Allegrini, Fieramonte - Amarone Valpolicella Riserva Docg 2015

Allegrini was founded in Fumane in the heart of Valpolicella Classica, a land of ancient, noble traditions. While historical records trace the Allegrini Family back to the 16th century, it has been producing wine for generations and is at the forefront of the development and promotion of the Valpolicella in support of the culture and identity of its own territory.

Starting in the 1960s, the Company underwent a profound transformation via Giovanni Allegrini, recognized as one of the major architects of the rebirth of the Valpolicella. The Company’s legacy then passed into the hands of his children Walter, Marilisa and Franco, who have been able to take up, develop and communicate the great insights of their father with impassioned enthusiasm, making the name of Allegrini and of the Valpolicella renowned around the world.

Fieramonte's 8ha-vineyard is located on a special part of the upper Valpolicella Classica and benefits from a ideal exposure to the east. The Corvina, Corvinone, Rondinella and Oseleta grapes planted there will then be carufully selected so that the best bunches will produce the Amarone Fieramonte Riserva.

2015 vintage
The vintage was characterized by fairly high temperatures and healthy grapes that were perfectly intact at harvest time. The ripening phase required two emergency irrigations in the upper hillside vineyards and also benefitted from the timely rainfall of 20th August, which helped maintain the physiological balance of the vines, resulting in the complete aromatic and phenolic ripening of the grapes.

Tasting notes
The lengthy ageing process in the cellar confers depth and layers to the aromas, with the dark fruit initially forward and then yielding more and more space to spicy notes, coffee and medicinal herbs. The impact on the palate is decisive and powerful, with the mouthfeel gaining grip and finesse thanks to the supple acidic impetus.

Another astounding wine from Allegrini, if you didn't buy Fiermonte last year here's a chance to buy something just as good. The most gorgeous nose; full of flowers, chocolate truffles, red fruits and dried berries - fragranced and just so inviting, also so pure. The texture and mouthfeel are just perfect - round, enveloping, the perfect weight to give structure and body with intensity and fleshiness yet nothing is over the top or too much. Delicious crunchy and fleshy fruit, wonderful minty freshness with accents of incense fragrance, wood spice and exotic spices before a lingering chalky finish with an underlying saltiness. Pure, precise, clearly defined, juicy, totally moreish. What more can you ask for? A little less friendly and overtly charming than the 2015 at the same time last year, this carries more muscle, opulence, power and boldness but it has exceptional forward motion and freshness. It delights and enthralls in equal measure from the first sip! Just wow! A blend of 45% Corvina, 45% Corvinone, 5% Rondinella and 5% Oseleta.

The 2015 Amarone della Valpolicella Classico Riserva Fieramonte is totally captivating, with a mentholated bouquet that mixes cedar spice box with cloves, dried blood orange and cinnamon-dusted black cherries. This envelopes the palate, elegant and seamlessly silky, as
a core of racy acidity perfectly balances a dense wave of ripe red fruits. It lingers impossibly long, with framing tannins that punctuate the wine nicely without slowing its momentum. The 2015 Fieramonte is gorgeous today but also packed full of potential. What’s more, there’s no shame in bringing this beautifully sculpted Amarone to the dinner table.

This is as close to perfection as I have tasted in Amarone, and given that I have followed this estate for three decades, it is a pleasure to inform you that this is the finest wine I have tasted from Allegrini.  Sensational in every respect, this is a Titan and a beautiful one at that.

An excellent vintage to mark the Place debut for this notable Amarone, from a 420m altitude in Valpolicella. Dried herbs, cloves, sweet spices and clear savoury mid-palate, grilled coffee bean, and a slightly bitter edge to the tannins as they build towards a savoury finish. Give it a few minutes, and the bitter edge disipates – in its place you get a generous, richly spiced plum and Chinese spices, just so good – a complex layering of flavours to sink into. This is not always an easy style of wine to approach, and certainly it’s a niche market, but this example is just stunning, and should be sought out by anyone looking to understand why Amarone has such a (tiny, but fervent) cult following.”

One of two Allegrini wines making their debut on the Place de Bordeaux this year. From an 8ha vineyard at 415m. Richly scented on the nose with a beautiful nuance to the dark fruits, floral scents and sweet spices, all melding together. The texture is so appealing, rich yet smooth and silky, dominating the palate with the flavours of stewed blackcurrants, coffee beans, orange rind, slightly bitter medicinal herbs, juicy balsamic peppery fruit and a beguiling saltiness. It's enveloping in the best way, but still juicy and lively, really leaves a lingering impression on the palate, an absolute lifeforce. Tannins are on the chewy and grippy side, coating the mouth and tongue but the presentation of the flavours is so precise and detailed. This is amazingly good with excellent freshness throughout. 5% Oseleta completes the blend. Ageing 48 months in French oak barriques, 6 months in Slavonian oak. First vintage was 2011 with no 2014 made.

Plush and opulent, with a creamy chocolate edge to the concentrated minty blackberries, dark walnuts, mussels and pine cones. Rich, broad and full-bodied with lots of oak now, but still very fresh and tangy. Lots of fine-grained tannins tuck up the dark fruit and the sweet spices into a lengthy finish. Needs some time for the oak to settle more. Drink from 2024.

An excellent vintage to mark the first time on the Place for this Amarone, from a 420m altitude site on la Grola hill in Valpolicella. Dried herbs, cloves, sweet spices, and clear savoury mid palate, grilled coffee bean, and a clear bitter edge to the tannins as they build through the palate, giving a savoury finish. Give it a few minutes, and the bitter edge disipates and in its place you get a generous, richly spiced plum and Chinese spices, just so good - a complex layering of flavours to sink into. This is not always an easy style of wine to approach, and certainly it's a niche market, but this is just a stunning wine, and should be sought out by anyone looking to understand why Amarone inspires such fervour. Inevitably the winemaking (long ageing) and the style of grape (dry hanging) mark the flavours, but there is site specific character here also. Ageing in barrel, then 18 months in vat and two years in bottle.

This fabulously well-placed vineyard is of eight hectares, but there is a double selection here reducing the total production even in the most generous of vintages to a little over 5000 bottles and a few magnums. This is staggeringly complex and wonderfully floral – with
violets and dried rose petals, a touch of saffron, bracken, liquorice root, clove, red Szechuan peppercorns, cinnamon, baies de timut, and assorted medicinal herbs rather than the more Balsamic notes of La Poja. Even more so than La Poja, this is incredibly refined texturally, with a sublimely velvety mouthfeel and a sumptuous, rich and taut mid-palate. The wonderfully grippy tannins seem to grab the pure, dense, compact fruit and massage it into the cheeks, releasing ripples of sapidity and freshness as they do so. Deep, rich but always fresh, lifted and intensely spicy. This builds as it unfurls at the top of the palate before releasing a descending shower of tannin-coated sapid juicy fruit. Brilliant and amazingly vibrant and energetic for a wine with this much substance (and alcohol).”
