Aiguilhe - Castillon-Côtes de Bordeaux 2023

The Von Neipperg Family, a history intertwined with winegrowing

Stephan von Neipperg is the guardian of some 800 years of winemaking tradition, and today manages with passion and talent the various Bordeaux estates acquired by his father in 1971: Château Canon La Gaffelière and La Mondotte, 1er Grands Crus Classés B de Saint-Emilion, Clos de l'Oratoire, Saint-Emilion Grand Cru Classé, Clos Marsalette, Pessac-Léognan, and Château d'Aiguilhe, Castillon - Côte de Bordeaux.

Ably assisted by a team of professionals, he has brought the wines from these châteaux to the pinnacle of quality. The upcoming generation, also deeply attached to the terroir, is preparing to perpetuate the family vocation...!

Château d'Aiguilhe, on of the most beautiful vineyards in Castillon-Côtes de Bordeaux

Purchased by Stephan von Neipperg in late 1998, Château d’Aiguilhe is one of the finest and most beautiful vineyards in the Castillon-Côtes de Bordeaux appellation. Located back from the river, the château's dignified ruins bear witness to a long and turbulent history. Today, the estate covers 140 hectares, including 90 planted with vines. The vines grow exclusively on the plateau, where they benefit from south-facing sun exposure and excellent natural drainage.

The 2023 Château d'Aiguilhe has a light nose, just a little herbaceous at first, tightly wound black fruit with a distinct marine influence. The palate is medium-bodied with powdery tannins, cohering nicely toward the finish, so that after a "wobbly start" it finishes with a bit of panache. A second bottle just tapered away a bit short.

Fresh and steely with flint, sliced lemons and hints of stone. Medium-bodied, crisp, clean and crunchy with energetic acidity. Pure sauvignon blanc. Drink now.

The 2023 Chateau D'Aiguilhe has a pure limestone nose of ripe red fruits, cassis, crushed stone, and graphite, with a beautiful floral quality in the background. It's medium-bodied, has beautiful minerality, and classy oak in the background.

Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2023 d'Aiguilhe features bright and breezy scents of redcurrant jelly, black raspberries, and wet slate leading to hints of charcoal and lavender oil. The medium-bodied palate has a firm backbone of fine-grained tannins and great tension supporting the vibrant red and black berry flavors, finishing on a chalky note. The blend is 75% Merlot and 25% Cabernet Franc.

It is the refreshing mouthfeel, along with its chalky character that sets this apart from other wines from the Cotes. Long, ripe, and intense, with vibrancy, the salty, chalky accents to the red pit fruits stand out in the nose, palate, and in the finsh. The wine is made from 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc. 14% ABV. Drink from 2027-2039. 92-94 Pts.

The 2023 d’Aiguilhe is packed with blue/purplish fruit, lavender, spice, menthol and licorice. Bright saline notes lend freshness and verve. The vibrancy of the flavors is really quite striking.

The 2023 Château d'Aiguilhe was picked between September 6 and 27, a comparatively long harvest. It yielded 30hL/ha and underwent a 32 day cuvaison, followed by aging in 20% new oak. There is a sense of airiness on the nose deriving from the limestone/clay soil—just a little diffuse. Maybe barrel-aging with bind the aromatics together. The palate is medium-bodied with fine structure. It's quite foursquare, demonstrating more complexity than the preceding Clos Marsalette, with fine delineation and mineralité on the finish. Excellent.

Dark ruby, purple reflections. Fresh cherries, a hint of cranberries, fine herbal savou- riness, hints of mandarin zest. Medium body, firm, nuances of strawberry confit, freshly structured, mineral and salty, a balanced wine for the table, already accessi- ble.

The 2023 d'Aiguilhe, a blend of 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc, reveals aromas of dark wild berries, cassis and mulberries intertwined with a gently oaky touch. More structuring than Clos Marsalette, the Pessac-Léognan owned by the Von Neipperg family, it’s medium-bodied, concentrated and rich with structuring tannins and an oaky, firm finish.
