The 2018 Rauzan Gassies has improved on the nose since I tasted it from barrel, losing some of its earthiness/greenness, light floral scents percolating through the black fruit. So far, so good. The palate is medium-bodied with hard tannins on the entry, and here there is a bit of herbaceousness. The finish feels bitter and stiff compared to its peers. I take no joy in writing that this is disappointing after the promising aromatics.

Kräftiges Rubingranat, violette Reflexe, dezente Randaufhellung. Tabakig, rotes Waldbeerkonfit, blumige Nuancen, frische Kirschen und Orangenzesten. Saftig, rote Kirschen auch am Gaumen, feine, zart wirkende Tannine, dezente Süße im Abgang, ausgewogen, frisch strukturiert, ein schlanker, seidiger Magaux, der bereits früh zugänglich sein wird. Rouge grenat aux reflets pourpres. Bouquet fruité, de bonne intensité, aux notes de baies noires et d'épices. Caractère élancé et juteux en bouche. Un vin agréable, équilibré, prêt à être apprécié.

A red with plenty of blackberry, blackcurrant and tile aromas and flavors. It’s full-bodied, yet tight and compressed on the palate with firm, chewy tannins that are fine and very long. Needs three or four years to open, but will improve nicely going forward. Try after 2024.

The 2018 Rauzan Gassies has a reserved, earthy, mulch-y bouquet that is very atypical for the vintage, though it seems well defined and fresh. The palate is medium-bodied and chewy, with dry tannins and some attenuation toward the finish. I wish I could find a Rauzan Gassies that delivers in the same way that vintages from the 1950s did, and maybe my expectations were raised by a growing season that might have countered the lightness of this Margaux. It just does not deliver.

Medium to deep garnet-purple colored, the 2018 Rauzan-Gassies rocks up with flamboyant notions of kirsch, blackberry preserves, warm cassis and Chinese five spice with touches of black tea, red roses and menthol plus a waft of molten chocolate. Medium to full-bodied with a firm frame of ripe, fine-grained tannins and fantastic freshness, it has a solid core of rich fruit, finishing long with perfumed red and black fruit layers.

This is another Margaux estate that has improved impressively. The rich tannins of the fruity wine are dry but have a lift and a life that is already attractive. Its fine, ripe future is assured.
