L'Aventure - Cote à Cote - Paso Robles 2022

L'Aventure Winery: world-renowned blends at Paso Robles

Stephan Asseo, owner and winemaker at L’Aventure Winery, began making wine in 1982. He and his family later purchased Chateau Fleur Cardinal and Chateau Robin in the Cotes de Castillion in Bordeaux. Over the next 15 years, Stephan developed into an artisan winemaker of fastidious craftsmanship and gained a “maverick” reputation. His true desire was to be more innovative than AOC law would allow. In 1996, this led him, and his family, on a journey to pursue his ideal as a winemaker. In 1997, after one year of research, they fell in love with a unique terroir in the west side Paso Robles. And L’Aventure began in 1998!

Côte à Côte – an homage to the Southern Rhône

Côte à Côte is made of Grenache Syrah and Mourvèdre paying homage to the Southern Rhône while embracing the unique character of Paso Robles. This wine is seductive, fruit-forward, and offers a lot of pleasure.

The 2022 Vintage

2022 harvest presented the most challenges. August 31st was the first day of a 40°C+ heatwave which continued consistently for a full 10 days, a first in our history.

The Syrah at that stage was close to being perfectly ripe, so we decided to pick a little bit earlier to avoid the consequences of this long period of heat. As a result, we harvested some beautiful Syrah that came out without any damage. The Cabernet, on the contrary, was not ripe and could not be harvested early so we had to wait and sacrifice a lot of yield in the process. When it was finally time to pick, half of the crop was dry. Which led to extensive sorting with our optical sorter. This heat affected the entire region, and many wineries were scrambling to find crews to pick on a moment’s notice. It’s important to shed some light on our dedicated and loyal vineyard crew that has worked with us for the past 20 years. With their help, we were able to pick when needed and to adapt to the weather conditions by incorporating night picking. On top of that, we were fortunate to have space, large numbers of tanks available, and our “Ferrari” of an optical sorter.

At the end of the day, given the numerous obstacles, we came out exhausted but hopeful. Stephan’s winemaking philosophy has always been to make wines that are representative of the vintage and our terroir. This vintage was the perfect example to put Stephan’s philosophy to the test. The Rhone varieties (Syrah, Mourvèdre and Grenache) resisted the heat and did well despite the challenges. For the Cabernet, we decided to focus on the pleasure, balance, and fresh fruit. Ironically, this vintage is showing more as a cool climate vintage, meaning still powerful and ripe, but also with freshness, balance and complexity. In 2022, for the first time, the blend includes white grapes such as Viognier.

(Paso Robles, Willow Creek District; 34% Grenache; 31% Syrah; 30% Mourvedre; 3% Graciano; 2% Viognier; 18 months aged in new and Y1 oak, concrete and amphora; 14.9% alcohol; tasted with Swann Dufeu from L’Aventure at CVBG; aged in amphora, concrete, new and one-year old French old barrels). Very Côte Rôtie in a way; but also very Châteauneuf du Pape – I hesitate between the two, or is it that the wine switches between the two? Janasse meets Jamet in Paso Robles! Raspberry; a little blackberry too; black pepper; a little plum skin. Plump, plush, yet impressively gracious for a vintage like this. Robust but refined. There’s a touch of dryness to the tannins, but at its core this is impressively glassy in texture. 96.

Extremely floral on the nose, so perfumed and lively. Very expressive and open. Roses, iris, peony with black cherry and plum notes. Seductive and spiced, so smooth and juicy, this really is effortless. Lots of cherry, baked strawberry, blackcurrant and cooling blueberry fruit. Crystalline and pure, this is gorgeous, sapid and mouthwatering but elongated vertically where there’s layers of freshness, fruit and minerality. Some spiced and herbal aspects too. I love this, really excellent and so easy to like. Refined, plenty of character and confidence. Ends lifted and so long, really leaves a moreish aspect. Ageing 18 months; 33 one year old barrels, 33 new French oak, 19% amphora, 13% concrete with malolactic fermentation in barrels. No fining or filtering. 3% Graciano and 2% Viognier - the first time the blend includes white grapes - complete the mix.

This is a lovely wine, with character and intensity. Bitter chocolate, blueberry, coffee, raspberry, sleek and powerful. Unfiltered and unfined. 33% new French oak for ageing, 19% amphora (moved away from entirely oak in 2015), Chloe Asseo director, Stephan Asseo owner and winemaker, from the Willow Creek district of Paso Robles.

A spicy and earth-driven nose with aromas of dark cherries, tobacco leaves and cassia bark. The palate is full-bodied with finely integrated tannins and bright acidity, showing complex notes of mulberries, graphite, blood plums and herbs de Provence. 34% Grenache, 31% Syrah, 30% Mourvèdre, 3% Graciano and 2% Viognier. Will age and soften over time. Drinkable now, but best from 2028.

The 2022 Côte a Côte is 34% Grenache, 31% Syrah, 30% Mourvèdre, 3% Graciano and 2% Viognier aged in a mixture of new and one-year-old French oak, amphora and concrete. The nose is a pleasing combination of herbal, savory and plush, with bramble, black cherry, lavender and anise aromas. The texture is svelte, polished and concentrated, yet it leads to a hard-edged finish driven by a rugged structure of stems and edgy oak tannins. This needs softening and integration and would be best left in the cellar for a few years after release.

A fruit-forward nose of rich, ripe blueberries and blackberries. The palate follows with rich dark chocolate and blueberry compote notes, plus the same rich, ripe fruits as on the nose. While the tannins are slightly astringent, they are well-integrated—a lengthy, satisfying finish. Though set for release in September 2025, this wine is already drinking quite well and has a long life ahead.

The 2022 Côte a Côte is a savory beast, mixing New World fruit with Old World flair, as notes of crushed stone, underbrush, olive and dark chocolate complicate dried blueberries. This is seamlessly silky with juicy acidity and an opulent core of wild berry fruit while maintaining fantastic harmony throughout. A tinge of blood orange adds to the 2022s energetic personality as hints of tart blackberry mingle with sweet tannins, creating a lovely framework. The Côte a Côte is a perfectly balanced blend of 34% Grenache, 31% Syrah, 30% Mourvèdre, 3% Graciano and 2% Viognier.

The 2022 Cote A Cote is another wine I was able to taste from barrel, and it shows the ripe, supple, open-knit style of the vintage while staying balanced and complex. Wild strawberries, blue fruits, peppery spice, and graphite notes define the bouquet, and this beauty is medium to full-bodied, has fine grained, silky tannins, terrific balance, and outstanding length.
