Quintus - Saint-Emilion Grand Cru 2017

Composed of 54.4% Merlot and 45.6% Cabernet Franc, the 2017 Quintus is deep garnet-purple in color and charges out of the gate with exuberant scents of blueberry compote, plum preserves and fresh mulberries with touches of sandalwood, powdered cinnamon, potpourri and forest floor plus a waft of black tea. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is jam-packed with expressive black and blue fruit layers, framed by wonderfully velvety tannins, finishing long and layered. Drinking Window : 2022 - 2044. 93+

The 2017 Quintus is super impressive today. Sweet floral and spice nuances give the 2017 its striking aromatic upper register. Rich and dense on the palate, Quintus is a bold, hedonistically opulent Saint-Émilion in 2017. Soaring Franc overtones play off the Merlot nicely, adding both aromatic presence and a real feeling of saline intensity that comes through, especially on the finish. Today, the 2017 is a touch exuberant - almost too much so. Another few years in bottle should help it settle down. The 2017 is not at all subtle, but it has a lot to offer. Here, too, élevage has done wonders for the wine.

A focused, restrained style, with cassis, damson plum and bitter cherry flavors moving in lockstep, backed by subtle floral and mineral accents on the finish. Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Drink now through 2029. — JM

Really perfumed with blackcurrants and blueberries. Flowers and cookies. Medium to full body, round and creamy tannins and a flavorful finish. Slightly austere from the tannins at the end, but a solid red for the vintage. Better to drink after 2022.

Lighter bodied and less concentrated than the vintages either side [2018 and 2016], but this is fine and racy and equally precise. There is more Cabernet Franc than usual, providing lift and expression. The tannins are finely etched and this is an elegant wine that will be accessible earlier [than some more powerful vintages]. The frosts of 2017 had no effect here but the yield was lower than normal, at 30.2hl/ha.

A significantly shifted blend due to the high quality of the Cabernet Franc, the 2017 Château Quintus is 54% Merlot and 46% Cabernet Franc (it’s normally a 70/30 Merlot Cabernet Franc split) that's all from the upper plateau and more limestone soils. Black cherries, black raspberries, crushed flowers, forest floor and damp earth characteristics all give way to a medium to full-bodied, beautiful, elegant and seamless 2017 that has the purity and elegance of the vintage.

Réduit au nez, mais bouche profonde, tannique, séveuse, grand St-Emilion de côte, profond, épicé, long, qui aura besoin de temps pour se faire mais les tanins sont justes et sans dureté.

The 2017 Quintus is an attractive, fragrant Saint-Émilion. In this tasting, the two wines off the estate are not as markedly different as I had hoped. It will be interesting to see how the wines develop over time. Bright red cherry fruit and lifted floral notes open up nicely, with a touch of Franc character that informs the finish.

Spicy rubicund fruits with a dash of mint, licorice and black cherry open the perfume. The wine is dignified and energetic. There is a wholesomeness of fruit, a sweet cherry spirit and an emphasis on the finesse styled character.

The 2017 Quintus was picked 14 to 29 September. It has a pretty, rather compact bouquet that clearly lacks the complexity of the 2015 or 2016 like so many Saint-Émilions. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin. There is a tight ball of slightly ferrous dark berry fruit mixed with brown spice, although the finish feels easy-going and does not deliver the complexity of a top-drawer vintage. As such, I feel this will be suitable for early drinking rather than a vinde garde.

A blend of 54.4% Merlot and 45.6% Cabernet Franc, the deep garnet-purple colored 2017 Quintus has a slightly closed nose with aromas of crushed blueberries, fresh black and red currants and black raspberries with touches of black pepper, cinnamon stick, anise and tilled soil plus a waft of lavender. The palate is medium to full-bodied with great intensity and energy, displaying vibrant red and black fruits with wonderful acidity and ripe, rounded tannins, finishing long and lively.

This is rather attractively marked by Cabernet Franc, the highest levels since 2011, showing floral aromatics that play along the palate. Insisting, grippy tannins make their presence felt without being drying, and there's a lovely minerally, slatey, salty tang on the finish which emphasises the purity of the red fruits. This is a very good Quintus, elegant and with less concentration than in recent years, but highly enjoyable. Harvested 14-29 September.

Very fine and polished with blackberry and blueberry character. Medium to full body, integrated tannins and a focused finish. Almost Burgundian.
