Talbot, Caillou Blanc - Bordeaux 2022

Château Talbot, un domaine exceptionnel

4eme Grand Cru Classé de Saint-Julien (Médoc), le Château Talbot s’étend sur 110 hectares d’un seul tenant de vignes au sein de la commune de Saint-Julien appellation remarquable puisqu’elle ne comporte pas moins de 11 grands crus classés.
Situé de façon idéale en bordure de l’estuaire de la Gironde sur des croupes de graves alluvionnaires charriées du Massif Central par la Dordogne et des Pyrénées par la Garonne, le terroir du Château Talbot est exceptionnel.

Georges Cordier, le grand-père des actuels propriétaires fût l’un des premiers à replanter des vignes blanches en Médoc dans les années 30.

Issu en majorité de cépage Sauvignon, avec une pointe de Sémillon, Caillou blanc est élevé en barriques sur ses lies avec bâtonnage à la Bourguignonne. Le vin est très aromatique, avec une personnalité vive et nerveuse que l’on retrouve au fil des millésimes.

The 2022 vintage of Caillou Blanc is remarkably oily in texture, yet it is surprisingly light and refreshing on the palate, which is truly extraordinary. The alluring fragrances of apricot, peach, and star fruit are apparent at first sniff, and the concentrated saltiness cleverly extends the aftertaste, as if in a graceful dance with the aroma of acacia honey and bergamot. Just when you thought the performance was coming to a close, it delivers an unexpected finale of delicious jackfruit. The wine’s exceptional balance in such a sweltering vintage is truly commendable. For those who enjoy oily textured white wines, this one is a must-try.

The 2022 Caillou Blanc offers an attractive bouquet of peach skin and nectarine, with the Sémillon perhaps more expressive than before. The palate is well balanced: it's not overly complex, but I appreciate the waxy texture and dash of ginger, which now seems more pronounced on the finish. Fine.

Soft gold in colour, with fleshy peach and nectarine notes on the opening. Keeps the aromatics a little subdued, but this does a good job of marking the opulence of the vintage in its texture without sacrificing lift. A white wine with impact and character, and it's impressive.

The 2022 Caillou Blanc is a delight. Hints of apricot, peach, candied lime peel, ginger, exotic flowers and a touch of new oak all grace this supremely classy, polished white from Talbot. The 2022 will provide highly pleasurable drinking for at least a handful of years.

Richly textured and nicely full of citrus and white stone fruit, crisp and juicy, a little bit subdued by the mid palate, the frame and the toasted elements just taking over and constricting some of the lovely fruitiness at the moment, becoming a bit serious. Well constructed, though it's missing some energy. Harvest 9-28 September. Yield of 40hl/ha. 3.34pH. Ageing in French oak, 64% new. Tasted twice.

The 2022 Caillou Blanc Talbot was picked 31 August to 5 September, aged in 40% new oak. Lively on the nose, it offers lemon verbena, lemon thyme and white peach scents on the nose. The palate is well balanced with an attractive waxy texture, more pithy than recent vintages with a spicy, stem ginger tinged finish. Thoroughly enjoyable.

Sunflower yellow in colour; this is intense, with rich apricot puree and sweet toasted vanilla bean notes. Kick of lime juice on the finish gives balance, certainly delivers a gourmet white (the sample by the way was 48 hours old, which for whites in 2022 is perhaps a little too much - but that in itself tells a story). 3.34ph, 40% new oak.

Yellow citrus, white peach, orange rind and honeysuckle scents open the nose. On the palate, the wine is creamy, sweet, exuberant and fruity, with just a hint of chalk in the backend of the finish. The wine blends 71% Sauvignon Blanc and 29% Semillon.14% ABV. Drink from 2024-2028.
