Alter Ego - Margaux 2023

Château Palmer, a style and a passion

The story of Château Palmer is told through the passion that drives its owners, one by one. First, Major General Palmer, then the Pereire brothers, and now the Mähler-Besse and Sichel families. Château Palmer is also about a style, about values and commitments. The place is living history and inspires respect for its lands and its wines.

Alter Ego, reinterpreting Château Palmer’s terroir

Since the 1998 vintage, a new approach to selection and blending has yielded this supple and rounded wine, distinguished by its freshness of fruit, crisp intensity and richness...thus giving birth to Alter Ego every year. As a result, any wine lover can satisfy sudden desire to indulge without delay.

The 2023 Vintage: "The right side of the net"

"Density, amplitude, and texture remained the watchwords of the 2023 vintage”
Thomas Duroux — director, Château Palmer

Climatic conditions:

It's hard to believe that the making of a great wine is as much a matter of chance as it is of terroir and winemaking expertise. A changeable start to the summer, which had no impact on the plant dynamics of our vineyards, sowed doubts about the quality potential of the harvest, but two successive and unprecedented heatwaves turned the vintage on its head. A vintage of elegant wines that will leave a lasting mark on the history of the estate. At the end of a generous harvest, albeit less opulent than anticipated, density, amplitude and tessitura remain the watchwords of the 2023 vintage

Tasting notes:

Born from the fine, gravelly soil so typical of its appellation, Alter Ego continues to develop the delicacy and sophisticated texture of great Margaux wines year after year. Bringing the very best out of its aromas and full body, the Indian summer of this 2023 vintage has inspired a particular burst of red and black berries, already making it irresistible. With fine tannins, a heady bouquet, and fresh fruit notes, Palmer’s Alter Ego shines brightly as it pursues its ascent

The 2023 Alter Ego is soft, open-knit and floral, with exceptional balance and tons of class. Crushed flowers, bright red-toned fruit, blood orange, mint, chalk and white pepper are all beautifully lifted in the glass. This mid-weight, gracious Alter Ego is exceptionally vivid. All the elements are so well balanced. It's a totally sensual Alter Ego that delivers on all levels. Silky, polished contours wrap around the finish.

The 2023 Alter Ego, bottled late July, takes a few swirls of the glass to cohere, but offers quite enticing scents of blueberry, violet, blood orange and vanilla. Very fine delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with sweet black cherries and blackcurrant laced with black pepper. Gentle grip with just a touch of bitterness that lends tension. This sample was decanted, which I feel benefited its showing.

A nice creamy twist of cocoa and a touch of hazelnuts to the ripe, rich dark cherries and sweet black plums. Some anise and cumin too. Juicy and structured, with medium to full body and a flavorful, succulent finish. Tight-grained. A blend of 53% cabernet sauvignon, 43% merlot and 4% petit verdot. Drink from 2027.

Encore une fois un des plus remarquables représentants de sa catégorie, arômes magnifiques de fruits rouges et noirs plus que de fleurs, texture de velours, complexité dans le soutien tannique, profondeur remarquable.

Composing one-third of the production, the 2023 Alter Ego De Palmer is based on 53% Cabernet Sauvignon, 43% Merlot and 4% Petit Verdot. It's an inky hued second wine that has a round, medium to full-bodied, ripe, downright sexy profile as well as ample red and blue fruits, some violet and graphite notes, ripe tannins, and a great finish. I'd be thrilled to drink this gorgeous 2023 any time over the coming 15-20 years. While I don't think 2023 is the best vintage for the second wines, this is brilliant.

Tobacco, cedar, savory herbs, flowers, currants, cocoa, spice, and licorice pop without asking in the nose. On the palate, the wine is even better. Medium-bodied, racy, fresh, vibrant, and also loaded with fresh, vivid, black, red, and blue fruits, spice, mint, and dark chocolate. The end note lingers with the perfect blend of refreshing acidities, and lush, silky, velvety fruits. The wine is a blend of 53% Cabernet Sauvignon, 43% Merlot, and 4% Petit Verdot. 13.9% ABV, 3.75 pH. Drink from 2028-2043. 92-94 Pts.

Vivid ruby plum colour, great depth of flavour, balancing spiced plum, fennel, rosemary and anis with juicy blackberry and damson fruit, all delivered with a caress of floral aromatics and well-paced momentum. The August and early September heat waves meant lost yield but higher concentration, and this is a structured Alter Ego that stretches out through the palate, with a kick on the finish. September 11 harvest through to October 5, 25% new oak for ageing.

The 2023 Alter Ego is plump, juicy and super-expressive. Soft, silky tannins enshroud a core of plum, red cherry, spice, menthol and mocha. All the elements are so nicely balanced. A burst of red-toned fruit and spice lingers on a finish lifted by bright acids. This is such a sensual Alter Ego.

The 2023 Alter Ego represents one-third of the crop, coming exclusively from gravel soil and picked at 32hL/ha. It displays a very deep purple hue. The bouquet is notably opulent, with the Merlot very expressive and shaping the aromatics at the moment. Hints of cassis and violets lurk beneath, perhaps needing a little more delineation. The palate is actually cut from a slightly different cloth, more restrained and a touch spicier than expected. Graphite and tobacco emerge toward the finish, as if the reins have been passed over to the Cabernet component. This will be fascinating to revisit in bottle—I would just like to see more aromatic composure.

Deep dark ruby, purple reflections, delicate edge brightening. Intense dark wild ber- ry fruit, delicate liquorice, ripe cherry, delicate nougat caramel, a fine vanilla touch underneath. Medium complexity, red berry touch, fine tannins, cherry, salty after- taste, a lively, stimulating food companion.
