Allegrini, La Poja - Veronese 2018

Allegrini was founded in Fumane in the heart of Valpolicella Classica, a land of ancient, noble traditions. While historical records trace the Allegrini Family back to the 16th century, it has been producing wine for generations and is at the forefront of the development and promotion of the Valpolicella in support of the culture and identity of its own territory.

La Poja is the name of a specific 2,5ha-plot located on the top of La Grola's vineyard. Here, the Corvina's grapes benefit from a perfect micro-climate and give birth to a beautiful eponymous wine. After 4 years of ageing, the wine is fresh and crispy and ready to reveal itself.

The 2018 vintage

Weather conditions

This year the harvest was long, with slow ripening, and abundant, high-quality grapes. Spring was particularly wet and in early July, due to the considerable number of bunches, we carried out some thinning to restore the equilibrium of the vineyard. A dry period started in July, interspersed with some timely showers. On the eve of the harvest, heavy rains (up to 170 millimetres of rainfall) made us fear the worst, but fortunately, the forecasted poor weather conditions failed to materialize. In September, therefore, we experienced a sort of new, ‘mini summer’, with temperatures reaching up to 33°C, high overall temperatures but also equally high fluctuations (even differences of 15°C between day and night), which enabled the grapes to attain ideal ripeness. Phenolic maturity was achieved in the last third of September. The grapes are in a perfectly healthy condition, with high quantities and quality.

Tasting notes

Only perfectly ripe Corvina grapes are used in this deep and sophisticated wine where fruit, spices and balsamic notes blend perfectly. On the palate, the wine reveals texture and lightness, warmth and dynamism, richness and simplicity, as only truly great wines can express.

(Veronese IGT; 100% Covina Veronese; from a single-vineyard site at 32 metres of altitude and with a south-eastern exposition). Just the second release of this wine on la place – from the somewhat cooler 2018 vintage. The somewhat longer hang-time has produced a deeply impressive wine. It is a little tight and closed at first, almost reticent to express itself aromatically. But this is very fresh and everything is in place. Indeed, this exudes cool restraint. There’s a very gentle spiciness – cinnamon and nutmeg – that is both attractive and enticing. The fruit is sensuous, pure and precise. Plums, pomegranate and loganberry, a little sour cherry – all fresh and plump. And this is very well structured – with the fruit strapped tightly to the spine. This is more crystalline and luminous than the 2010, tasted alongside. Chewy yet always fine-grained tannins build towards the finish, producing grip at first and then releasing a fine fantail. Elegant and pure with a subtle oakyness only really present in the empty glass.

Beautiful lifted scents on the nose; crushed rose petals, pink peppercorns, such incredible incense fragrance - alive, pure, concentrated and expressive - strawberries and blood orange. Crystalline and pure, upfront from the first sip - juicy and so lively but energetic too - incredibly forward and electric almost. Direct at first, then slowly expands, increasing in intensity, mass and flavour as it goes from start to finish. Leaves a lingering buzz on the tongue with softly spiced edges and a depth of red cherry and plum fruit that lasts and lasts. Utterly seductive and expansive, not especially demonstrative in terms of texture at the moment, more controlled and calm, it's all about the flavours and the intensity of the acidity that gives this such a thrill. Just hinting at its potential with brightness and verve. Tannins are integrated giving the frame and the flavour is nuanced and poised. Great freshness with balanced acidity. Feels well made with intention and such lovely drinking pleasure, a benefit of the slightly cooler vintage. A wine that makes you think, and then smile, and then drink! La Poja is Allegrini’s flagship single-vineyard Valpolicella and sits at the summit of Podere La Grola. The Corvina vines were planted in 1979 on well-drained chalk and stony soils, and its first vintage was in 1983.

The 2018 La Poja opens slowly in the glass as notes of crushed ashen stone and savory herbs give way to crushed cherries and blueberries. This is a decidedly delicate and finessed style. Brisk acidity enlivens its tart wild berry fruits as plum and dark chocolate notes evolve toward the close. The 2018 leaves a coating of fine tannins to linger, finishing with admirable length yet structured. Always a standout, La Poja is a varietal Corvina made entirely from fresh (not dried) grapes.

Attractive aromas of dark raspberry jam, dried strawberries and figs with hints of dark chocolate, flowers and orange rind. Medium-to full-bodied with very silky tannins and lovely dryness to the mid-palate. Impressive concentration and length, showing a very long, persistent finish with juicy black cherries and bitter chocolate at the end. Nothing sweetish here. Drinkable now, but better after 2023.
