Beaux Frères Vineyard, Belles Sœurs - Ribbon Ridge AVA 2019

Beaux Frères, nestled in Willamette Valley, has played a pioneering and leading role in Oregon's rise to world recognition for pinot noir based great wines.

In 2017, the Henriot family, of the namesake Champagne house, Bouchard Père et Fils in Burgundy, and William Fèvre in Chablis, acquired a majority share of Beaux Frères, with the founders, the Etzel family, remaining as managing partners.

Since its first vintage in 1991, the Beaux Frères philosophy remains the same: to produce world-class wine from small, well-balanced yields and ripe, healthy fruit that represents the essence of our vineyards. The human element of our efforts – coupled with the whimsy of Mother Nature as our muse – make Beaux Frères wines distinct. Our operation is low on technology, high on personality. Low on analytics, high on intuition.

The Belles Sœurs is a hand-selected barrel reserve from the three estate vineyards. This thoughtfully crafted wine showcases the elegance and finesse of each site. The Belles Sœurs is equal in quality to the Beaux Freres Vineyard Pinot Noir, but differs stylistically. The Beaux Freres vineyard remains the flagship of the portfolio, with the Belles Sœurs now keeping stride as its whimsical counterpart.

2019 vintage

“The 2019 vintage was the first in six years to truly test the chops of Oregon’s Willamette Valley winemakers. The kind of weather we saw around harvest made for a classical cool-climate growing season, and the wines that are emerging are showcasing the kind of complexity and finesse that can only be drawn from adversity. I’m so excited about this vintage and these wines.” Mikey D. Etzel, Winemaker

A wine that uncoils patiently, with cherry and blueberry flavors laced with dusky spice, gathering speed and tension toward stony yet polished tannins. Drink now through 2030.

This is the first time Beaux Frères has been released on La Place, and this is the perfect wine to announce its arrival on this famous stage.  Refined and silky, yet with a refreshing amount of grip, the red fruit might seem a little tender and demure, but there is enough tension here to bring gravitas and drama, and it will stay on this path for a decade or more.

From its origin as a Shea Vineyard bottling, Belle Soeur has transitioned to a blend fruit from the Beaux Freres, Upper Terrace, and Sequitur, all farmed by Mike Etzel. Today the grapes are picked earlier, and the extraction managed more gently to give a classic red fruit nose with spice on the attack and plenty of freshness and grippy tannins on the palate. There is still plenty of extract, though, and this lingers persistently on the finish.

Aromas of dark cherry, plum, violet, smoke and cigar box. Medium-bodied with finely grained tannins and bright acidity. Balanced and refined. Harmonious, savory and silky with a succulent, long finish. A little tight now. Unfiltered. Try after 2023

Vivid ruby. Expansive red and blue fruit aromas show fine definition, complemented by succulent floral, exotic spices and mineral notes that build with air. Sappy, appealingly sweet and energetic in style, offering boysenberry, Chambord, candied rose and five-spice powder flavors braced by a spine of juicy acidity. The floral note repeats emphatically on the impressively long finish, which features polished tannins and reverberating red fruit character.

Medium ruby-purple, the 2019 Pinot Noir The Belles Soeurs has alluring wild red and black berry fruits with wafts of garrigue, Earl Grey tea leaves and Angostura bitters. The palate is silky and intense with layered, graphite-tinged fruit and a very long finish that's notable for its purity and persistent perfume.
