L'Aventure - Optimus - Paso Robles 2022

L'Aventure Winery: world-renowned blends at Paso Robles

Stephan Asseo, owner and winemaker at L’Aventure Winery, began making wine in 1982. He and his family later purchased Chateau Fleur Cardinal and Chateau Robin in the Cotes de Castillion in Bordeaux. Over the next 15 years, Stephan developed into an artisan winemaker of fastidious craftsmanship and gained a “maverick” reputation. His true desire was to be more innovative than AOC law would allow. In 1996, this led him, and his family, on a journey to pursue his ideal as a winemaker. In 1997, after one year of research, they fell in love with a unique terroir in the west side Paso Robles. And L’Aventure began in 1998!

Optimus is the perfect introduction to L'Aventure's lineup. Also known as their “crazy” Paso blend, Optimus is beautifully balanced with a lot of freshness. This wine is approachable young but can be enjoyed for up to a decade.

The 2022 Vintage

2022 harvest presented the most challenges. August 31st was the first day of a 40°C+ heatwave which continued consistently for a full 10 days, a first in our history.

The Syrah at that stage was close to being perfectly ripe, so we decided to pick a little bit earlier to avoid the consequences of this long period of heat. As a result, we harvested some beautiful Syrah that came out without any damage. The Cabernet, on the contrary, was not ripe and could not be harvested early so we had to wait and sacrifice a lot of yield in the process. When it was finally time to pick, half of the crop was dry. Which led to extensive sorting with our optical sorter. This heat affected the entire region, and many wineries were scrambling to find crews to pick on a moment’s notice. It’s important to shed some light on our dedicated and loyal vineyard crew that has worked with us for the past 20 years. With their help, we were able to pick when needed and to adapt to the weather conditions by incorporating night picking. On top of that, we were fortunate to have space, large numbers of tanks available, and our “Ferrari” of an optical sorter.

At the end of the day, given the numerous obstacles, we came out exhausted but hopeful. Stephan’s winemaking philosophy has always been to make wines that are representative of the vintage and our terroir. This vintage was the perfect example to put Stephan’s philosophy to the test. The Rhone varieties (Syrah, Mourvèdre and Grenache) resisted the heat and did well despite the challenges. For the Cabernet, we decided to focus on the pleasure, balance, and fresh fruit. Ironically, this vintage is showing more as a cool climate vintage, meaning still powerful and ripe, but also with freshness, balance and complexity.

(Paso Robles, Willow Creek District; 66% Syrah; 26% Cabernet Sauvignon; 9% Petit Verdot; 36% in Y1; 14.6% alcohol; tasted with Swann Dufeu from L’Aventure at CVBG; 1998 was the first vintage here and, since 2008, all the fruit is estate grown). This is defined aromatically by the Syrah. Pure, precise, pixilated and with a pleasing crisp brightness to the raspberry and loganberry fruit. Crushed black pepper. Quite lifted and yet gracious too. Fresh, juicy and quite vivid. More and more defined by the Bordeaux varietals as the wine inhales. Plump, plush and crystalline at first before the grippy, grainy tannins start to engage. Minty and increasingly herbal on the finish which is sapid and juicy. There’s just a hint of dryness right at the very end. An impressive result.

This full-bodied Syrah-dominant red blend from Stephan Asseo’s L’Aventure features a dark-fruited, spice-filled nose and a hint of savoury, meaty notes. The palate showcases a contrast of bright red fruits and freshly cracked black pepper. A strong acid backbone and assertive tannins highlight the balanced structure. It is ready to drink now, though it will not be released until September 2025.

Black olive tapenade on the nose, quite savoury with dark black fruit aromas, some vanilla and chocolate elements too. Smooth and silky with amazingly high acidity that you don't expect from the aromatic display. Lively and clean, tongue scraping with a long length of almost tart strawberry and wet stones. Biting acidity with tons of mint and minerality. Mouthwatering but not too much, a little clipped on the finish but more due to tension I think at this point. A cooler climate feel to this, definitely not jammy, it has concentration but a fresh aspect to the fruit with pronounced acidity and minerality. Clean and focussed. Something very drinkable to this. Ageing 18 months; 81% in one year old French oak, 19% new with malolactic fermentation in barrels.

A delicious, juicy, fruit-driven wine with a ton of chocolate and liquorice alongside the supple tannins. Lower alcohol than past few years, despite this being a heatwave vintage, but this is still a Californian hug. Small yields, around 30% down, 32ha of land in Paso Robles (up from 25ha), Chloe Asseo director, Stephan Asseo owner and winemaker, from the Willow Creek district of Paso Robles.

The 2022 Optimus checks in as 66% Syrah, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 9% Petit Verdot. This deep ruby/purple-hued effort offers a terrific nose of ripe blackberries, peppery herbs, violets, and game to go with a full-bodied, concentrated, vet beautifully balanced style on the palate. I love its tannins, it has soft, supple mouthfeel, and a great finish. It’s already drinking beautiful and will evolve nicely for 8-10 years.

Lifted and perfumed nose with aromas of bramble berries, cedar and mocha. The palate is full-bodied with finely integrated tannins and fresh acidity, showing notes of blackcurrants, tobacco leaves and graphite. Very well constructed and balanced. A blend of 66% Syrah, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon and 9% Petit Verdot. Drink or hold.

The 2022 Optimus is 66% Syrah, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon and 9% Petit Verdot aged in 19% new French oak. The nose displays a combination of ripe, seductive dark fruits with a pointed, menthol-like sharpness, giving off aromas of pine sap, green peppercorns and incense. The palate is medium-bodied but quite sappy and concentrated, transitioning to a hard finish that calls back the astringent notes found in the nose.

A deep purple hue, the 2022 Optimus opens in the glass with a whiff of savory herbs, licorice and cocoa powder accentuating dried black cherries. This is luscious and round with fleshy wild berry fruits and sweet spices that swirl throughout. Zesty acidity enlivens the experience, as a subtle note of fine tannins adds form, tapering off with length yet only lightly structured. I love the energy here.
