Rouget - Pomerol 2022

Having clay soil in Pomerol really makes a difference. It cleverly wraps up rich tannins, tight muscles, and mature fruit aromas in a sweet sensation. The ripe berries are enticing, especially the fragrant blueberries, blackberries, and creamy plums that unfold layer by layer after swirling the glass. Although this wine lacks a bit of floral fragrance, it still convinces me with its ideal concentration. I believe that with aging, it will show more potential.

The 2022 Rouget bursts with aromas of jammy berries, licorice, vanilla pod and espresso roast, followed by a medium to full-bodied, rich and extracted palate that's more drying and austere than it appeared during élevage.

Muscular, reserved on the aromatics for the first few moments in the glass, with focus on dark cherry fruits, edges of kirsch well balanced by bitter rosemary, mint leaf, graphite and soft cloves. This is attractive, a well constructed wine, give it a few years in bottle. Edouard Labruyère owner, 30% new oak. 20 ha of gravel and clay soils.

A blend of 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc, the 2022 Château Rouget presents smoky dark fruit, loamy earth, and hints of iron and meat on the nose. This carries to a medium to full-bodied, round, and mouth-filling Pomerol that has ripe tannins and a structured feel. Aged for 16 months in 30% new oak barrels, this should drink well for 10-12 years. Total production: 2,500 cases.

2026-2040 94/100

The 2022 Rouget is very attractive and quite floral on the nose, with crushed violets infusing black cherry and boysenberry fruit. The medium-bodied palate is lightly spiced with sapid black fruit giving way to mocha hints toward the finish. This is one of the most elegant vintages from Rouget and it should age with style, though one bottle was a bit more chocolatey on the finish than the other.

A polished and complex Rouget with a fine balsamic touch. Dark plums, baking spices, white pepper and dried herbs. Round and powdery in texture, with ripe dark fruit and lush, melted tannins. Very long and appetizing. It’s marked by great length and ultra-ripe tannins. Approachable already, but this will gain complexity in the next two to four years.

The 2022 Rouget is a delicate, elegant wine. Crushed flowers, mocha and dark spice meld into black cherry, blackberry, chocolate and lavender. Rouget offers an appealing combination of intense, dark flavors layered into a mid-weight frame. There's plenty of depth, but it's expressed in an understated manner. I would cellar the 2022 for a few years, as the tannins could use a bit more time to integrate fully. Harvest began on September 6, the earliest ever here. Yields were 24 hectoliters per hectare, the result of spring frost and then dehydration during the summer. Tasted two times.

Intense aromatics on the nose, concentrated and lively fruit. Plush and tannic, though not so fleshy, more lean with tannins that have a cool crushed stone and liquorice spiced grip giving some seriousness to the palate, but also a sense of construction and structure. Feels like they picked just at the right time, slightly ripe but refined and defined still with the intensity and depth you want from Pomerol. Still compact but there's something very charming about this, if quite intense. Alc?

The 2022 Rouget has a high-toned nose with crushed violets and iris flower, ebullient blue fruit blossoming in the glass. Maybe just a tinge of sur-maturité. The palate is medium-bodied with thickly-textured tannins that lacquer the mouth. Bold and almost brash, it needs more finesse and precision to manifest on the finish by the time of bottling.

Deep crimson. Intense pure dark plum, red cherry, chinotto aromas with herb garden notes. Fresh and mineraly palate with attactive dark plum, mulberry, red cherry fruits, fine slinky touch sappy tannins, lovely mid palate viscosity/ richness and well integrated crisp acidity. A touch of whole bunch gives intrigue. (Merlot Cabernet Franc 25% new oak) 13.9% alc

Inky plum in colour, this has a lovely balance, thoroughly enjoyable in its depth and plushness of blackberry and damson fruit character, clear bitter chocolate, mint leaf, eucpalyptus, slate and liqourice. It's big and expands through the palate, and you feel the tannins step by step building to full impact by the close of play - but that is the way to do it, where it starts small and then builds. It's concentrated, in the spirit of the vintage, and has plenty of Pomerol signature in its velvety tannins and bitter black chocolate finish, and even the flash of heat on the finish is taken in its stride. Great construction, waves of oyster shell and saffron, and this is an exceptional Rouget from owner Edouard Labruyère. 30% new oak.

The 2022 Rouget has a deep garnet-purple color. It flies out with notes of baked black and red plums, juicy blueberries, and tar, plus wafts of sandalwood and tobacco leaf. The full-bodied palate is laden with dried black fruits and earthy accents, framed by chewy tannins, with a savory finish.

The 2022 Château Rouget offers a big, exuberant nose of ripe red and black fruits, chocolaty oak, and violets. This carries to a medium to full-bodied Pomerol with a powerful, foursquare texture, ripe tannins, and outstanding length. This barrel sample gained elegance and purity with air, and my money is on it being an outstanding, pleasure-bent Pomerol.

The 2022 Rouget is compelling right out of the gate. Succulent dark red cherry fruit, spice, cloves, menthol and licorice all race across the palate. Medium in body and wonderfully energetic Rouget is a winner. I especially like how it marries fruit richness and vibrancy, one of the signatures of the best wines in this vintage. Medium-bodied, with notes of espresso, plums, and cocoa before you find the luscious layers of black and red pit fruits, silky tannins, and chalky finish with its white peppery edge on the back end. Drink from 2025-2042.

A lavish, ripe style of Pomerol, the 2022 Rouget bursts with aromas of cherry preserve, sweet berries and toasty new oak, followed by a medium to full-bodied, fleshy and supple palate that's rich and demonstrative. Readers who gravitate toward overtly jammy wines will appreciate it more than I did, but it is well made in its style.

Very pretty and solid texture with medium velvety tannins, dark and juicy fruit and a flavorful finish. Nice structure as well as balance.
