The 2005 du Tertre is a bold, savory wine, as it so often is. Game, scorched earth, licorice, tobacco and dried herbs give this dark, virile Margaux much of its distinctive personality. The 2005 has aged well. I would prefer to drink it over the next handful of years, before the fruit fully fades, even though there is enough density to allow for aging beyond that. Structurally, du Tertre is a bit lighter than most Margaux in 2005.

This sister property to Château Giscours is firing on all cylinders with this wine. Rich, full of black-currant fruit and dark tannins, it is dense while also supple. It has excellent aging potential and should not be drunk before 2024.

This attractive deep ruby/plum/purple wine is supple, with notes of loamy soil, earth, underbrush and black and red currants. Very fragrant and medium-bodied, with relatively sweet tannin, this wine should continue to drink well for another 10-15+ years.

Mid ruby. Relatively light with some stony character on the nose. Racy and lively but a little bit of ersatz sweetness. Not exactly a classic wine. Tannins in evidence on the finish. Just a bit gawky and simple. 13% Drink 2017-2027

Wonderful balance of fruit with currant and chocolate character. Full body with integrated tannins and a clean finish. Polished and refined. Drink or hold.

Tasted single blind at Southwold. This du Tertre ’05 did not show so well in this intensive blind tasting but returning before we poured the glasses away, it had certainly improved. It has a very ripe nose, baked black cherries, cassis very pure. Nice definition – very polished. The palate is sweet and just a little confected, with supple rounded fruit and notes of blackberry, iodine, a touch of sous-bois. Very linear towards the finish – this needs time. Drink 2014-2020+ Tasted January 2009. 90+

Even in the highly acclaimed 2005 vintage, Du Tertre remains under most consumer’s radar. Made by essentially the same winemaking team as Giscours, this cuvee exhibits a dense purple color, followed by earthy, truffle, smoky blackberry, floral, and cassis aromas. It is a beautifully pure, medium to full-bodied wine with abundant but sweet tannin, fine opulence, a multilayered texture, and a long finish that is neither aggressive nor astringent. Cellar it for another 3-4 years, and consume it over the following 20-25.
