Sena - Chili 2012

The 2011/2012 season had a heat summation that was higher than in the previous year and above the historic average. The season’s total heat summation was 1,517 DD, 137 DD more than last season and 93 more than the historic average, which resulted in phenological stages coming 15 to 25 days early, depending on the block. Precipitation, meanwhile, amounted to just 4.8 mm (0.2 inches), signicantly different from the 36 mm (1.4 inches) recorded in the 2010/2011 season. The lack of rain favoured grape health and the ripening of late varieties such as Carmenère, with the result that the wines of this vintage have outstandingly deep, vivid colours and aromatic expression, and tannins that are more friendly and well rounded than in previous seasons. With moderate acidity and alcohol, these wines are complex and rened, with intense fruit and spice proles.

The grapes were handpicked in the morning and transported to the winery in 12-kg boxes for a careful inspection on a double sorting table to eliminate plant matter and defective berries. The grapes were fermented in stainless steel tanks at 24°–28°C (75°–82°F), depending on the variety and the level of extraction desired. Three pumpovers were carried out daily during fermentation to rotate 0.5-1.5 times the volume of the tank. Total maceration time ranged from 9 to 40 days for the Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Malbec, and Carmenere, and 6 to 8 days for the Petit Verdot, according to the development of each block vinied. The nal blend was racked to French oak barrels (70% new) and aged for 22 months, during which time malolactic fermentation and stabilization occurred naturally.

A rich, round and lush-tasting red, featuring concentrated flavors of dark currant, plum tart and dark berry, with plenty of toasty notes. Suave tannins caress the creamy finish. Drink now through 2022.

The 2012 Sena is from a cool vineyard on a rocky hillside with some clay, in the middle of the Aconcagua Valley, where there is still some influence from the Pacific Ocean. This wine has always been a blend, and in 2012 it is half Cabernet Sauvignon, complemented by Carmenere, Merlot, Malbec and Cabernet Franc. Bright and focused, with a nose mixing red fruit, it is also bright-colored, with ripe black fruit and balsamic notes in the shape of tobacco and cedar wood, with a medium-bodied palate, very good freshness and acidity, sophisticated, polished and fine-grained tannins. This is still a baby, but the silky texture makes it accessible now, while the complexity should come with more time. Drink 2015-2022.

Sena’s hillside vineyard is on the cooler side of the Aconcagua valley (the limit to ripen Cabernet and Carmenere), extending over 45 hectares planted with Cabernet Sauvignon, Carmenere, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, Malbec and Syrah. The colluvial soils on the valley’s slopes contain a variety of textures and stone proportions, resulting in a great diversity of well-drained gravel, rock and loam. The backbone of the wine is Cabernet Carmenere, complemented with the other grapes. In the 1990s, Eduardo Chadwick visited Napa, where he met Robert Mondavi. Mondavi visited Chile in 1993 and Eduardo was the one to drive him around. Mondavi was delighted with the potential he saw, but there was really no quality wine to show the world the potential of Chile. It was a 50/50 joint venture to make a blend including Carmenere to give it a Chilean character. In 2005, Eduardo Chadwick bought Mondavi’s 50 percent, and since then it’s been a Chadwick family winery, worked biodinamically since 2005.

A phenomenal red with aromas of blackberries, licorice, sandalwood and hot stones that turns to cigar box and hints of sweet tea. Full body, incredible depth and concentration, yet there's also agility and playfulness to this. Long, fascinating and balanced. It talks to you. The greatest Seña ever. (Winemaker and owner agree.) There's wonderful purity and beauty. Made from biodynamically grown grapes. Better in 2017
