Arômes de Pavie - Saint-Emilion Grand Cru 2022

Perse Latitudes

After a first career in the retail industry, Gérard Perse decided in the 1990s to fulfill his passion for vineyards and wine. His future would be written in Saint-Emilion, his land of choice. He acquired, among others, Château Pavie, a premier grand cru classé 'A' of Saint-Emilion, Monbousquet, a classified grand cru of Saint-Emilion, and later Clos Lunelles in Castillon, Côtes de Bordeaux.

Wine is a product that can be enhanced both by its origin and the dishes associated with it. Thus the Perse Family acquired the Hostellerie de Plaisance, a renowned place of gastronomy and lifestyle, which later became Hôtel de Pavie along with its double Michelin-starred restaurant, La Table de Pavie. The collaboration since 2020 with Yannick Alléno, a true icon of French gastronomy, embodies the new dynamics and ambition embraced by the family.

Arômes de Pavie, the expression of a terroir

The second wine of Château Pavie comes from parcels dedicated exclusively to its production. It benefits from the expertise and know-how of the same teams and, as for the first wine, the quest for excellence guides every actions. Following these principles, the vineyard has evolved over the years towards the greatest terroirs and is now located on the limestone plateau of Saint-Emilion, at 85m from the level of the Dordogne. With the same signature as its elder brother, the wine is characterized by its charm and elegance, associated with a beautiful freshness.

The 2022 Vintage - Gérard Perse's 25th Harvest at Château Pavie

The 2022 vintage shines with a special radiance for the Perse family and its teams. For this iconic vintage, carrying so many memories, emotions, and milestones achieved, the weather has been pleasantly accomplice: an endless summer and dream-like harvests that allow for the collection of small, concentrated berries of high quality and beautiful balance. In the cellar, vibrant juices with the taste of ripe and fresh fruits promise a historic vintage.

The 2022 vintage of Arômes de Pavie sparks a “century duel” between 50% Merlot and 50% Cabernet Franc, masterfully blending richness with fluidity, juiciness with sweetness, and achieving perfect balance within its rounded character. Roasted notes intertwine with blueberry and mulberry aromas, offering not only a full-bodied structure but also densely textured and refined tannins. Most striking is the persistent violet fragrance that infuses the wine with an elegance rarely seen in such a hot and dry vintage, allowing its beauty to shine even in its youth.

A dedicated plot of vines on the plateau set aside for this wine to ensure the DNA. Still tight, lots of density and a smoky grilled character. This was opened two hours before tasting and yet needs a good 30 minutes in the glass to show its mandarin peel, blueberry, cassis and blood orange nuance. Umami soy and broth hints, this is textured and good quality. Give a few years in bottle to soften. Perse family owners, 50% new oak for ageing.

An even split of Cabernet Franc and Merlot, the 2022 Aromes De Pavie is deeper ruby/plum-hued and has a rocking nose of red and black fruit intermixed with smoke tobacco, chocolate, graphite, and sappy herbs. It's wonderfully pure, has full-bodied richness, a real sense of limestone-like minerality, and a great finish. This brings richness and depth as well as length, elegance, and freshness. It will keep for two decades.

The 2022 Arômes de Pavie, is from a single parcel vineyard on the eastern side of the limestone plateau. It has a well-defined bouquet with black cherry, blueberry, marmalade and violet aromas. It's quite opulent, but I appreciate the delineation and brightness compared to the Clos Lunelles. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, blackberry and graphite touches. It's quite structured and charming on the finish, but will need a couple of years for time to shave its edges.

This is extremely aromatic with raspberry and cherry character. Vivid. Full-bodied with really fine tannins that are polished and very long. Fills your mouth. Plenty of fruit but not overwhelming. Creamy texture at the end. Give this three or four years to come around.

The 2022 Arômes de Pavie is a very serious wine. Hints of cinnamon, orange peel, cedar, new leather and spice confer an exotic quality that is impossible to miss. Aromatic and deep, yet also wonderfully light on its feet, Arômes de Pavie is everything a second wine should be. It offers a good look at the style of the Grand Vin but with greater immediacy. That's pretty much all I can ask for.

Perfume and red summer berry fruits, aromatic and expressive. Plush and round but sharp and bright, this has a nice instant tang and shot of acidity that gives energy and life before the liquorice and flint tannins come into play. Feels nicely complete, if young and excitable. It’s serious but vibrant too. A touch too tannic but not harsh, more ripe and fleshy, but still with detail and definition and even though it’s massy you still get the mineral, flintiness with a lovely salty aftertaste. Charming and appealingly accessible. Ageing 50% new oak, 50% one year old barrels. Acidity 3.68. 3.74pH.

The 2022 Arômes de Pavie comes from parcels on the plateau on the east side of Pavie. Matured in 50% new oak, it has a rich and opulent bouquet with blueberry, cassis, orange pith and vanillary aromas. Perhaps it needs a little more delineation. The palate is medium-bodied, with light grip on the entry, balanced with a little chewiness. Layered black fruit lace with tar and tobacco, showing just a bit of firmness on the finish.

This is a well made wine with interest, and an impressive reflection of the terroir, carefuly made, can feel the construction and gentle extractions, showing a distinctive identity of loganberry, blackberry and oyster shell salinity. The most impressive of the Pavie range if you are looking to open a bottle within the next five to eight years. Harvest 22 September to 24. It remains 100% dedicated plots, none of the new additions (Pavie Decesse and Bellevue-Mondotte) are included here. Vines 50 years average age, 50% new oak.

The 2022 Aromes de Pavie is composed of 50% Merlot and 50% Cabernet Franc with a pH of 3.74. Yields were 28 hl/ha. Deep garnet-purple in color, it prances out of the glass with showy scents of juicy black plums, black cherry compote, and kirsch, plus wafts of rose oil, chocolate mint, and tapenade. The full-bodied palate is firm and chewy, packed with black fruit preserves, finishing with a spicy kick.

The second wine of this terrific château is the 2022 Aromes De Pavie, an even split of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon (the same blend as the 2020). It might be the greatest second wine in the vintage, displaying a classic Pavie style in its ripe red and black fruits as well as notes of camphor, chocolate, violets, and graphite. Rich and powerful, with medium to full-bodied richness, it's going to be ideal for drinking on release and over the following 15-20 years.

The 2022 Arômes de Pavie is a blend of equal parts Merlot and Cabernet Franc. It is undoubtedly a serious wine that offers a striking mix of fruit depth and vibrancy, all framed by incisive tannins that need to soften. Élevage will be critical in determining where this ultimately goes. Drinking window : 2025-2037

Licorice, flowers, black, and red berries with touches of chocolate, and licorice create the nose. On the palate, it is the salty tannins, length, lift and supple, creamy textures that take the spotlight. Aromes de Pavie is no longer the second wine of Pavie. All of the fruit come from a specific 11 hectare parcel, so it should be looked at as its own brand. The wine blends 50% Merlot with 50% Cabernet Franc. Drink from 2025-2040.
