Aiguilhe - Castillon-Côtes de Bordeaux 2018

The Von Neipperg Family, a history intertwined with winegrowing

The custodian of some 800 years of winegrowing tradition, the talented Stephan von Neipperg manages the Bordeaux estates acquired by his fatherin 1971: Château Canon La Gaffelière et La Mondotte, 1er Grands Crus Classés B de Saint-Emilion, Clos de l'Oratoire, Saint-Emilion Grand Cru Classé, Clos Marsalette, Pessac-Léognan, et le Château d'Aiguilhe, Castillon - Côte de Bordeaux

Ably assisted by a team of professionals, he has brought the wines from these châteaux to the pinnacle of quality. The upcoming generation, also deeply attached to the terroir, is preparing to perpetuate the family vocation...!

Château d'Aiguilhe, on of the most beautiful vineyards in Castillon-Côtes de Bordeaux

Purchased by Stephan von Neipperg in late 1998, Château d’Aiguilhe is one of the finest and most beautiful vineyards in the Castillon-Côtes de Bordeaux appellation. Located back from the river, the château's dignified ruins bear witness to a long and turbulent history. Today, the estate covers 140 hectares, including 90 planted with vines. The vines grow exclusively on the plateau, where they benefit from south-facing sun exposure and excellent natural drainage.

The 2018 d'Aiguilhe offers up a compelling mélange of inky red/purplish fruit and plenty of structure to match. It is impressive in its peer group, but also needs quite a bit of time to be at its best. The 2018 is not quite as showy as it was en primeur, and yet its energy and depth are intriguing.

Medium to deep garnet-purple in color, the 2018 d'Aiguilhe jumps up out of the glass with exuberant notes of plum preserves, Black Forest cake and blackberry pie, plus hints of potpourri, hoisin and forest floor. The medium to full-bodied palate has a soft texture and oodles of freshness supporting the mouth-coating black fruit preserves, finishing with loads of exotic spice layers.

Readers looking for a beautiful Bordeaux that's not going to break the bank should check out the 2018 Château D'Auguilhe. Coming from the cooler Castillon region to the east of Saint-Emilion, this beauty offers a terrific perfume of ripe black raspberries, cherries, roasted herbs, sweet mulch, and spring flowers. It has a fresh, crunchy quality to its fruit, nicely integrated acidity, ripe yet present tannins, and the class to keep for 10-15 years.

Flowers, wild cherries, licorice, crushed stone and truffle aromatics create the nose. On the palate, the wine is supple, sensuous, fresh and loaded with licorice coated, red plums and juicy cherries with dark chocolate overtones in the finish.

The purity of fruit to this is really attractive with blue fruit, blackberries and flowers on the nose and palate. Medium-bodied with fine tannins, a solid core of fruit and a long, attractive finish. Drink in 2022 and onwards.

The 2018 d'Aiguilhe is fabulous. Rich and ample to the core, the 2018 bursts from the glass with striking intensity. Super-ripe red and purplish berry fruit, lavender and rose petals are some of the many nuances that flesh out in the glass. This sumptuous, flamboyant Côtes de Castillon is a real stunner. The blend is 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc.

Fruité assez mûr, expressif, abricoté, sur les fruits rouges confits. Entrée en bouche corsée, vin droit et présentant un grain ''calcaire'' traçant. Un vrai cru de terroir, une référence.

A sleeper in the vintage, the 2018 Château d'Aiguilhe comes from the talented team of Canon-La-Gaffelière. A blend of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc from the limestone soils of the Castillon region, still aging in 20% new oak, it has impressive cassis and black raspberry fruits intermixed with notions of crushed rocks, spice, and spring flowers. Pure, medium to full-bodied, with both sweet fruit and integrated acidity, it’s going to drink nicely right out of the gate yet keep for 10-15 years or more. It’s going to be a smoking value!

Deeply colored, the wine is loaded with licorice, flowers, truffle, blackberry and plum on the nose. On the palate, the wine is rich, supple, round and fleshy, with freshness and density on the palate. There is purity in the fruit and length in the finish which provides you with sensuous red pit fruits, silky tannins, licorice, cherries, cocoa and crushed rock sensations. The harvest took place September 18 to October 5.

There’s real clarity of fruit in this young wine with blackcurrant and blackberry flavors, medium body, polished tannins and a persistent finish.

Offers very juicy and fun raspberry and blackberry fruit, with lively anise and spice accents. Should be delicious.
