Quintessa, un “Cru” au cœur de la Napa Valley

Caché au cœur de Rutherford, Quintessa est un domaine de 280 acres (113 hectares) qui reflète une grande diversité de géologie, biodiversité, expositions et microclimats. Inspirés par ce lieu unique, les fondateurs Agustin et Valeria Huneeus ont cru dès le départ qu’il était destiné à devenir l’un des grands domaines viticoles du monde.

Aujourd’hui, 160 acres (65 hectares) sont plantés en Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot et Carménère, répartis sur 26 parcelles. Chaque bloc est cultivé — en agriculture biologique et biodynamique —, récolté et vinifié individuellement afin de préserver et d’exalter les subtilités de ce terroir. Inspirée par la grandeur naturelle du lieu, la famille Huneeus s’est engagée à capturer la beauté et l’harmonie de ce paysage dans un grand vin.

Millésime 2022

La saison 2022 a démarré avec vigueur, grâce aux pluies tardives de l’automne 2021. Grâce à ces réserves nutritives, la vigne a pu traverser cette année marquée par la sécheresse. Les conditions hivernales sèches ont entraîné un débourrement précoce, suivi d’un printemps frais. Des températures modérées durant une grande partie de l’été ont permis une véraison calée sur un calendrier de maturation plus classique. La chaleur de fin de saison a accéléré la maturation et les petites grappes ont avancé les vendanges. Les raisins ont une excellente maturité phénolique, un très bon niveau d’acidité et un élégant équilibre.

Notes de dégustation :

Quintessa 2022 est un vin séduisant, s’ouvrant sur des arômes intenses de cerise noire et de cassis, complétés par des notes de tabac, laurier, cèdre et chocolat noir. Souple et généreux dès l’attaque, ses arômes se prolongent harmonieusement en bouche. Le palais révèle des fruits noirs avec une touche de pierre concassée, goudron et graphite. En finale, ce millésime dévoile la signature des tanins fins du terroir de Quintessa, soutenue par une texture ample et un fruit profond.

Deep purple-hued, the 2022 Proprietary Red offers cassis, blue fruits, candied violets, and sweet spice-driven aromatics. It's medium to full-bodied, lush, soft, and sexy on the palate, with velvety tannins and a great finish. This upfront, supple beauty is ready to go and will drink well over the coming 10-12 years or so. Drink 2025-2036.

At first I find this a little fresher than Inglebook Rubicon, but there is also more of a slight sense of discordance between the (fresher) aromatics and the (punchier, fuller, richer) palate. A touch of florality reinforces the initial impression of levity and freshness. In the mouth, this is ample and full. It’s denser too at the core than Rubicon. Candlewax. Black berry fruits. Brambles. There’s quite a pronounced natural sweetness to the fruit too, underscored by the toast of the oak and that makes this feel just a little confected – but in a reassuring and redolently Napa way. Long on the finish. 96.

Black cherry and plum jam notes are frankly forward in feel, while baker's chocolate and licorice snap emerge steadily on the back end. Manages a flash of violet, a rarity in this vintage. Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Carmenère, Petit Verdot and Merlot. Drink now through 2029. 9,000 cases made.

Such an incredible wine here - one of the stars of the September releases. Smells amazing, cooling blueberries with fragrant blackcurrants, edges of florality - totally inviting scents. Full and filling in the mouth, this is ample with such a layered effect, super vertical and elongated. Tight and a little tense but it really works - such balance between black fruit, dried herbs, high acidity and a profound structure. Refined and beautifully presented. So much life, so much energy - this is pure class. A wine you don't want to put down. Feels hands off despite such concentration and power. Ends salty with sticky liquorice, mint and cooling wet stones. You could definitely drink this now but it will age too! 1% Merlot and 1% Petit Verdot complete the blend. One of the final few vintages with Rodrigo Soto at the helm - he stepped down last year to concentrate on his family project Far Mountain in Sonoma Valley which is worth following. One of the stars of Rutherford, you'll find nuance, depth and a ton of character in this 2022 vintage, begging to be shared. The black fruits are studded with sage and rosemary herbs, with pumice-stone texture and a mouthwatering finish. A delicious wine, with lift and grip. Rebekah Wineburg winemaker, Augustin and Valeria Huneeus owners at this stunning 69ha property.

A blend of 93% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Cabernet Franc and 1% each Carmenère, Merlot and Petit Verdot, Quintessa's 2022 Red Wine initially offers up mossy, savory and earthy notes, but those are backed by layers of mixed red and black cherries, plus some plummier bass notes. Aged 22 months in 60% New French oak, there are hints of cedar and vanilla as well. In the mouth, the wine is medium- to full-bodied, fairly broad on the palate, showing some effects of the vintage's early September heat wave, stretching the wine's structural tannins into a coarser weave than typical, without upsetting the overall sense of harmony on the lingering finish.

So sweet and purely fruity on the nose, then layered, sophisticated, detailed and complex on the palate. Full-bodied and fully tannic, yet the fine-sand tannins are beautifully integrated, with ripe red and black cherries, raspberries, blueberries and cocoa. Elegant, intricate, charming and quite fresh. Made from 93% cabernet sauvignon, 4% cabernet franc and 1% each of carmenere, petit verdot and merlot. Drinkable now, but best from 2030.

What is immediately surprising is just how seamless this young barrel sample of Cabernet is, effusing a plush, soft, and silky fruit profile with layers of creamy dark berry fruits, nuanced by fragrant sagebrush and sweet toasty cedar wood. What an effort! One of the most satisfying wines from this challenging vintage.
