The 2016 Trotte Vieille is blessed with a finely tuned bouquet of brambly red berry fruit, orange pith and light rose petal scents that unfurl with aeration. The medium-bodied palate delivers supple tannins and a fine bead of acidity. Fresh and pliant, with a gorgeous, silky finish that feels very persistent. This is an utterly charming and noble Saint-Émilion. Tasted blind at the annual Southwold tasting.

Pourpre violacé. Trotte Vieille 2016 se distingue par un bouquet très authentique, qui lui est propre et qui définit si bien son caractère, année après année. Notes florales et fruitées avec des effluves de violettes, de myrtilles et l'eucalyptus. Quelle attaque en bouche ! La fraîcheur marque l'ensemble du palais, tout en s'accommodant des autres composants. Ainsi, le palais est parfaitement équilibré et allie idéalement la puissance et la race qui lui sont octroyées par des tannins compacts et une structure vive. Cette dernière souligne l'expression fruitée, jusqu'en fin de bouche et rappelle avec brio qu’une dominance de Cabernet Franc à St-Emilion a sa raison d'être selon les terroirs (même si on le sait, il est toujours bien de le rappeler). From a great terroir on the upper plateau (not far from Troplong Mondot) and very old vines, the 2016 Château Trotte Vieille is a classic Saint-Emilion that has juicy dark fruits, leafy herbs, forest floor, and underbrush aromas and flavors. Medium-bodied, pretty, elegant, and finesse-driven, it has fine tannins and a balanced style that’s going to evolve nicely for 15+ years or more.

This has a well-built core of loganberry, plum and black cherry preserve flavors infused with savory and tobacco nuances. The finish is lightly dusty but refined, with a subtle iron twinge filtering in. Not quite as much range or drive as the top examples, but pretty. Best from 2022 through 2037. 2,000 cases made.  –JM

Complex aromas of blackberries, dried flowers and other dark fruit. Shows hints of cedar and blackberries. Full-bodied, dense and wonderfully integrated with rich tannins that just melt into the wine. Extremely fine and focused finish. Shows harmony and balance. Better after 2024.

The 2016 Trotte Vieille has a fresh bouquet, lively and generous with tensile black fruit laced with cedar and graphite, the Cabernet Franc quite expressive. The medium-bodied palate is focused and full of energy, offering supple tannin and coalescing nicely toward the sweet, almost sorbet-fresh finish. Superb.

The 2016 Trottevieille is a blend of 45% Merlot, 2% Cabernet Sauvignon and 53% Cabernet Franc picked on 6 October for the Merlot and 18 October for the Cabernets, one of the latest in recent years. The yield was 37 hectoliters per hectare, and it is matured entirely in new oak. The bouquet is quite intense, although personally I would have employed less new oak. However, it does open up nicely in the glass and imparts nuances such as orange blossom and incense aromas with time. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, well judged acidity, and here I feel the oak is simpatico with the fruit. It has a lovely grainy texture, great depth and maintains precision all the way through to the finish. This is a strong follow-up to the 2015 Trottevieille although it will require several years in bottle to subsume the oak.

A striking start to this wine as the ripe black fruits bristle then soften against the tannic structure, held carefully through the mid-palate and then lifted up on the finish to reveal their juiciness. Aromatic freshness combines with flavours of bitter dark chocolate, tight black cherries, slate and mineral notes. The 100% new oak is barely discernible except for a very light edge of charred cedar. I like this very much. 53% Cabernet Franc, 45% Merlot and 2% Cabernet Sauvignon, . Drinking Window 2027 - 2050

Barrel Sample. This estate is now in its stride, losing the austerity of the past and going for a more generous interpretation of its vineyard sites. The wine is both fruity and structured, dense in flavor, but with surprising elegance. It will age well, and should be ready to drink after 2032.
