Mondotte is another rich, muscular wine from the Perse family. Exhibiting aromas of ripe cherries, berry fruit liqueur, warm spices, paraffin wax and creamy new oak, it's full-bodied, thick and broad-shouldered, with a super ripe and generously extracted profile, lively acids and a long, heady, youthfully chewy finish where ripe but assertive tannins make their presence felt. From holdings on Saint-Émilion's plateau, opposite Stephan von Neipperg’s La Mondotte, this is another wine where I think more finesse wouldn't have to come at the expense of concentration or intensity; but it will delight drinkers who look back at the extremely powerful Saint-Émilions of the 2000s with nostalgia, as it remains faithful to that pedal-to-the-metal style.

The 2019 Bellevue Mondotte is dense and potent, just as it was in barrel. An exotic mélange of inky dark fruit, chocolate, lavender, licorice, menthol and espresso fills out nicely. The tannins are intense - as they are in all these wines - and yet there is enough stuffing for the balance to work. Give this powerhouse Saint-Émilion a few years to soften.

The 2019 Bellevue Mondotte, picked at 18hL/ha on a single day (October 5) has a tightly wound bouquet of blackberry, briary, blueberry and light violet petal scents, but less of the marine aromas that I picked out from the barrel sample. However, there are some lovely orange pith scents that percolate through with continued aeration, and these are accentuated after a couple of hours. The palate is medium-bodied with gentle grip, good acidity and fine backbone. This is quite a sturdy Saint-Émilion with impressive density toward the finish. It needs just a little more charm and personality, though they may develop with time. Very fine, but patience required.

The 2019 Bellevue Mondotte is a blend of 90% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon, harvested on the 5th of October. The yields this year were 18 hectoliters per hectare, and the alcohol came in at 14.81%, while the pH was 3.50 (remarkably low!). Very deep garnet-purple colored, it comes bounding out of the glass with exuberant black cherry preserves, blueberry compote and boysenberries scents plus hints of wilted roses, cumin seed, aniseed and cardamom. Full-bodied, the palate has fantastically ripe, silky tannins and gorgeous freshness supporting all that perfumed black and blue fruit, finishing long and harmonious.

The 2019 Bellevue Mondotte is a powerful, tightly wound Saint-Émilion. Dark red cherry, dried flowers, licorice and mint all meld together in the glass. Next to the other wines in the Perse range, Bellevue Mondotte comes across as less showy, with tons of persistence that makes up for its reticence. Red fruit, pomegranate and blood orange infuse the finish with superb density. I can't help thinking that I caught the 2019 at a slightly awkward stage.

95-97+ Showing the vintage beautifully, the Merlot-dominated 2019 Bellevue Mondotte has tons of beautiful cassis and blueberry fruits giving way to more floral, graphite, and mineral aromatics with time in the glass. A rich, powerful, full-bodied expression from this terroir, it still shows the vintage’s purity and elegance. It needs to be forgotten for 7-8 years and enjoyed over the following 30+ years.

The 2019 Bellevue Mondotte was picked on 5 October at just 18hl/ha. Deep purple in colour, it has a delineated, focused bouquet with ample blackberries, bilberry, crushed stone and subtle marine aromas filtering through. The new oak is neatly integrated. The palate is medium-bodied with supple ripe tannins, well judged acidity, fleshy on the mid-palate with a caressing finish that I find less aggressive than previous vintages (much like stablemate Clos Lunelles). This has great potential.

Dark, with purple accents, but not quite opaque, the wine is full-bodied, rich, deep and intense. There is power, length and purity, yet nothing is too much, everything is working in balance here. The fruit is dark, the tannins and polished finish really stick for close to 50 seconds. 95-97 Pts

The purity of fruit is impressive here with crushed blackberries, blueberries and dark chocolate with some coffee. It's full-bodied, yet integrated and chewy. Rich finish.
